Michigan co-OC Matt Weiss on leave amid reported investigation

Michigan placed co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss on leave, an athletic department spokesman told multiple outlets Tuesday, as the university’s police department investigates his potential involvement in computer-related crimes on campus.

The Detroit News and ESPN reported that Weiss’ home in Ann Arbor was searched by police on Jan. 10. Police have also investigated Schembechler Hall, the home base of the Wolverines’ football program.

“The University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during December 21-23, 2022,” University of Michigan deputy chief of police Crystal James said in a statement, without naming Weiss. “Since this is an ongoing investigation there is no additional information to share.”

Further details about the nature of the crimes were not yet known.

Weiss, 39, just completed his second season on Michigan’s staff. After 12 seasons working for John Harbaugh on the Baltimore Ravens’ coaching staff, Weiss was hired by Harbaugh’s brother Jim in 2021 to serve as the Wolverines’ quarterbacks coach. The co-offensive coordinator title, shared with Sherrone Moore, was added between seasons.

Michigan is coming off a 13-1 season with a Big Ten title and a loss to TCU in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Jim Harbaugh said Monday that he will be back in 2023, turning down reported interest from NFL teams. The program also received a notice of allegations from the NCAA this month for Level I and II violations.

Falcons WR Calvin Ridley among alleged victims of crime spree

Suspended Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley is among the victims of an alleged gang-related crime spree in the Atlanta area, the district attorney said.

Also targeted was Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan, said Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney.

On Monday, Willis unveiled a 220-count indictment that a grand jury handed up last week that charges 26 alleged members of the Drug Rich gang with a breaking into homes and carrying out burglaries in Fulton County over the past year. She said the homes of athletes, entertainers, social media influencers and those who display their luxuries on social media were ripe for crime.

Willis said Drug Rich members have committed a string of violent crimes in addition to home invasions, including kidnappings and armed robberies. The homes of Ridley and Guzan were broken into, she said.

“What they do is target people who show their wealth on social media,” she said. “So I do have a message for the public: Where it is kind of fun to put your things on social media and show off, unfortunately these gangs are becoming more savvy, more sophisticated in the way that they target you.”

Ridley, for one, has been known to flaunt expensive jewelry on his Instagram account.

He is suspended indefinitely for gambling on NFL games last season. His suspension will last through at least the 2022 season.

Those were the Goodfellas words spoken from Jimmy Conway to Henry Hill during his first “pinchin’.”  In the movie, Hill got pinched for selling illegal cartons of cigarettes, but it made us think: What happens to an illegal sports bookie when he gets arrested?

We sat down and talked with former judge John Wilson of the Brooklyn and Bronx Criminal Courts to discuss his experiences with illegal bookies during his time as a lawyer and judge, and to see how law enforcement might proceed with illegal bookies now that sports gambling has been made legal. 

Illegal Bookies Found Themselves in Court More Often in the 1980s-90s Then They Do Now. That Could Change As Number of Legal Sports Betting States Grows.

Wilson began his career as an assistant district attorney in the Bronx in the late 1980s, before becoming a criminal defense lawyer for 11 years.  In 2004, he got elected to be a civil courts judge, and because of his experience with criminal law, Wilson was placed on the criminal bench serving in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He’s been around the legal system and collected a great amount of experiences during his time in law, and he has had his fair share of run-ins with illegal sports bookies during his tenure. (Disclosure: Wilson is the author’s uncle.)

As a young ADA, Wilson said gambling violations were much more prevalent then than they are now. He recalled that most violations he saw were from bookies “running numbers.” This deals with horse-racing trifectas, and it’s what people in the poorer neighborhoods bet on because they can’t afford to get to the track. The bookies or the number runners would have actual slips of papers of that people from these neighborhoods had bet on when they got arrested.
