Titans RB Derrick Henry shakes concussion concern, set for MNF

Derrick Henry never experienced concussion symptoms and was ready to return to the field last Sunday when Titans medical staff held him out in the second half of a loss to the Colts.

Henry plans to barrel straight ahead Monday night when Tennessee visits the Miami Dolphins.

“I guess (trainers and doctors) saw something that they felt like I couldn’t return,” Henry said of his perspective on the head injury analysis by the team last week. “I felt fine. Just took a helmet-to-helmet hit and they saw enough where I couldn’t go back in. I wanted to go back in — it was hard to watch — but I have to respect their decision.

“I can’t fight it — it’s their decision, it’s their call. It sucks, but you have to respect it. I wanted to go out there and continue to play and help us win, but they felt different. … I think the league is trying to be cautious with head injuries, which I respect. It’s all about player safety.”

Henry had 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns when he landed facemask first following a hard hit in the fourth quarter from Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin. Trainers wanted to evaluate Henry for a concussion and ushered him to the locker room under Nissan Stadium before ruling him out for the rest of the game.

Head coach Mike Vrabel said he understood the approach and even went on the field himself in reaction to the force of the contact and the way Henry went to the ground. But Vrabel clarified on Monday that Henry was never entered into concussion protocol because he was not diagnosed with a concussion.

Henry said Thursday he still has no symptoms of a head injury.

“I feel good,” Henry said. “I just got hit in the head, got my bell rung a little bit. You just get back up and shake it off.”

He has 841 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in 12 games this season.

Panthers TE Hayden Hurst has post-traumatic amnesia after concussion

Carolina Panthers tight end Hayden Hurst has no memory of the four hours that followed his Week 10 concussion against the Chicago Bears.

Hurst re-entered that game after being checked for a concussion and entered protocol the following day.

Hurst was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Amnesia and hasn’t played since that Thursday night loss at Soldier Field on Nov. 9.

“I appreciate everyone reaching out & checking on me,” Hurst said Thursday morning on social media. “I suffered a pretty nasty concussion against the Bears a few weeks ago & don’t remember up to 4 hours after the game. Scary situation but the Panthers have been incredible walking me through this process.”

Hurst told ESPN on Thursday that the head injury isn’t season-ending and he expects to return to the field this season.

In the first season of a three-year deal with the Panthers, Hurst has 18 receptions for 184 yards and one touchdown in nine games.

Hurst, 30, went into further detail in a second post via X.

“While it was scary, it is NOT career ending,” he wrote. “I’m starting my return to play this week, so fingers crossed I make it back for the last few weeks! God Bless & Keep Pounding !!!!”

Titans RB Derrick Henry ‘zero symptoms,’ not in concussion protocol

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry is not in concussion protocol, head coach Mike Vrabel clarified Monday, refuting an earlier report.

Henry left Sunday’s 31-28 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth quarter and did not return.

“He was checked and they deemed him not able to return. But doing great, zero symptoms. Worked out this morning,” Vrabel said Monday.

The Titans (4-8) return to action next Monday night against the host Miami Dolphins (9-3).

Henry, 29, rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns before exiting Sunday’s setback against the Colts. Vrabel said he and trainers went to Henry’s side because “of the way he got up,” on Sunday.

“We will monitor how he’s feeling, any symptoms that may come up just like we would any player,” Vrabel said.

The two-time NFL rushing king has rushed for 841 yards and eight touchdowns in 12 games this season.

New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner (1) catches the ball during warmups before a game against the New England Patriots.

Jets CBs Sauce Gardner, D.J. Reed clear concussion protocol

New York Jets starting cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed have both cleared concussion protocol, coach Robert Saleh said Friday.

Reed has missed two games and Gardner missed the Week 6 win against the Philadelphia Eagles. Coming off a bye week, both are expected to play Sunday against the New York Giants.

Gardner, 23, has 20 tackles, three passes defensed and a forced fumble in five starts this season. The 2022 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has two interceptions, 23 passes defensed and 95 tackles in 22 games (all starts).

Reed, 26, recorded 28 tackles in four starts before he was sidelined after Week 4. He has five picks and 302 tackles in 76 games (45 starts) with the San Francisco 49ers (2018-19), Seattle Seahawks (2020-21) and Jets.

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams (33) walks off the field due to injury in the first half against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Monday, Oct. 2, 2023, in East Rutherford.

Report: Jamal Adams won’t be disciplined over outburst

The NFL will not discipline Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams after shouting at the independent concussion doctor on the sidelines Monday night in a game against the New York Giants, ESPN reported Friday.

Adams was removed from the game for evaluation by the league’s concussion adviser after taking a knee to the helmet while tackling Giants quarterback Daniel Jones just nine defensive plays into the game.

It was Adams’ first game back since Week 1 of 2022, when he tore his quad and was lost for that season. Appearing frustrated about being removed, he voiced his displeasure with the red hat, whose sole job is to identify possible concussion injuries and get those players out of the game.

But after looking at video of Adams’ interaction with the doctor, as well as hearing his apology, the NFL declined to fine or otherwise punish Adams.

Adams, 27, appeared wobbly when getting up after the tackle of Jones and was taken to the medical tent on the Seahawks’ sideline. Adams was taken back to the locker room for tests and subsequently ruled out for the rest of the game by the team.

Adams apologized to the unnamed doctor via social media.

“You did everything right when you realized I was concussed, I apologize for any negative energy I brought your way,” Adams wrote.

“Watching the replay, I am thankful for your patience knowing I wasn’t myself in that moment. You’re a real one and you serve a great purpose that benefits the NFL and so many players. Prioritizing player’s health is essential. Much respect to you.”

The Seahawks have a bye this week and play at Cincinnati in Week 6. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday on Seattle Sports 710 that Adams possibly could play in that game.

Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo still in concussion protocol

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remained in the concussion protocol Wednesday, though his coach is hopeful he’ll be able to play in Week 4.

Garoppolo has been participating in meetings but is not expected to practice Wednesday. Garoppolo’s backups are 15-year veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O’Connell.

“But we’ll give the guys reps in practice — they usually get reps anyway, to some degree. It’ll be a little bit more, obviously, if Jimmy’s not out there today. So, we’ll just take it one day at a time, do the best we can and then we’ll see what tomorrow brings,” Raiders coach Josh McDaniels told reporters.

Garoppolo was sacked four times but played every snap in Sunday night’s 23-18 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is unclear when the injury occurred to Garoppolo, who was never checked during the game and finished with 324 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. A postgame evaluation discovered the concussion.

“We’ll see how Jimmy progresses through the week. … It’s moving. We’ll see how fast it goes,” McDaniels added.

Garoppolo, 31, who signed a three-year, $67.5 million deal in the offseason, has thrown for 709 yards, five TDs and six picks in three starts for Las Vegas (1-2).

Hoyer, 37, has a 16-24 record across 15 seasons with eight NFL teams but hasn’t won a game since October 2016.

O’Connell, a fourth-round pick from Purdue, played well in the preseason and could push Hoyer for the starting spot if Garoppolo can’t go against the host Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) on Sunday.

Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo in concussion protocol

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is in concussion protocol, coach Josh McDaniels confirmed Monday.

Garoppolo was sacked four times but played every snap in Sunday night’s 23-18 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It is unclear when the injury occurred to Garoppolo, who was never checked during the game and finished with 324 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Garoppolo, 31, who signed a three-year, $67.5 million deal in the offseason, has thrown for 709 yards, five TDs and six picks in three starts for Las Vegas (1-2).

Veteran Brian Hoyer is the backup quarterback on the depth chart. The 37-year-old journeyman has a 16-24 record across 15 seasons with eight NFL teams.

However, McDaniels would not commit to starting Hoyer if Garoppolo misses time, according to The Athletic.

Rookie Aidan O’Connell, a fourth-round pick from Purdue, played well during the preseason and could push Hoyer for the starting spot if Garoppolo can’t go against the host Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) on Sunday.

Dolphins rule out WR Jaylen Waddle (concussion) vs. Broncos

The Miami Dolphins on Saturday downgraded wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to out because of a concussion for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos at Miami Gardens, Fla.

Waddle was listed as questionable and was able to practice Friday in a limited capacity. He was in concussion protocol following a helmet-to-helmet hit during the 24-17 win Sunday night over New England. Patriots rookie safety Marte Mapu was flagged for unnecessary roughness on the play.

The Dolphins (2-0) elevated wide receiver Robbie Chosen and linebacker Cameron Goode on Saturday from the practice squad to the active roster for the game against the Broncos (0-2).

Waddle, 24, has eight catches for 164 yards through two games. He has 187 receptions for 2,535 yards and 14 scores in 35 games (all starts) since Miami drafted him with the No. 6 overall pick in 2021 out of Alabama.

Chosen, 30, signed with Miami in April and spent the first two games on the practice squad. The former Robbie Anderson has played seven seasons with the New York Jets (2016-19), Carolina Panthers (2020-22) and Arizona Cardinals (2022). He has played in 111 games (86 starts), making 375 receptions for 4,956 yards and 29 touchdowns.

The Dolphins selected Goode, 25, in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of California. He played in the first two games this season.

Commanders rule out TE Logan Thomas (concussion)

Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas will miss Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills due to a concussion, head coach Ron Rivera confirmed Friday.

Thomas was hit in the helmet by Broncos safety Kareem Jackson after catching a 4-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of a 35-32 Week 2 win at Denver. Jackson was ejected from the game but avoided a suspension.

Thomas, 32, started the first two games this season and caught six of 11 targets for 65 yards and a touchdown.

He has 170 catches for 1,571 yards and 13 scores in 80 career games (44 starts) with the Arizona Cardinals (2014), Buffalo Bills (2017-18), Detroit Lions (2019) and Washington.

Second-string tight end John Bates and backups Cole Turner and Curtis Hodges figure to see larger roles Sunday when the Commanders (2-0) host the Bills (1-1).
