Favorites emerge to land Raiders’ Maxx Crosby after trade fallout

The Las Vegas Raiders find themselves in an awkward situation after the Ravens backed out of a trade that would have sent pass rusher Maxx Crosby to Baltimore.

The Ravens agreed on Friday to send a pair of first-round picks to the Raiders for the former All-Pro. With Crosby off the market, many teams committed significant resources toward upgrading their pass rush during the first two days when teams could negotiate with free agents.

Las Vegas also spent heavily on both sides of the ball. So when Baltimore backed out of the deal on Tuesday, it left the Raiders with their own salary cap predicament and fewer potential suitors interested in landing Crosby.

At least one sportsbook still favors Crosby to play elsewhere next season — with -200 odds that he will not be with Las Vegas compared to +150 odds that he’ll stay for an eighth season with the Raiders. That implies a 33.3% likelihood of Crosby playing for Las Vegas in 2026.

That begs the question: where might Crosby end up?

The shortest odds belong to the reigning AFC champions, followed by an NFC contender seeking to add in a few key spots to take the next step.

The Patriots were believed to be interested in Crosby before the Ravens deal was announced. With K’Lavon Chaisson agreeing to a deal with Washington, New England has a real need for a pass rusher like Crosby despite adding Dre’Mont Jones. But will the Patriots be willing to part with the pair of first-round picks the Raiders are still seeking for Crosby?

The Bears came an overtime loss away from reaching the NFC Championship Game. Since then, they signed defensive back Coby Bryant from the world champion Seahawks, and Crosby could be another key piece toward pushing Chicago over the top.

The Bears would need to find cap space and determine if the asking price is worth it for a 28-year-old recovering from knee surgery. They reportedly were willing to give up two first-round picks before being outbid by Baltimore, which offered a first-rounder 11 spots higher than Chicago’s.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones loves making splashy headlines, and adding Crosby would certainly do that. Dallas also invested significant money in free agents this week, but the Cowboys still have an extra first-round pick this year from the Micah Parsons trade. Interestingly, Crosby played high school football in Colleyville, which is less than an hour outside Dallas.

The two other teams with odds shorter than +1000 to land Crosby have different situations. Would the Browns look to pair him opposite Myles Garrett, or potentially deal the single-season sacks record holder? In that scenario, Cleveland could look to acquire draft capital while sending Garrett to a contending team, such as New England or Philadelphia.

While great for trade speculation, the Browns would likely have a difficult time trading the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year due to the dead cap space it would create. And the Eagles are reportedly interested in extending defensive tackle Jalen Carter rather than including him in a multi-team deal that would land Garrett in return.

And then there’s the real possibility that Crosby suits up for the Silver and Black next season. Sports Illustrated reported that he was back in the team facility at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and considers himself a Raiders employee moving forward.

Returned to sender: Maxx Crosby at Raiders’ facility, sides mending fences

Signs point to the Las Vegas Raiders welcoming Maxx Crosby back into the fold as a result of the return-to-sender rejection of a trade with the Baltimore Ravens.

Sports Illustrated reported the star defensive end was back at the team facility to rehab from left knee surgery at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and considers himself an employee of the Raiders going forward.

The Raiders agreed to a trade on Friday with the Ravens, sending Crosby to Baltimore in exchange for multiple first-round picks. But the deal was pending the results of Crosby’s physical and was not official until Wednesday, the first day of the league year. On Tuesday night, the Ravens informed the Raiders the deal was off, according to multiple reports, because of questions surrounding Crosby’s health and what they considered a “failed physical.”

On Wednesday morning, the Ravens reportedly agreed to a four-year contract with free agent defensive end Trey Hendrickson. The 31-year-old is also coming back from surgery. He played in seven games last season and underwent core muscle surgery. The terms of the agreement, with a value of around $112 million according to multiple reports, matches the total compensation remaining on Crosby’s deal.

NFL Network reported the Chicago Bears were willing to part with two first-round picks to acquire Crosby but were outbid. The Ravens likely jumped ahead because Baltimore’s 2026 first-round pick is 11 slots better than Chicago’s No. 25 overall pick.

The Raiders and Crosby, 28, had been at odds since fired head coach Pete Carroll decided to sit him late in the 2025 season when the fiery Pro Bowl talent argued he wasn’t hurt.

By reversing direction, the Ravens retained the No. 14 overall pick and their 2027 first-rounder promised in the handshake agreement.

The Raiders signed two edge rushers — Malcolm Koonce and Kwity Paye — but remain responsible for Crosby’s contract and the $35.7 million cap hit for 2026, per Spotrac. Las Vegas also signed Ravens free agent center Tyler Linderbaum.

Trade season is about to pick up in the NFL, with the window open on Tuesday for teams to apply the franchise tag and free agency set to begin next month.

Last March, the biggest deals consummated before checks were cut to free agents were trades sending DK Metcalf from the Seahawks to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle offloading quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, and left tackle Laremy Tunsil relocating from the Houston Texans to the Commanders and being joined by wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who came to Washington from the San Francisco 49ers.

While Seattle’s plan wasn’t fully clear at the time — the Seahawks signed free agent Sam Darnold and went on to win Super Bowl LX — there are plenty of teams with intentions to kick the tires on trades this month as part of a long-term vision unclear to most observers.

What will it cost to make those deals reality?

Here’s a look at veterans who could be on the trade block and what it might cost to execute a deal for the suitor and the seller.

With four years and more than $110 million left on A.J. Brown’s contract, he’s not a fit for every WR-needy operation. It’s debatable if he can fit back in with the Philadelphia Eagles.

A love-hate relationship developed between quarterback Jalen Hurts and Brown somewhere along the line and “sorry” isn’t going to fix it. But to what ends will the Eagles go to get Brown out of their hair? They’d have to eat $43.5 million on the 2026 cap if he’s traded. But does GM Howie Roseman decide harmony is priceless and pull the plug on this one anyway? Brown appears destined to take the path of Jalen Ramsey, the 31-year-old universally lauded cornerback who has been traded three times (Jaguars to Rams, Rams to Dolphins, Dolphins to Steelers).

Only about $5 million in dead cap would hit the Raiders’ books in 2026 and if the front office — plus over-the-shoulder minority owner Tom Brady — find a trade they can get behind, Crosby might be on the move. If the New York Jets or Dallas Cowboys decide Crosby if worth multiple first-round picks or other valuable assets (an offensive tackle would be a good starting point for Raiders GM John Spytek), now would be a fine time to hit reset and clear $30 million from the ’26 cap. If any suitor balks at a Godfather trade demand, Las Vegas should sit tight until at least the October trade deadline when Crosby’s value will still be significant.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray
Age at season’s start: 29
2026 cap hit: $52.7 million
2026 cap hit with new team if traded: $24.9 million

Comparison shoppers, avert your eyes. The Cardinals had Murray on the field for 30 total games the past three seasons and paid him $158.5 million in base salary and bonuses from 2023-25. It’s understandable why Arizona wants to move on, and the structure of his deal implies there could be interest despite the history of injuries and inconsistent performance.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa
Age at season’s start: 28
2026 cap hit: $56.3 million
2026 cap hit with new team if traded: $42.9 million

A dead cap hit of $45.2 million sounds devastating, but the Dolphins could survive it if they believe in seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers or draft another potential replacement in April at a fraction of the 2026 salary owed Tagovailoa. At his current cost, keeping Tagovailoa would mean Miami pays him more than the Rams pay Matthew Stafford ($48.3 million cap number), the 2025 NFL MVP and well above what these recognizable names will cost their clubs next season: Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Sam Darnold, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy, Trevor Lawrence.

The new decision-makers in Miami survived this process in Green Bay when Aaron Rodgers was traded and the Packers put their trust in untested Jordan Love.

The Dolphins aren’t likely going to cash in on a Tagovailoa trade by netting a massive return. Almost any compensation, in fact, is unlikely. The current scenario is more similar to the Broncos swallowing a cap hit of over $80 million and ending the marriage with Russell Wilson after one season paired with head coach Sean Payton. Denver would testify the move was the right one. The Broncos drafted Bo Nix and finished the 2025 regular season as the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Raiders’ Maxx Crosby upset that he will sit out vs. Giants

The Las Vegas Raiders informed Maxx Crosby that he won’t play in Sunday’s home game against the New York Giants, and the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end wasn’t happy about being shut down.

Crosby has been dealing with a knee injury and the Raiders (2-13) decided there was no reason to play him against New York. Crosby was formally ruled out on Friday’s injury report.

The news apparently prompted Crosby to leave the team facility.

“After an evaluation we did on Monday or Tuesday, it just looks too bad,” Las Vegas coach Pete Carroll told reporters. “And so, he didn’t take the news like that, and I didn’t want to take the news like that. … He was talking about, ‘I’d like to get out of here.’

“And I said, ‘Yeah, get out of here.’ So he took off.”

The loser of the contest between the Raiders and Giants (2-13) will be in prime position to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft.

That’s another subject Crosby wants nothing to do with.

“Yeah, I don’t give a s— about the pick,” Crosby said earlier this week. “I don’t play for that. My job is to be the best defensive end in the world. That’s what I focus on every day — and being a leader and a great influence.”

Crosby received his fifth Pro Bowl nod earlier this week. He has amassed 73 tackles, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles and his first career interception in 15 games.

Overall, Crosby has 439 tackles, 69.5 sacks and 11 forced fumbles in 110 games (104 starts) in seven seasons with the Raiders.

On Wednesday, Las Vegas sat down two of its other best players, placing standout tight end Brock Bowers (knee) and safety Jeremy Chinn (back) on injured reserve.

Second-year pro Bowers had 64 receptions for 680 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games (eight starts) this season. He was named to his second straight Pro Bowl earlier this week.

Chinn ranks second on the squad with 114 tackles to go with two forced fumbles.

Tackle Kolton Miller (ankle) also was ruled out against the Giants. Running back Raheem Mostert (ankle/knee) and receiver Jack Bech (back) are questionable.

The Raiders have dropped nine consecutive games in Carroll’s first season as coach.

Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell, DE Maxx Crosby miss practice

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell missed practice Thursday as he recovers from a bone bruise in his left knee.

O’Connell was injured during a 28-13 road loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. He was carted off the field but avoided a serious injury. He’s hoping to be able to start against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.

“Obviously, we’ve got a longer week this week, which helps, and so just really taking it day by day,” O’Connell, 26, said Thursday. “Obviously, not something I’ve been through with this particular injury.”

O’Connell has passed for 899 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions in six games (four starts) this season. He missed four games earlier this season after breaking his right (throwing) thumb in Week 7 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Las Vegas star defensive end Maxx Crosby also missed Thursday’s session as he deals with an ankle injury.

Crosby has 7.5 sacks in 12 games this season while seeing his production slip. The three-time Pro Bowl selection had a career-best 14.5 sacks last season to mark his third time in double digits since entering the league in 2019 when the franchise was in Oakland.

Defensive tackle Adam Butler (concussion) and cornerback Sam Webb (back) also missed practice for the Raiders.

Raiders WR Davante Adams, DE Maxx Crosby ruled out for Week 4

Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams and defensive end Maxx Crosby are out Sunday when the Cleveland Browns visit Las Vegas.

Adams is dealing with a hamstring injury and shares the team lead with 18 receptions in 2024. He has a team-leading 209 yards and one TD catch.

Crosby, the Raiders’ top pass rusher with a team-high 3.0 sacks in 2024, will sit with a left ankle injury. Crosby was injured in the fourth quarter Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens and attempted to play hurt last week in a loss to the Carolina Panthers.

A six-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro, Adams has started all 37 games he has played with the Raiders, beginning in 2022 when he led the NFL with 14 touchdown catches.

Adams has 890 career receptions for 10,990 yards and 96 touchdowns in 153 regular-season games (146 starts) for the Green Bay Packers (2014-21) and Raiders.

Crosby, 27, has 14 tackles, including five tackles for loss and three sacks, in three games for Las Vegas.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Crosby has 335 career tackles, including 93 tackles for loss and 55 sacks in 86 regular-season games (80 starts). The franchise selected him in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Eastern Michigan.

Mason Crosby signed as Giants’ fourth kicker of season

The New York Giants signed veteran kicker Mason Crosby on Friday as the team placed Cade York on injured reserve with a quad injury.

York is the third kicker to be placed on IR by the Giants this season, joining Graham Gano (knee surgery) and Randy Bullock, who injured his hamstring in last week’s loss to the New Orleans Saints.

In steps the 39-year-old Crosby. Green Bay’s all-time leading scorer with 1,918 regular-season points since being drafted in 2007, Crosby was not re-signed by the Packers after last season. He spent Dec. 6-12 on the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad.

Crosby is 11th on the NFL’s all-time scoring list and has made 395 career field goals.

He will be active for Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and Crosby’s first field-goal attempt will mark the first time in franchise history in which the Giants have used four different kickers in a single season.

The Giants began the season with Gano, who missed 6 of 17 field-goal attempts as he dealt with the knee issue that eventually required surgery. Bullock took over for the next six games before suffering his hamstring injury on a kickoff following a 56-yard field goal against the Saints.

The Giants had planned to turn to York for the final three games of the season, but he left Thursday’s practice with the quad injury.

Rams sign PK Mason Crosby to practice squad

Kicker Mason Crosby was signed to the practice squad of the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday after 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Unsigned since making 25 of 29 field goals with the Packers in 2022, Crosby worked out for the Rams on Oct. 25, but Los Angeles signed Lucas Havrisik off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. Havrisik, 24, has missed two field goals over his last two games.

Crosby, 39, kicked for the Packers from 2007-22 and is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer (1,918 points). Crosby ranks 13th in NFL history with 395 made field goals.

Last season, Crosby converted 37 of 39 PATs in 17 games. He made at least one field goal of 50-plus yards in each of his 16 seasons with Green Bay.

The Rams released Brett Maher in October following a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in which he missed two field goals and an extra-point attempt.

Report: K Mason Crosby works out with Rams

Longtime Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby was part of a group working out for the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday, NFL Network reported.

The Rams released Brett Maher on Tuesday, two days after he missed two field goals and an extra-point attempt in a 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Los Angeles signed kicker Lucas Havrisik off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad Tuesday, but the 24-year-old has never appeared in a regular-season game.

Crosby, 39, kicked for the Packers from 2007-22. He is the venerable franchise’s all-time leading scorer (1,918 points) and ranks 13th in NFL history with 395 made field goals.

Last season, Crosby converted 25 of 29 field goals and 37 of 39 PATs in 17 games. He made at least one field goal of 50-plus yards in each of his 16 seasons with Green Bay.

Packers place CB Eric Stokes (knee, ankle) on IR

The Green Bay Packers placed cornerback Eric Stokes on injured reserve Saturday.

The move comes six days after Stokes sustained knee and ankle injuries to his right leg during a 15-9 loss to the Detroit Lions. Stokes will miss at least four games but also is expected to undergo surgery for at least one of the injuries.

Green Bay signed cornerback Corey Ballentine off the practice squad to fill the roster opening.

The Packers also elevated kicker Ramiz Ahmed from the practice squad in case Mason Crosby (back) isn’t able to kick on Sunday.

Stokes, 23, was a first-round pick (29th overall) in 2021. He has 26 tackles in nine games this season.
