Trump budget plan would cut funding for brain injury research

If the Trump administration’s 2026 fiscal budget request is approved by Congress, it would eliminate the Centers for Disease Control department in charge of traumatic brain injury research and education, including the department’s $8.25 million in federal funding.

On April 1, the five employees responsible for administering the U.S. government’s primary TBI program were placed on paid administrative leave by the CDC.

Dr. Owen Perlman, a board member of the Brain Injury Association of America’s board of directors, said the budget cuts would “roll back decades of progress” on TBI research and education.

“For many people with concussions or certainly moderate or severe brain injuries, there’s no endpoint,” Perlman said. “It’s a lifetime problem, and there needs to be lifetime funding for it.”

Heads Up, which administers concussion-prevention programs for youth and high-school coaches in 45 states, would be disbanded if the budget proposal is approved. The CDC employees who were put on leave managed the program, whose website says more than 10 million people have taken part in its training programs online.

“We’re really worried about the hundreds of thousands of coaches who have to take this training,” a CDC official told ESPN. “This is really built in, and we’ve lost the whole team (behind the program).”

As part of the Trump administration’s budget, the National Institutes of Health, which focuses on medical issues including stroke and migraines, would maintain an institute for brain research. It’s unknown if any TBI programs would be included.

Jaguars: No player released because of vaccination status

The Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday issued a statement dismissing the notion that any player was released because of their vaccination status.

The statement came one day after Jaguars coach Urban Meyer said he and general manager Trent Baalke considered a player’s vaccination status during final roster cuts.

Meyer’s comments were not well received by the NFL Players Association, which has since launched an investigation into the matter.

The Jaguars said Wednesday that roster moves were made solely upon a player’s ability to help the team win.

“Availability is one of the many factors taken into account when making roster decisions. We have vaccinated and unvaccinated players on our roster, and no player was released because of their vaccination status,” the Jaguars said in a statement.

“Ultimately, decisions are based on a player’s ability to help the Jaguars win. We educate our players and respect personal decisions as it pertains to the vaccine. We want to keep our players, staff and families safe as we comply with protocols related to both health and safety and competition on game days.”

Meyer said the following on Tuesday in regard to the team’s decisions on player cuts:

“Everyone was considered. That was part of the (considerations such as) production, let’s start talking about this, and also is he vaccinated or not? Can I say that that was a decision-maker? It was certainly in consideration.”

Reports: Rosen, Siemian among QBs released Saturday

Former first-round draft pick Josh Rosen was among the quarterbacks released Saturday as NFL teams cut their rosters to the 53-man limit.

The Miami Dolphins cut Rosen, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2018 draft, opting for the QB tandem of veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Tua Tagovailoa. Coach Brian Flores called Rosen “immensely talented” when he announced the 23-year-old’s departure.

Other quarterbacks to be released, according to reports, included: Kyle Lauletta (Atlanta Falcons); Trevor Siemian (Tennessee Titans); Brandon Allen and Jake Dolegala (Cincinnati Bengals); Kevin Davidson and Garrett Gilbert (Cleveland Browns); Mike Glennon and Josh Dobbs (Jacksonville Jaguars); rookie Brian Lewerke (New England Patriots); and rookie Steven Montez (Washington Football Team).

Rosen, Siemian, Allen and Glennon all have starting experience in the NFL.
