WR Amari Cooper expected to make Bills debut Sunday

The Buffalo Bills expect newly acquired wide receiver Amari Cooper to make his debut for the team Sunday against the visiting Tennessee Titans.

Cooper, 30, came to the Bills via trade from the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. Originally, the team was undecided on whether he would play against the Titans, but coach Sean McDermott sounded more certain of a plan Friday.

“We’ll see. I think so,” McDermott said when asked if Cooper would play this week for the Bills (4-2).

McDermott said he will confer with the coaching staff before making a final decision.

Coming off a career-high 1,250 receiving yards last year for Cleveland, Cooper got off to a slow start this season. In six games, he had 24 receptions for 250 yards and two touchdowns. His per-catch average of 10.4 yards is on pace for a career low and 7 yards under last year’s career-best average.

Now with his fourth NFL franchise, Cooper gets an upgrade at quarterback from Deshaun Watson to Josh Allen, who has thrown 156 passes this year without an interception.

“As far as playing with Josh, I’ve always been (a) fan of his game,” Cooper said this week. “I’m sure to see it up close and personal and play alongside him. I’m sure it’s going to be great. I’m just excited to turn a new chapter and to be able to contribute.”

The Bills haven’t had a go-to receiver this season after trading Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in the offseason.

Buffalo also is expected to have defensive tackle Ed Oliver (hamstring) on the field. Oliver, 26, was inactive for each of the past two games. He has a sack among his five tackles in four games this season.

“I expect him at this point to play in the game,” McDermott said Friday of Oliver.

Running back James Cook (toe) also is expected to play, while running back Ray Davis is now limited after coming away with a calf injury in practice Thursday.

The Bills will stick with struggling kicker Tyler Bass after multiple kickers were brought in for a tryout Wednesday before Lucas Havrisik was signed to the practice squad. Bass, 27, has converted nine of 12 field goals and 18 of 20 extra points this season.

Bills acquire WR Amari Cooper from Browns

The Buffalo Bills have acquired veteran wideout Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns.

The Bills confirmed Tuesday that they will receive Cooper and a sixth-round draft selection in 2025 in exchange for a third-round pick in 2025 and a seventh-rounder in 2026.

The move comes one day after the Bills’ 23-20 victory against the New York Jets, who also upgraded their receivers room Tuesday by trading for Davante Adams.

Cooper, 30, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection with seven career 1,000-yard seasons. He has 24 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns in six starts this season with the Browns (1-5).

The move gives Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen a marquee receiver to replace the departed Stefon Diggs, who was traded to the Houston Texans in April.

Tight end Dalton Kincaid leads the Bills (4-2) with 21 receptions and wide receiver Khalil Shakir leads the team with 249 receiving yards on 20 catches.

Over 10 NFL seasons, Cooper has 691 catches for 9,736 yards and 62 touchdowns in 146 games (139 starts) with the then-Oakland Raiders (2015-18), Dallas Cowboys (2018-21) and Browns.

Cooper is in the final season of a five-year, $100 million contract signed with the Cowboys in 2020. He is due to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025.

LB Edgerrin Cooper leaving Texas A&M for NFL

Texas A&M linebacker Edgerrin Cooper declared for the 2024 NFL Draft and is projected to be a first-round pick.

Named an All-American on Monday, Cooper is the top-ranked linebacker currently entered in the draft by Field Level Media and Pro Football Focus.

He will not play in the Texas Bowl against Oklahoma State.

“Like many in my position, my goal has always been to achieve the professional level of football,” Cooper said in a social media post. “I’ve spent much of my college career perfecting my craft and bettering myself in every way possible to be prepared for the opportunity to perform in the NFL. While I always have room to grow, I feel prepared to enter this next season of life.”

He had 8.0 sacks and 17 tackles for loss in 2023. He also led the team with 84 tackles and was named first-team All-SEC.

Browns WR Amari Cooper had offseason surgery

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper revealed Tuesday he underwent core muscle surgery in February.

Cooper said he is in his eighth week of recovery and on track to be ready for the season.

“I feel good,” the four-time Pro Bowl selection told reporters. “I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”

Cooper, 28, said he played through pain at the end of last season, still finishing with his sixth 1,000-yard campaign.

He underwent the procedure with Philadelphia specialist Dr. William Meyers, according to Cleveland.com.

Cooper caught 78 passes for 1,160 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns in 17 starts in his first season with the Browns in 2022.

He has 595 receptions for 8,236 yards and 55 TDs in 125 games (118 starts) with the then-Oakland Raiders (2015-18), Dallas Cowboys (2018-21) and Browns.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott had surgery; WR Cooper on block?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott underwent surgery on his left shoulder at the end of the 2021 regular season, addressing an injury incurred in the first contact practice of training camp last summer.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said the team expects “no issues” with Prescott’s recovery and that he will only experience short-term limitations during rehab.

Speaking for the first time since a press conference with owner Jerry Jones in the days after the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers ended the Cowboys’ season, McCarthy also addressed lingering elephants in the room — rumors the team is clearing the runway to hire Sean Payton as head coach and that Dallas is shopping $20 million wide receiver Amari Cooper.

“I’ll just say this: It’s a narrative I don’t want to be a part of,” McCarthy said of the Payton rumors. “I don’t think anybody wants to be a part of it on either side of the fence. Nothing good comes out of that. I think you do need to understand, I get to spend a lot of time with Jerry — both as the owner and as the GM. In our conversations, we talk about the partnership between the head coach and the GM. The strength of the partnership, short-term plan, long-term plan. … He addressed it, we laughed about it and moved on.

“I don’t see it as any type of topic or anything that gets in the way of winning.”

McCarthy said he and Jones are speaking regularly about the “major decisions about our current roster” that reportedly include Cooper’s future with the team. Jones called out Cooper for not producing on the level expected given his salary on the heels of a $100 million contract extension.

McCarthy said he loves “getting the ball to Amari Cooper” and he loves players “wanting to do more.”

Executive vice president Stephen Jones said Monday at the combine that there were “moving parts” and things that would develop regarding Cooper that he couldn’t address, again raising the notion the 27-year-old could be traded.

Cowboys WR Amari Cooper (COVID-19 protocols) out vs. Chiefs

Dallas Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper will miss Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs after entering COVID-19 protocols.

The Cowboys indicated Cooper would also likely miss the Thanksgiving Day contest against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Dallas is ranked No. 1 in the NFL in scoring offense (31.6 points per game) and total offense (433.9 yards per game), so not having Cooper against the powerful Chiefs rates as a huge blow.

Cooper has 44 receptions for 583 yards and five touchdowns in nine games this season. In 50 games with the Cowboys, Cooper has 268 catches for 3,611 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Overall, Cooper has 493 receptions for 6,794 yards and 43 touchdowns in 102 games over seven seasons. The four-time Pro Bowler played his first 3 1/2 seasons for the then-Oakland Raiders (2015-18) before being dealt to the Cowboys.

Dallas got wideout Michael Gallup back last weekend after a seven-game absence due to a left calf strain. Gallup, who had 1,107 receiving yards in 2019, could have a bigger role with Cooper sidelined.

Dallas listed three players as questionable against the Chiefs: left tackle Tyron Smith (ankle), cornerback Kelvin Joseph (personal reasons) and cornerback Nahshon Wright (hamstring).

Reports: Top 2023 QB Arch Manning visiting Alabama

Arch Manning, the No. 1 quarterback in the Class of 2023, is continuing to make the rounds of possible colleges and is visiting Alabama this weekend, according to multiple reports.

The grandson of Archie Manning, Arch is the son of the oldest Manning brother, Cooper. His uncles are Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Peyton and Eli.

It is part of a busy June for Arch Manning, who already has made unofficial visits to Clemson, Texas and SMU. Georgia reportedly is up next weekend, and FOX 8 in New Orleans said he also recently visited LSU. The scholarship offers are coming in, with Notre Dame and Southern Cal among the suitors.

“You know, I told Arch all of these are shiny, red Ferraris,” Cooper Manning told WWL-TV in New Orleans this week. “They’re all going to look great. He’ll just learn his way through it here and then figure out what’s the best fit when it’s time. I don’t think he’s in a huge rush. I mean, he has two more years of high school.”

The younger Manning, who is 6-foot-4 and 208 pounds, plays at Isidore Newman in New Orleans. As a sophomore, he led the school to a 9-1 record and the Louisiana Division III state semifinals.

His family legacy is in the SEC. His grandfather and Uncle Eli played at Ole Miss, Uncle Peyton at Tennessee before beginning their NFL careers.

Jaguars sign return specialist Pharoh Cooper

Return specialist Pharoh Cooper signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The one-year deal for Cooper marks his fifth NFL stop following stints with the Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Rams, Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals.

Cooper was an All-Pro return man in 2017 with the Rams and joins another 2017 All-Pro returner, Jamal Agnew, in Jacksonville.

Cooper averaged 27.4 yards per kickoff return in ’17, when Agnew returned two punts for touchdowns with the Detroit Lions.

The Rams selected Cooper in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
