CB Darius Slay out, WR DeVonta Smith questionable for Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay has been ruled out for Sunday’s visit to Baltimore, and wide receiver DeVonta Smith is listed as questionable.

Slay did not practice this week while in the NFL’s concussion protocol after leaving the Eagles’ 37-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday with a head injury.

Smith, meanwhile, did not participate in Wednesday’s practice and was limited Thursday and Friday while dealing with a hamstring injury. He did not practice at all last week and missed Sunday’s matchup vs. the Rams, his second absence this season after missing the Eagles’ Week 4 loss at Tampa Bay due to a concussion.

Philadelphia also ruled out linebacker/fullback Ben VanSumeren (knee) and listed wide receiver Johnny Wilson (hamstring) as questionable for Sunday after he missed practice on Friday.

Smith, 26, leads the Eagles with 41 receptions and four touchdown catches ands ranks second with 516 receiving yards in nine starts this season.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has 281 catches for 3,694 yards and 23 scores in 59 games (58 starts) since the Eagles drafted him with the 10th overall pick in 2021 out of Alabama.

Slay, 33, has played in 10 games this season despite dealing with a knee injury in Week 6 and a groin injury in Week 8.

In 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions (2013-19) and Eagles (2020-24), Slay has totaled 28 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns), 155 pass breakups and 602 tackles in 173 career games (163 starts). He has been selected to six Pro Bowl games and was a 2017 All-Pro first-team honoree.

NFC East-leading Philadelphia (9-2) takes a seven-game winning streak to Baltimore (8-4).

Eagles CB Darius Slay (groin) leaves game vs. Bengals

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay left Sunday’s 37-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals with a groin injury.

Slay, 33, was injured during the Eagles’ first defensive drive of the second half. He attempted to stay in the game after being hurt on an incomplete pass, but soon limped off the field.

Slay made four tackles and a pass breakup before his exit. Philadelphia did not have an immediate update on his condition after the game.

He was already playing hurt, having left the Eagles’ Week 6 win over the Cleveland Browns with a knee injury. After missing some practice time, he was able to play last week when the Eagles beat the New York Giants.

In 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions (2013-19) and Eagles (2020-24), Slay has totaled 28 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns), 152 pass breakups and 597 tackles in 170 career games (160 starts). He has been selected to six Pro Bowl games and was a 2017 All-Pro first-team honoree.

Eagles place LT Jordan Mailata on injured reserve

The Philadelphia Eagles placed left tackle Jordan Mailata on injured reserve Friday.

Mailata, who will miss the team’s next four games, joined tight end Dallas Goedert and defensive tackle Byron Young as ruled out for the Eagles’ contest against the New York Giants on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. All three players are nursing hamstring injuries.

Darius Slay (knee) joined fellow cornerback Eli Ricks (groin) as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Fred Johnson is expected to start in place of Mailata, who was injured in Philadelphia’s 20-16 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Johnson played the final 13 offensive snaps of that game in Mailata’s place.

Mailata, 27, has started all five games this season and 62 of his 67 career contests since Philadelphia selected the former Australian rugby player in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Goedert, 29, has 24 catches for 301 yards in five games this season.

Tight end Grant Calcaterra, who had four catches for 67 yards versus the Browns, is expected to replace Goedert in the starting lineup Sunday.

Eagles CB Darius Slay apologizes for Brazil comment

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay apologized over social media for his comments he made last week about the team’s season-opening game in Brazil.

“I want to apologize to anyone I offended, that wasn’t my intention,” Slay posted to X on Tuesday, just ahead of the Eagles’ 10-hour flight from Philadelphia to Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Eagles are opening their season against the Green Bay Packers on Friday night in the Brazilian city.

“I’m Looking forward to playing in your beautiful country and i’ve heard yall are very passionate just like our amazing Eagles (fans). Just a few more days, can’t wait!!!!”

That post was in stark contrast to what the six-time Pro Bowl selection said about Brazil last week on his “Big Play Slay” podcast. Slay, 33, cited worries about the country’s crime rate and told his family not to join the team.

“Man, I do not want to go to Brazil,” Slay said at the time. “They already told us not to leave the hotel. … NFL, why do y’all want to send us somewhere where the crime rate is this high?”

Eagles CB Darius Slay out after knee surgery

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this week and will not play in the team’s upcoming game, coach Nick Sirianni announced Saturday.

Slay will not be available for the Eagles’ (10-3) matchup on Monday night against the host Seattle Seahawks (6-7) but is expected to return by the end of the regular season, according to multiple reports.

Slay, 32, has been dealing with a knee injury throughout the season, forcing him to miss the Eagles’ 20-14 loss to the New York Jets in Week 6. He reportedly practiced only once in the past two weeks.

Slay has 57 tackles and two interceptions in 12 starts this year. The five-time Pro Bowl selection has 28 interceptions in 163 games (153 starts) with Detroit (2013-19) and Philadelphia.

Eagles CB Darius Slay, DT Jalen Carter iffy for Sunday

The Philadelphia Eagles could be without two key defensive starters Sunday against the host New York Jets.

Cornerback Darius Slay is dealing with a knee injury and rookie defensive tackle Jalen Carter reportedly sprained an ankle during practice this week.

“If he does have to miss this week, we don’t anticipate it being a long-term thing,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said about Slay on Friday.

ESPN reported the injury to Carter, adding that the first-round pick’s status for Sunday’s contest is “in question.”

Slay has not practiced this week and Carter missed Thursday’s session as the Eagles (5-0) prepared to face the Jets (2-3).

Slay, 32, has 25 tackles and one interception (a 70-yard pick-six in Week 1 at New England) in five starts this year. The five-time Pro Bowl selection has 27 interceptions in 156 games (146 starts) with Detroit (2013-19) and Philly.

Carter, 22, has registered 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in five games. He was the ninth overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Georgia.

Eagles CB Darius Slay was ‘this close’ to joining Ravens

Philadelphia cornerback Darius Slay said he nearly joined the Baltimore Ravens before re-signing with the Eagles last month.

“I was almost … a Baltimore Raven. I was this close,” he revealed Saturday on his “Big Play Slay” podcast. “But I wanted to be an Eagle. I stayed an Eagle because I know me and (general manager) Howie (Roseman) were going to figure something out.

“But the Baltimore Ravens were the first team that called, and they offered me just what I wanted.”

Despite previous reports that the Eagles were planning to release him, Slay ultimately agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract extension with Philadelphia that includes $24.5 million in guarantees, according to Spotrac.

Slay, 32, started all 17 games in 2022 and registered 14 pass breakups and three interceptions for a unit that led the league in pass defense (179.8 yards per game).

He added 12 tackles in the postseason for the NFC champs, who lost 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

Slay has 26 interceptions and 513 tackles in 151 games (141 starts) with the Detroit Lions (2013-19) and Eagles. He is a five-time Pro Bowl selection, including in two of his three seasons in Philadelphia.

Reports: Darius Slay stays with Eagles, signs contract extension

Despite previous reports that the Philadelphia Eagles were set to release him, cornerback Darius Slay agreed to a $42 million contract extension that includes $23 million fully guaranteed, multiple reports said Thursday.

Slay had been scheduled to enter the last year of a three-year, $50 million deal signed in March 2020. With the new two-year extension, Slay is reportedly now under contract with the Eagles through 2025.

The agreement comes in the wake of mixed messages regarding Slay’s future with the Eagles. The Eagles had failed in attempts to find a trade partner for Slay and last week had given Slay’s agent Drew Rosenhaus permission to seek a trade while still negotiating a possible extension.

Late Wednesday night, Slay hinted at the future when he tweeted, “Back like I never left!!! Run it back,” followed by an eagle emoji.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Slay’s new contract doesn’t contain any new money agreements, which should help clear up cap space for the Eagles.

He is a five-time Pro Bowler, including in two of his three seasons in Philadelphia.

Reports: Eagles releasing CB Darius Slay

The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

The move is unsurprising and comes after failed attempts to find a trade partner for Slay, who earned Pro Bowl honors in two of his three seasons in Philadelphia. The Eagles gave Slay’s agent permission to seek a trade last week.

Further, the Eagles brought back All-Pro CB James Bradberry on a three-year deal worth $38 million on Tuesday, including $20 million guaranteed.

Slay, 32, was set to enter the final season of a three-year, $50 million deal signed in March 2020. He was due a base salary of $17 million with a cap hit of $26.1 million in 2023, according to Spotrac.

Slay started all 17 games in 2022 and registered 14 passes defensed and three interceptions for a unit that led the league in pass defense (179.8 yards per game).

Report: Eagles allow CB Darius Slay to seek trade

The Philadelphia Eagles are allowing veteran cornerback Darius Slay’s agent to seek a trade, ESPN reported Friday.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection did not request a trade and the team hopes to keep him in Philly, per the report.

Slay, 32, is entering the final season of a three-year, $50 million deal signed in March 2020.

He is due a base salary of $17 million with a cap hit of $26.1 million in 2023, according to Spotrac.

Slay started all 17 games in 2022 and registered 14 passes defensed and three interceptions for a unit that led the league in pass defense (179.8 yards per game).

He added 12 tackles in the postseason for the NFC champs, who lost 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

Slay, who is represented by Drew Rosenhaus, recently discussed his contract situation and his desire to remain in Philadelphia on the “Montgomery & Co.” podcast.

“Of course I want an extension with the Eagles. I love the Eagles. They took another chance on me trading for me, and I panned out very well of course. But yeah, I love that money, so of course I’m going to be talking about it this offseason,” Slay said. “That’s everyone, that’s what we all do when we’ve got one year left on our deal. We try to get the extension because it makes the cap low and then you get to start building around the team because once you’re cap’s too high, you can’t add more players.

“So with me, with my cap that high, I’m sure they probably want to get it down, and the best way to get it down is to give me some money.”

Slay has 26 interceptions and 513 tackles in 151 games (141 starts) with the Detroit Lions (2013-19) and Eagles.
