Reports: Nebraska adds veteran coach Dana Holgorsen as consultant

Nebraska is bringing in veteran college coach Dana Holgorsen as a consultant, hoping he can help the Cornhuskers put some points on the scoreboard.

Behind freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola, the Huskers are averaging 23.6 points — tied for 100th in the nation — per game. The offense is 99th nationally in yards gained with an average of 354.1.

Holgorsen, 53, was fired from Houston last November after a 31-28 record in five seasons. He previously was the head coach at West Virginia (2011-18) and posted a 61-41 record.

Earlier this season, Holgorsen served in a scout and consultant role for TCU. He reportedly will remain with Nebraska through the end of the season but could be in line for a job on the Nebraska staff in 2025.

The Huskers (5-4, 2-4 Big Ten) have put up an average of 18.3 points per game in conference play and have lost three in a row.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said he was going to add “outside people” to his circle as the team flounders down the stretch.

“Eighteen points a game. It’s not good enough,” Rhule said Monday.

The Huskers have a bye this week, then will face Southern California in Los Angeles on Nov. 16 and close the season with traditional Big Ten rivals Wisconsin (Nov. 23) and Iowa (Nov. 29).

Reports: Houston dismisses head coach Dana Holgorsen

Houston parted ways with Dana Holgorsen after five seasons as its head coach, multiple media outlets reported on Sunday.

The reported move comes one day after the Cougars dropped a 27-13 decision to UCF in Orlando, Fla. Houston finished with a 4-8 record overall and 2-7 conference mark in their Big 12 debut season.

The Houston Chronicle reported UTSA’s Jeff Traylor, Tulane coach Willie Fritz, former TCU coach Gary Patterson, and former Texas Tech and Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury are among the candidates to replace Holgorsen.

Holgorsen has posted a 12-13 record since the Cougars appeared in the American Athletic Conference championship game in 2021. Overall, he owns a 31-28 mark during his time with Houston and a 61-41 record during his eight previous seasons with West Virginia.

Holgorsen will be owed close to $14.5 million by the school on a contract that was extended after the AAC championship game. He is owed $4.4 million in 2024, $4.5 million in 2025, $2.76 million in 2026 and $2.82 million in 2027, per the Chronicle.

Dana Holgorsen, Houston agree to extension through 2027

Head football coach Dana Holgorsen and Houston agreed to a contract extension through the 2027 season.

The school announced the six-year extension on Thursday but didn’t reveal contract terms.

According to the USA Today coaches salary database, Holgorsen earned $4 million in 2021.

“We’re excited about where we are and the direction we’re headed,” said Chris Pezman, the school’s vice president of athletics, in a news release. “Getting Dana locked up for six years ahead of our conference transition was important for continuity. We look forward to our future with Dana at the helm.”

Houston is preparing to move to the Big 12 in either 2023 or ’24, leaving the American Athletic Conference.

Holgorsen, 50, guided the Cougars to a 12-2 record in 2021 that included a victory against Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl. Houston was one of six teams nationally ranked in the top 20 in both points per game (35.9) and opponent points per game (20.4).

He has a 19-15 record (13-10 AAC) in three seasons at Houston. He previously coached West Virginia (2011-18) to a 61-41 overall record.

“This is a long-term commitment,” Holgorsen said. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be at the University of Houston for the foreseeable future.”

Report: Houston coach Dana Holgorsen agrees to extension

Houston and head coach Dana Holgorsen have verbally agreed on a multi-year contract extension, The Athletic reported Saturday.

Holgorsen, 50, guided the Cougars to a 12-2 record in 2021 that included a victory against Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl.

Contract details are still being finalized, per the report. Under the terms of his original deal signed in 2019, Holgorsen was due to make $4.2 million in 2022 and $4.3 million in 2023.

The original contract also contained a clause that required the school and Holgorsen to negotiate a raise should Houston be invited to join a Power 5 conference during his tenure. In September, Houston accepted an invitation to join the Big 12, a move that could happen as early as 2023.

Holgorsen is 19-15 in three seasons at Houston after compiling a 61-41 record in eight seasons at West Virginia (2011-18).
