Former NFL CB D.J. Hayden among 6 dead in car accident

Former NFL cornerback D.J. Hayden was among six people killed in Houston early Saturday morning after a car sped through a red light and caused a collision with another vehicle. He was 33.

Per Houston police, four people were pronounced dead at the scene and two more perished after being taken to a local hospital. Police noted that five males — including former University of Houston cornerback Zach McMillian, Hayden’s teammate — and one female were among the fatalities.

A two-time All-Conference USA honoree with Houston, Hayden made national headlines after a collision in practice caused a tear in his heart. He was discharged from the hospital a week later and was selected by the then-Oakland Raiders with the 12th overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hayden recorded 328 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles in 92 career games (41 starts) with the Raiders (2013-16), Detroit Lions (2017), Jacksonville Jaguars (2018-20) and Washington Commanders (2021).

Panthers WR DJ Chark (hamstring) ruled out vs. Falcons

Carolina Panthers wide receiver DJ Chark on Friday was ruled out for the team’s season opener against the host Atlanta Falcons.

Chark turned in a limited practice on Friday after missing the first two sessions of the week due to a hamstring injury.

Rookie quarterback Bryce Young could be without another wideout in his NFL debut, too. Adam Thielen, who is nursing an ankle injury, was limited in practice on Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Terrace Marshall, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Laviska Shenault Jr. and rookie Jonathan Mingo are the other members of the wide-receiver room for the Panthers.

Chark, 26, had 30 receptions for 502 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games (10 starts) last season for the Detroit Lions. He signed a one-year, $5 million contract with Carolina in March.

Through 54 career games (40 starts), Chark has 177 catches for 2,544 yards and 18 touchdowns with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2018-21) and Lions (2022).

Thielen, 33, is in his first season with the Panthers after playing with the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-22. The two-time Pro Bowl selection (2017-18) has 534 receptions for 6,682 yards and 55 touchdowns in 135 career games (101 starts).

In 2022, Thielen started all 17 games and finished with 70 catches, 716 yards and six TDs.

Jaguars WR Chark (chest, back) ruled out vs. Dolphins

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver D.J. Chark has been downgraded to out for Thursday’s game against the visiting Miami Dolphins, the team announced.

Chark initially was designated as questionable with chest and back injuries. The Pro Bowl wideout sustained those injuries while leaping for a 45-yard reception during the first quarter of the Jaguars’ 33-30 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

With Chark sidelined, Keelan Cole and rookie Laviska Shenault Jr. should see additional targets against the Dolphins (0-2). Fellow wideout Dede Westbrook likely will draw into the lineup for the first time this season for the Jaguars (1-1).

Chark, 24, has recorded seven catches for a team-high 109 yards and a touchdown. He has 94 receptions for 1,291 yards and nine scores in 28 career games since being selected by Jacksonville in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Jaguars previously ruled out center Brandon Linder (knee) and placed kicker Josh Lambo (left hip) on injured reserve.
