Report: 49ers WR Deebo Samuel ’50-50′ to face Lions

The San Francisco 49ers believe star receiver Deebo Samuel has a “50-50” shot to play in Sunday’s NFC title game against the Detroit Lions, ESPN reported Monday.

Samuel sustained an injury to his left shoulder in the first half of Saturday’s divisional round win against the Green Bay Packers and did not play in the second half. He caught two passes for 24 yards in the 24-21 victory.

Samuel, 28, caught 60 passes for 892 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 225 yards and five scores in 15 games during the 2023 regular season. He missed Weeks 7 and 8 with a shoulder injury.

He reportedly underwent medical testing on Sunday but the team had not announced the results as of Monday morning.

49ers’ Deebo Samuel out 2 games; Christian McCaffrey questionable

San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Deebo Samuel will miss the next two games, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, after he was diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his shoulder.

Samuel, who was injured in last Sunday’s 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, won’t play in Monday night’s game at the Minnesota Vikings (2-4) or next Sunday’s matchup with the visiting Cincinnati Bengals. The 49ers (5-1) are on a bye in Week 9, so the earliest Samuel will return to the lineup is Week 10 at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“It’s always different (without Samuel),” Shanahan said. “What we did last week, we weren’t sure of him throughout the week, so we had contingency plans. He’s been banged up a few weeks before that, too, so this will give him a chance to settle down and, hopefully, come back 100 percent (out of the bye).”

Star running back Christian McCaffrey, who is nursing an oblique injury suffered in last Sunday’s game, is questionable after returning to the practice field in a limited capacity Saturday after not practicing Thursday or Friday. McCaffrey tied an NFL record last Sunday with a touchdown in his 15th straight game before exiting with the injury.

If McCaffrey doesn’t play, Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason could share running back duties.

All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) is doubtful after he played through an injury in last Sunday’s loss to the Browns. The 10-time Pro Bowl selection hasn’t played a full season since 2013.

Starting linebacker Dre Greenlaw (hamstring) is questionable for Monday’s game.

49ers’ Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel day-to-day

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and left tackle Trent Williams are day-to-day after not participating in Thursday’s practice.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that McCaffrey, who was injured in Sunday’s 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, is only dealing with an oblique issue, as the rib injury is no longer a concern.

Regarding McCaffrey’s MRI, Shanahan was asked by reporters if the result was encouraging.

“I thought it was,” Shanahan said. “Anyone who’s day-to-day, it means they’ve got a chance.”

Along with McCaffrey, Samuel (shoulder) and Williams (ankle), linebacker Dre Greenlaw (hamstring) and guard Aaron Banks (ankle) did not take part in Thursday’s practice.

Preparing for Monday night’s road game against the Minnesota Vikings (2-4), the 49ers (5-1) will also practice Friday and Saturday.

49ers say Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams day-to-day

While the San Francisco 49ers await further imaging for star running back Christian McCaffrey, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday that wide receiver Deebo Samuel and left tackle Trent Williams avoided major injuries and are day-to-day.

McCaffrey (oblique/rib), Samuel (shoulder) and Williams (ankle) all came away with injuries in Sunday’s 19-17 road loss to the Cleveland Browns — San Francisco’s first defeat of the season.

Williams’ ankle injury is not a high ankle sprain, Shanahan said. Samuel was hit on the shoulder while running a jet sweep on the Niners’ first play from scrimmage.

McCaffrey’s injury, however, may not be something he can play through with protection.

“It’s obviously a tougher position just because you get hit a lot more,” Shanahan said. “But we’ve just got to see how it reacts. We’ve got to see exactly what’s wrong with it too because we haven’t got that back yet. We say oblique/rib, hopefully it’s not both, but we’ve got to wait to see for sure.”

McCaffrey leads the NFL in rushing with 553 yards despite being held to 43 yards on 11 carries before exiting the Browns game. He also has nine touchdowns (seven rushing, two receiving) through six games.

All three players will get an extra day to rest and recover as the 49ers (5-1) prepare for next Monday night’s matchup at the Minnesota Vikings (2-4).

49ers WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder) questionable to return

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel exited Sunday’s game against the host Cleveland Browns due to a shoulder injury and is questionable to return.

Samuel played San Francisco’s first two series, but he was then taken to the medical tent before heading back to the locker room.

Prior to exiting, Samuel was targeted once without a catch. He added a pair of carries for 11 yards.

Samuel, 27, entered Sunday with 20 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown through five games this season. He also had 84 rushing yards and a score.

49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk returns to practice; Deebo Samuel sits out

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was back at practice on Monday after being inactive for the 49ers’ home victory over the New York Giants last Thursday night, but fellow star wide receiver Deebo Samuel did not practice.

Aiyuk suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 on his first catch against the Los Angeles Rams. He finished with 43 yards in a 30-23 road victory.

In Week 1, Aiyuk caught eight passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns at Pittsburgh in the 49ers’ 30-7 victory.

Aiyuk, 25, was a first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Arizona State.

Samuel (ribs) was held out of Monday’s on-field workouts after playing a big role in the win over the Giants.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday the minor injury wasn’t expected to keep Samuel out too long.

“(He’s) pretty sore, so it’ll be day-to-day,” Shanahan said.

Samuel was hurt in the fourth quarter following a 19-yard reception.

“I actually fell on the ball and I thought it was my ribs,” Samuel said after the game. “I think the wind got knocked out of me. But after going in the tent, everything checked out fine and I was good.”

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, listed day-to-day with an ankle injury, did not practice on Monday.

The 49ers (3-0) host the Arizona Cardinals (1-2) Sunday.

49ers expect Deebo Samuel back in ‘three-ish’ weeks

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that he expects injured star wideout Deebo Samuel to return in “three-ish” weeks.

An MRI exam on Monday revealed that Samuel sustained a sprained left ankle and a sprained MCL in his knee during Sunday’s game. Early reports said Samuel would be sidelined until the playoffs. The Niners have four regular-season games remaining.

Meanwhile, new QB1 Brock Purdy practiced Tuesday in a limited fashion, his rib/oblique injury more of a pain tolerance issue.

“I feel good,” Purdy said Tuesday, noting that he was sore Monday.

“It wasn’t excruciating pain or anything like that,” he said.

Shanahan said Purdy “won’t be able to make it worse” if he plays Thursday night against Seattle.

Samuel was injured Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and left the game after his leg bent awkwardly underneath him while being tackled on a 3-yard run, a play that finished with Tampa Bay recovering his fumble. Samuel attempted to get off the field under his own power before needing the assistance of a cart.

An emotional Samuel was in tears as he was taken from the field, and the team initially announced the injury was to his knee.

Samuel, 26, had four carries for 21 yards and a touchdown and four catches for 43 yards before leaving the game.

For the season, Samuel has 54 receptions for 612 yards and two touchdowns and has rushed for 228 yards and three scores.

Report: 49ers without WR Deebo Samuel until playoffs

San Francisco 49ers hybrid wide receiver Deebo Samuel could be out until the playoffs with a high ankle sprain.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers would have more information after Samuel had an MRI exam on the injured left ankle. Recovery for high ankle injuries is typically 4-6 weeks.

NFL Network reported Monday that the 49ers were planning to be without Samuel until the playoffs.

Reports: 49ers extend WR Deebo Samuel

The San Francisco 49ers are giving wide receiver Deebo Samuel a three-year, $71.55 million contract extension, ESPN and NFL Network reported Sunday.

He will be guaranteed $58.1 million, and the deal could be worth up to $73.5 million, per the reports.

Samuel, 26, hauled in 77 receptions for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns last season in 16 games (15 starts). He was also vital to the rushing game, adding 365 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

The former second-round pick has spent his entire career with San Francisco, where he has recorded 167 receptions for 2,598 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns. He made his first Pro Bowl appearance last season, was named first-team All-Pro and led the league in yards per reception (18.2).

Samuel reported to the 49ers’ training camp but was “holding in” and not practicing while contract negotiations were ongoing. He had requested a trade out of San Francisco last April.

Niners WR Deebo Samuel expected at minicamp

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to take part in the team’s mandatory minicamp that begins Tuesday, ESPN and NFL Network reported.

Samuel skipped the 49ers’ voluntary organized team activities after asking to be traded.

Defensive end Nick Bosa, who also skipped OTAs, is expected at minicamp as well. Bosa, entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, is an extension candidate.

Samuel, 26, recently requested a trade from San Francisco on the heels of his breakout season. He is heading into the last year of his $7.24 million rookie deal and is due to make $3.99 million this year with a salary-cap hit of $4.89 million, according to Spotrac.

Samuel made first-team All-Pro last season after proving to be effective as both a ball carrier and a pass catcher. He made 77 receptions for 1,405 yards (league-leading 18.2 yards per catch) and six touchdowns, and he added 59 carries for 365 yards and eight touchdowns.

In three postseason games in the 2021 season, Samuel added 10 catches for 154 yards and a TD plus 27 carries for 137 yards and a score.

The 49ers selected Samuel in the second round of the 2019 draft out of South Carolina.
