Texans rule out Laremy Tunsil vs. Jags, put Derek Stingley Jr. on IR

The Houston Texans ruled out left tackle Laremy Tunsil for Sunday’s game against the host Jacksonville Jaguars and placed cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. on injured reserve.

The Texans announced Saturday that Tunsil would not travel to Jacksonville with the team.

Signed to a three-year, $75 million contract in March, Tunsil has started one game this season for Houston.

Tunsil, 29, earned his third Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and started all 17 games. He has 95 starts in seven seasons with the Texans and the Miami Dolphins (2016-18), who drafted him 13th overall in 2016.

Stingley, who sustained a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s practice, will miss the team’s next four games.

Stingley, 22, has made nine tackles and allowed four catches for 37 yards and no touchdowns on six targets this season.

The 2022 first-round pick (third overall) made nine starts as a rookie and posted 43 tackles, one interception and one sack without giving up a touchdown. He sustained a season-ending leg injury in Week 10.

Also on Saturday, the Texans signed safety DeAndre Houston-Carson to the active roster from the practice squad. Houston also elevated defensive tackle Khalil Davis and offensive tackle Austin Deculus from the practice squad.

CB Derek Stingley Jr. (foot) out indefinitely for LSU

All-America cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. will be sidelined indefinitely for LSU following a medical procedure on his left foot.

Coach Ed Orgeron on Wednesday had no timetable for Stingley’s return.

Stingley has been dealing with the foot injury since the summer. He played in the first three games but missed the past two games for the Tigers (3-2).

Pro Football Focus lists Stingley, a junior, as the No. 1 cornerback prospect in the 2022 NFL Draft. Coming out of high school in Baton Rouge, he was listed as the No. 3 player in the nation by the 247Sports composite

“I appreciate all of the support from LSU and the fans,” Stingley said in a statement. “I’m doing all that I can to return to the field as soon as possible. I want to finish out the season with my teammates and I will do everything I can to get healthy so that I will be able to play again this year.”

As a freshman in 2019, he earned consensus All-America honors. In 2020, he was named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association for the second straight year.

In 25 games with the Tigers, Stingley has made 73 tackles (six for loss) and added 26 passes defensed, six interceptions and two forced fumbles.

LSU expects CB Stingley to return vs. Vanderbilt

LSU All-American cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. returned to practice and is expected to play this weekend after missing the Tigers’ season-opening loss against Mississippi State with a mystery illness.

LSU missed Stingley, whose illness was not COVID related, in a 44-34 upset loss to the Bulldogs on Saturday, but hopes to welcome him this week against Vanderbilt.

“A huge lift for us,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday of Stingley’s potential return. “Derek’s one of our best players. … He’s a force and he’s a difference.”

Stingley’s father, Derek, told a radio station Tuesday that his son “had a reaction to something” and was doing better after the scare.

“It was scary,” Derek Stingley Sr. said. “But it wasn’t as bad as we thought it was when we first got the call and all that. But he’s good to go. I’m pretty sure they’re going to probably take it easy with him this week. But I’m pretty sure he may wind up playing as well.”

As a freshman in 2019, Stingley started all 15 games during LSU’s national championship season. He led the Southeastern Conference and ranked No. 5 in the nation in interceptions (six) and No. 2 nationally in passes defended (21).

Derek Stingley Sr. played baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies’ system before spending nine seasons in the Arena Football League. His father, the late Darryl Stingley, was a wide receiver and first-round draft pick of the New England Patriots in 1973. He was paralyzed in a preseason game in 1978 against the Oakland Raiders.
