Cowboys QB Dak Prescott progressing in recovery

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is encouraged with the progress of quarterback Dak Prescott as he continues his recovery from thumb surgery.

Prescott has missed the Cowboys’ last four games — all wins — after injuring his thumb in the season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has been a part of the “rehab group” since undergoing surgery on Sept. 12.

“Dak had a good day (on Wednesday),” McCarthy said. “He threw post-practice. It went well. The plan today is to have him participate in the quarterback school drills and he will throw again in post-practice.”

When asked why it was post-practice and not during practice, McCarthy was quick with a response.

“We’re preparing to get ready for a game, and he’s still in the rehab phase,” he said.

Cooper Rush is in line to make his fifth straight start for Dallas (4-1), which could pull even atop the NFC East with a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles (5-0) on Sunday night.

McCarthy also said linebacker Micah Parsons “will do a little more today” as he attempts to work his past a groin injury.

Parsons received NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Wednesday after he recorded two sacks and five tackles in the Cowboys’ 22-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Parsons shares the NFL lead with six sacks on the season.

Jerry Jones: Cowboys to test Dak Prescott’s ‘spin’ Wed.

Dak Prescott could get the thumbs up for Week 6, but only if he passes the spin test.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday the doubt around Prescott is whether he has enough hand and grip strength in his right thumb to spin the ball with the velocity needed to throw passes on target. If he can, Jones and the Cowboys should get Prescott back in the lineup Sunday with the NFC East lead on the line against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles (5-0).

“He’s gotta really be able to spin the ball,” Jones said. “We’ll start working on that Wednesday real hard. We know Dak Prescott can play, but can he spin the ball?”

Backup Cooper Rush spun a four-game winning streak since replacing the injured Prescott. Dallas scored a defensive touchdown to down the Los Angeles Rams last week and improve to 4-1, firmly in second place in the division by virtue of a head-to-head win over the 4-1 New York Giants.

Grip was the issue for Prescott last week. He attempted to strengthen his hand and right thumb following the removal of a stitch left over from surgery last month. But Prescott couldn’t keep the ball locked in with his grip and continued in the rehab phase.

Jones said there is no thought from the franchise that Rush would remain in the lineup even after Prescott is fully cleared.

“When we get him back, that’ll be a real additive. We’ll be a mess (for opponents) if we can keep playing defense like this,” Jones said.

Defense has driven the Cowboys’ rise in the standings.

Dallas ranks first in quarterback hits, is tied for first in rushing touchdowns allowed (1), second in sacks (20) and third in points allowed per game (14.3).

Cowboys prep QB Cooper Rush, await word on Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys are giving backup quarterback Cooper Rush reps with the first team offense on Wednesday in case starter Dak Prescott is sidelined when the team faces the Vikings in Minnesota on Sunday night.

Prescott is still being evaluated for a calf strain that led to him wearing a protective boot home from the Cowboys’ win at New England in Week 6. He smiled and said he wanted the media to have something to talk about this week when asked earlier this how he was feeling.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Prescott will go through individual drills on Wednesday before being evaluated by the team’s medical staff.

Prescott, 28, has thrown for 1,813 yards, with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions through six games this season.

Rush, 27, has appeared in six games since entering the league with the Cowboys in 2017, completing one of three passes for two yards in his career.

Prescott was lost for the season with a dislocated ankle in October 2020. He rehabbed for months, signed a long-term contract and reported to training camp in tremendous shape by his own measure.

During the Cowboys’ first padded practice, Prescott injured his shoulder and rested for most of the preseason.

He hasn’t missed time during the regular season, returning to start Week 1 at Tampa Bay. Prescott is currently the second favorite for the 2021 NFL MVP Award — undefeated Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is first — according to BetMGM.
