Cowboys’ Dak Prescott won’t face charges for alleged assault

Seven years after a woman alleges that Dak Prescott sexually assaulted her, Dallas police announced Thursday that they will not pursue charges against the Cowboys quarterback.

An investigation determined there wasn’t enough evidence against Prescott to proceed with the case.

“I want to thank the Dallas Police Department and Dallas County District Attorneys’ office for their thorough investigation of the allegations against Dak Prescott,” the quarterback’s attorney, Levi McCathern, said in a statement. “As we knew they would, they found nothing in their extensive exploration of the facts that would support a criminal prosecution.”

The news comes the same week that the accuser’s attorney, Yoel Zehaie, filed a motion to dismiss Prescott’s lawsuit against the accuser. Prescott is seeking $1 million in response to what his attorney’s claim was an extortion attempt on the woman’s behalf. They maintain that the woman asked for $100 million to drop the sexual assault allegation.

The women’s attorney also filed a countersuit in civil court.

McCathern said in a statement on Thursday, “We are confident that at the end of law enforcement’s investigation into the extortion case that they will find the accuser and her attorneys just as guilty as Dak is innocent.

“As I have said from the beginning, Dak is a great football player, and an even better human. He would never assault any woman. These false accusations were brought up 7 years after the alleged events for one reason and one reason only — to line the pockets of the accuser and her attorneys. Their behavior is an affront to all the true survivors of sexual assault.”

Zehaie told WFAA-TV in Dallas this week that Prescott’s lawsuit “was meant to silence his sexual assault victim” and “is in violation of Texas’s Anti Slapp Statute which prohibits different forms of retaliatory lawsuits.”

Zehaie added in a statement on Thursday, according to ESPN, “We are proceeding with our counterclaims, even though Levi McCathern is using every tactic to prevent us from going to court.”

Dak Prescott addresses contract talks, lawsuit

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott addressed his contract situation, the notion of playing for another team as well as the lawsuit he filed regarding an alleged extortion claim in comments made at a charity event.

“I’m not going to say I fear being here or not. I don’t fear either situation, to be candid with you,” Prescott said Friday from the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala, per The Athletic. “I love this game and love to play and love to better myself as a player and my teammates around me. Right now it’s with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s where I want to be, and that’s where I am, and that’s the focus. And after the season we’ll see where we’re at and if the future holds that. And if not, we’ll go from there.”

Prescott, 30, is entering his ninth season and the final campaign of a four-year, $160 million contract he signed in 2021. He holds a no-trade clause and a no franchise-tag agreement.

Prescott’s salary-cap figure in 2024 is $55.45 million, which is the second-highest in the NFL behind Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson ($63.77 million).

Prescott said his primary interest isn’t eclipsing Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow as the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback. Burrow’s average salary is $55 million a year, while Prescott currently pockets $40 million. Prescott ranks No. 10 in pay on the quarterbacks list.

“No, I’m not trying to be the highest paid necessarily,” Prescott said. “We’ll wait until the negotiations begin and obviously want to put this team in the best situation.”

Prescott also was asked about the lawsuit he filed regarding an alleged extortion claim made by a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by him in 2017.

“I know the truth,” he said. “I’m confident in what we filed. Very confident in what we filed. I know some things have changed in their sense in where they filed, but that doesn’t have any weighing on what we’re doing and how we’re going about our lawsuit.”

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott accused of sexual assault after filing extortion suit

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault in 2017 related to the extortion lawsuit he filed on Monday that claims the woman demanded money to remain quiet about the allegation.

The woman filed a criminal complaint Tuesday and Dallas police are investigating her claim that Prescott sexually assaulted her in the back of an SUV in the parking lot of a strip club, XTC Cabaret, on Feb. 2, 2017. Attorneys representing the accuser claim Prescott’s representatives acknowledge they were together on the night of the alleged incident.

Prescott’s lawsuit, which was filed in Collin County, lists the female accuser and her attorneys. Prescott claims they demanded $100 million for her silence in a letter he received in January.

The Dallas Police Department is investigating claims of sexual assault, and authorities in Prosper, Texas, began an extortion investigation one day before the alleged victim reported the alleged sexual assault.

“Mr. Prescott, a new father to a baby girl, has great empathy for survivors of sexual assault,” attorney Levi McCathern, who is representing Prescott, said in a statement to ESPN. “He fervently believes that all perpetrators of such crimes should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. To be clear, Mr. Prescott has never engaged in any nonconsensual sexual conduct with anyone. Lies hurt. Especially malicious lies. We will not allow the defendant and her legal team to profit from this attempt to extort millions from Mr. Prescott.”

Prescott, 30, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.

He’s now entering his ninth season and the final season of a four-year, $160 million contract he signed in 2021. Prescott’s salary-cap figure in 2024 is $59.5 million and the Cowboys reportedly have held preliminary discussions regarding a long-term extension.

Nine quarterbacks have signed contracts with higher total values since Prescott and the Cowboys completed their existing agreement.

Report: Dak Prescott, Cowboys to work out long-term extension in offseason

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are expected to work out a long-term contract extension in the offseason, making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, NFL Network reported Sunday.

Prescott will hold a $59.455 million salary-cap hit in 2024, which represents the final season of the four-year, $160 million contract extension he signed in 2021.

Prescott also is due a $5 million roster bonus by the fifth day of the new league year.

Prescott followed up being named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for November by completing 29 of 41 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns in Dallas’ 41-35 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday.

“I understand nobody’s opinion defines me, that’s the great part about life and that’s the great opportunity that we all have, that people can say whatever they want, but you know I have the pen, I have the paper and I’m the one writing,” Prescott told reporters on Thursday night. “So, because I’m playing as well as I am now doesn’t mean I’m going to stop, doesn’t mean I’m going to listen to them now.”

Prescott, 30, is completing a career-best 70.1 percent of his passes this season. He has thrown for 3,234 yards with a league-leading 26 touchdowns and six interceptions in 12 games.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Prescott owns a 70-39 record in 109 career starts since being picked by Dallas in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has thrown for 28,177 yards with 192 touchdowns and 71 interceptions.

Cowboys coach: Dak Prescott to work on ‘rhythm and timing’

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott appears to be in prime position to return to action this weekend against the visiting Detroit Lions.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Prescott would be “in the lead chair as far as reps” on Thursday. Prescott, and his surgically repaired right thumb, were no worse for wear after he threw 40 passes during a reduced practice session on Wednesday.

Prescott received full clearance to return from his thumb injury this week. He is bidding to make his first start since sustaining the injury in Dallas’ 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 11.

McCarthy on Thursday also noted that Prescott has two obstacles in his return from a lengthy absence.

“Rhythm and timing,” McCarthy said. “That’s the biggest thing, and it’s a challenge to grab that in this short a period of time. There’s no question, but really putting a ceiling on the workload is important, because Lord knows he’d throw a 140 (passes on Wednesday) if you let him.”

With Prescott sidelined, Cooper Rush led the Cowboys to four straight victories before throwing three interceptions in a 26-17 loss to the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

In 2021, Prescott completed a career-high 68.8 percent of his passes and threw for 4,449 yards and a team-record 37 touchdowns.
