Reunited: Jets strike deal to pair WR Randall Cobb with QB for 11th season

Randall Cobb rates among new Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets, which explains the team’s motive for adding the veteran slot receiver on a reported one-year deal.

Cobb, 32, spent his first eight seasons with Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers before playing for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans. The Packers, under Rodgers’ direction at a salty stretch in their partnership, re-acquired Cobb via trade from the Texans in 2021.

In 10 seasons as teammates, Rodgers completed 534 career passes to Cobb according to Green Bay game notes, second only to the Rodgers-to-Davante Adams pairing (687).

Cobb is reportedly tailing Rodgers to New York after the Jets finalized a trade for the four-time MVP quarterback last week. The Jets already signed former Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard to a four-year, $44 million deal in free agency. Cobb turns 33 in August, and Rodgers will be 40 in December.

Like Rodgers and Lazard, Cobb will recognize a few familiar faces in New York, including offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, No. 3 quarterback Tim Boyle and right tackle Billy Turner.

Cobb played in 13 games last season with 34 receptions for 417 yards and one touchdown.

Following the season-ending loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 18 on Jan. 8, Cobb exited the playing field and went into the tunnel at Lambeau Field at Rodgers’ immediate right, a blaring signal it was the final appearance for the pair as Packers.

“I just love the man. Always had a tight friendship with him. Just a lot of gratitude in the midst of disappointment,” Rodgers said after that game. “The best part of this game is the relationships that come out of it because that lasts longer than the career, and I’m thankful for Randall.”

Cobb and Rodgers also shared a tearful embrace on the sideline in what they thought could be their last time taking the field together on Dec. 30, 2018.

“We’ve spent a lot of years on this team in Green Bay here,” Cobb said in January. “We’ll see where life takes us.”

Cobb has 625 receptions for 7,585 yards and 53 touchdowns in 155 games with the Packers, Cowboys and Texans.

Friends of Aaron? Jets target WRs Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb

The New York Jets reportedly want to make Aaron Rodgers feel at home and are eyeing two of his favorite targets in free agency.

With the Green Bay quarterback widely expected to join the Jets in a trade, multiple outlets said Tuesday that New York is close to a deal with Allen Lazard and ESPN said fellow Packers receiver Randall Cobb is “on their radar.”

New Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett worked with all three players when he held the same position in Green Bay from 2019-21.

Lazard, 27, caught 60 passes for 788 yards and six touchdowns in 15 starts in 2022. He has 169 receptions for 2,236 yards and 20 TDs in 57 games (40 starts) since signing with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

Cobb, 32, recorded 34 receptions for 417 yards and one score in 13 games (three starts) for Green Bay in 2022. He has 625 catches for 7,585 yards and 53 TDs in 155 games (87 starts) with Green Bay (2011-18, 2021-22), the Dallas Cowboys (2019) and Houston Texans (2020).

Pro Football Network reported Monday that the deal to send Rodgers to the Jets “is done.”

No trades for players under contract can be made official until the first day of the NFL league year on Wednesday.

Report: Packers WR Randall Cobb underwent ankle surgery

Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb recently underwent ankle surgery, NFL Network reported Friday.

The procedure was a cleaning-out and designed to “fix a persisting issue,” according to the report.

Cobb is about to come a free agent and it remains unclear if the Packers will pursue retaining him. It may hinge on whether veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers returns to Green Bay, as Rodgers lobbied for the team to sign Cobb for a second tour of duty prior to the 2021 campaign.

Cobb, 32, caught 34 passes for 417 yards and one touchdown in 13 games (three starts) last season. He injured the ankle in mid-October and was placed on injured reserve before returning to action in Week 11.

Cobb has 625 receptions for 7,585 yards with 53 touchdowns in 155 career games (87 starts) for the Packers (2011-18, 2021-2022), Dallas Cowboys (2019) and Houston Texans (2020). He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2014 when he set career bests of 91 receptions, 1,287 yards and 12 scoring receptions.

Oklahoma State LB Mason Cobb entering transfer portal

Oklahoma State leading tackler Mason Cobb announced Saturday that he will enter the transfer portal.

The junior linebacker racked up 96 stops this season, including a team-best 13 for loss while earning second-team All-Big 12 honors. He also had two sacks, one interception and one forced fumble.

“After long conversations with family members and mentors, I would like to announce that I have officially entered the transfer portal with two years of eligibility left,” Cobb said in a Twitter post. “I will always be a Cowboy at heart! It’s time for me to move onto the next chapter in my life and make the decision that’s best for me.”

Cobb, a first-year starter, reached double digits in tackles on three occasions this season. He recorded a career-high 16 stops in a 43-40 double-overtime loss to TCU on Oct. 15.

Cobb is from Provo, Utah, where BYU is located.

Packers activate WR Sammy Watkins, place Randall Cobb on IR

The Green Bay Packers activated Sammy Watkins off injured reserve and placed fellow wide receiver Randall Cobb on IR on Saturday.

Watkins (hamstring) was added to the injury report and joins offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) in being listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

Watkins, 29, was hurt in Week 2 and placed on IR on Sept. 24. He had six receptions for 111 yards in two starts.

Watkins has 354 catches for 5,170 yards and 34 touchdowns in 101 games with the Buffalo Bills (2014-16), Los Angeles Rams (2017), Kansas City Chiefs (2018-20), Baltimore Ravens (2021) and Packers.

Cobb, 32, sustained an ankle injury and was carted to the locker room during the second half of the Packers’ loss to the New York Jets last Sunday.

He has 18 catches for 257 yards in six games (one start) on the season.

Cobb has 609 receptions for 7,425 yards with 52 touchdowns in 148 career games with the Packers (2011-18, 2021-present), Dallas Cowboys (2019) and Houston Texans (2020).

Also on Saturday, the Packers placed center/guard Jake Hanson (biceps) on injured reserve and elevated linebacker La’Darius Hamilton from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

Hanson, 25, has appeared in 11 games (one start) with Green Bay.

Hamilton, 24, had three tackles in six games last season with the Packers.

Packers missing top four WRs at practice

The Green Bay Packers practiced Thursday without their top four wide receivers.

Starters Allen Lazard (ankle), Sammy Watkins (hamstring) and Randall Cobb (illness), and Christian Watson (hamstring) all did not practice (DNP) ahead of their Week 3 game against Tampa Bay.

All but Cobb practiced Wednesday but were listed as limited.

Lazard missed Week 1 after his ankle was stepped on in practice the week before. Watkins and rookie Romeo Doubs lead the wideout corps with six catches each through two games. Watkins has 111 yards to Doubs’ 64.

The Packers sport just two throwing touchdowns in two games – one each to Lazard and running back Aaron Jones.

Tight end Marcedes Lewis (groin) also missed practice.

Tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) was back at practice Thursday after a DNP on Wednesday.

The Packers re-signed WR Travis Fulgham to the practice squad Thursday, joining Juwann Winfree. The Packers have three healthy WRs currently on the 53-man roster: Doubs, Samori Toure and Amari Rodgers.

The Packers (1-1) play at Tampa Bay (2-0) on Sunday.

Report: Packers WR Randall Cobb underwent core muscle surgery

Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb underwent core muscle surgery last week and could miss the rest of the season, according to ESPN.

The Packers are hopeful Cobb can return for the postseason.

Cobb was injured against the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 28. He had four catches for a season-best 95 yards and a touchdown before exiting in the second quarter of the Packers’ 36-28 victory.

At the time, Green Bay said Cobb sustained a groin injury.

The team apparently learned later that the ailment was more serious in nature with Cobb undergoing the procedure during the team’s bye week.

“Cobby’s going to out for a while; he had a pretty significant injury,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday. “That’s unfortunate because I thought he has done such an amazing job when given the opportunity. We were talking about just his targets on third down alone.”

The 31-year old Cobb, in his 11th NFL season out of Kentucky, has 28 catches for 375 yards and five touchdowns in his return to Green Bay. Cobb played his first eight seasons with the Packers before moving on to the Dallas Cowboys (2019) and Houston Texans (2020).

Cobb has 591 receptions for 7,168 yards and 52 touchdowns in 142 career games (84 starts).

The Packers (9-3) host the Chicago Bears (4-8) on Sunday night.

Packers WR Randall Cobb (groin) exits vs. Rams

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb left Sunday’s game against the visiting Los Angeles Rams with a groin injury.

Cobb appeared to injure himself on the Packers’ opening drive after planting his right foot to make a cut on a pass route. He remained in the game, contributing a 54-yard catch and run at one point, as well as a 7-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Cobb did not return after halftime and was ruled out, finishing the game with four receptions for 95 yards and a score.

The 31-year old, in his 11th NFL season out of Kentucky, has 28 catches for 375 yards and five touchdowns in his return to Green Bay. Cobb played his first eight seasons with the Packers before moving on to the Dallas Cowboys (2019) and Houston Texans (2020).

Cobb has 591 receptions for 7,168 yards and 52 touchdowns in 142 career games.

Packers GM: Randall Cobb here only because Aaron Rodgers wanted him

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst did not mask his intentions in bringing back wide receiver Randall Cobb.

“Obviously without Aaron (Rodgers), I don’t think we would be pursuing that,” Gutekunst said Thursday. “Randall is still a really good player. Seeing him last night kind of reminded what an impact he’ll have in our locker room, for our football team. This was a very important thing for Aaron, and that’s why we did it.”

Cobb, who turns 31 next month, was acquired Wednesday from the Houston Texans for a 2022 sixth-round pick. Houston will pick up $3 million of his salary to make the deal work under the salary cap.

Rodgers said Wednesday he deserves input on personnel matters that “directly impact” his job, and Gutekunst supported that notion, saying Rodgers “earned that right.”

Rodgers described his relationship with Gutekunst as “professional” in a lengthy session with media on Wednesday. Gutekunst said Thursday it is highly important for him to repair his relationship with Rodgers. But he said it will take effort on both sides to rebuild bridges scorched by an offseason standoff that Rodgers said had him considering retirement.

Gutekunst said nothing needs to be done with Rodgers’ existing contract, which expires after the 2023 season, but there are plans to address his deal. He disagreed with the sentiment Rodgers shared Wednesday on being a “lame duck quarterback.”

“I’ve never looked at it like that,” he said. “At the moment, he has three years left on his contract, so he’s not going to be a lame duck. We may alter that, but even still it’s not going to be one year left.”

That’s not the only contract matter on the front burner for the Packers.

All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams is in the final year of his deal and made it clear he wants to be the highest-paid player at his position. That would mean more than $27 million in annual salary with Arizona’s DeAndre Hopkins pulling in $27.25 million annually. Gutekunst said the Packers don’t see the Hopkins deal, which is more than $5 million more per season than the second-highest-paid receiver, Julio Jones, makes, as the benchmark.

“It’s very important for us moving forward (with Adams and having) him as part of our football team and making it work,” Gutekunst said.

Cobb played for the Packers from 2011-18 before spending 2019 with the Dallas Cowboys and 2020 with Houston. He had his best season in Green Bay in 2014, making the Pro Bowl with career highs in catches (91), receiving yards (1,287) and touchdown grabs (12).

Texans WRs Cobb, Stills out vs. Lions

The Houston Texans will be without wide receivers Randall Cobb and Kenny Stills for their Thursday afternoon game against the host Detroit Lions, the team announced.

Cobb (toe) and Stills (quadricep), along with fullback Cullen Gillaspia (back), defensive tackle P.J. Hall (knee/shoulder) and quarterback Josh McCown (illness), did not travel with the team to Detroit.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Cobb will be placed on injured reserve. He has recorded 38 receptions for 441 yards and three touchdowns this season for the Texans (3-7), while Stills has 11 catches for 144 yards and a score.

Will Fuller V is tied with Brandin Cooks for the team lead with 47 catches. Fuller, however, has a club-best 708 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
