Ex-San Jose State CB Jay’Vion Cole transferring to Texas

Former San Jose State cornerback Jay’Vion Cole revealed on social media Sunday that he is transferring to Texas.

Cole was considered one of the top cornerbacks available in the transfer portal.

Cole intercepted seven passes over his first two college seasons — four at FCS Cal Poly in 2022 and three last season in his lone campaign for the Spartans.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Cole has top-notch speed and was a sprinter in high school. He is a native of Oakland, Calif.

The Longhorns have been on the lookout for a cornerback with Ryan Watts moving on to the NFL as a sixth-round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Terrance Brooks recently entering the transfer portal.

Steelers cut C Mason Cole, save $4.75M

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Friday that they released center Mason Cole.

The cost-cutting move saves Pittsburgh $4.75 million — Cole’s $3.25 million salary for 2024 and a $1.5 million roster bonus. The Steelers began Friday just $8.47 million under the salary cap.

Cole, who turns 28 next month, started all 34 regular-season games plus one playoff game during his two seasons with the Steelers.

Cole joined Pittsburgh as an unrestricted free agent following the 2021 season and received a three-year, $15.75 million deal.

He was a 2018 third-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals and spent three seasons with the franchise. Cole played for the Minnesota Vikings in 2021 before becoming a free agent.

Cole has started 73 of 94 games played over his six NFL seasons.

Dolphins place three on reserve/COVID-19 list

Two defensive starters were among three players added to the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday by the Miami Dolphins.

Linebacker Kyle Van Noy and defensive tackle Christian Wilkins were placed on the list along with undrafted rookie receiver Matt Cole.

Placement on the list means a player has either tested positive for the coronavirus or came in close contact with an infected person.

The Dolphins (5-3) also announced the return of rookie wideout Lynn Bowden Jr. from the reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of Sunday’s game against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers (2-6).

Van Noy, 29, has 33 tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries in seven games (six starts) in his first season with Miami. He split his first six seasons with Detroit and New England, winning two Super Bowls with the Patriots.

Wilkins, 24, has 28 tackles, one sack and one interception in eight games (six starts) this season. He was Miami’s first-round pick (13th overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Clemson.
