Detroit Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes (55) pressures Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) during the first half at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs improve to .500 by downing Lions

Patrick Mahomes passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score as host Kansas City snapped Detroit’s four-game winning streak with a 30-17 win on Sunday night.

Hollywood Brown caught four passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Travis Kelce had six receptions for 78 yards for the Chiefs (3-3).

Jared Goff passed for 203 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions (4-2).

Detroit wide receiver Jameson Williams caught six passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, while tight end Sam LaPorta contributed five receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. Jahmyr Gibbs gained 65 yards on 17 carries.

Kansas City held a 13-10 halftime advantage.

The Lions got a little too fancy after a long opening drive. On fourth-and-goal from the 1, running back David Montgomery threw an apparent touchdown pass to Goff. The officials called an illegal motion penalty to wipe it out. Detroit settled for Jake Bates’ 28-yard field goal.

Kansas City responded with a touchdown on its first drive, a 6-yard pass from Mahomes to Xavier Worthy on fourth-and-3. Harrison Butker missed the extra point.

Detroit drove 71 yards in six plays during the ensuing possession, capped by Goff’s 22-yard scoring pass to Williams.

After both the Chiefs and Lions turned the ball over on downs, Kansas City regained the lead with 37 seconds left in the first half. Mahomes scored on a 1-yard run just after a 17-yard completion to Kelce.

The Chiefs drove 81 yards after the third-quarter kickoff and scored on a 9-yard flip to Brown. Kansas City had four plays of at least 11 yards during the possession, which forged a 20-10 lead.

The Lions made it a three-point game with an 81-yard scoring drive. Montgomery caught two passes for 37 yards and Amon-Ra St. Brown had four receptions before Goff found LaPorta over the middle on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 14:14 left in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes then led his club on a 69-yard drive, culminating in a 3-yard scoring pass to Brown with 9:30 remaining in the fourth. The drive was aided by a roughing-the-passer penalty against Lions star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.

Butker kicked a 33-yard field goal with 2:26 left in regulation.

David Montgomery fuels Lions’ big win over Bengals

CINCINNATI — David Montgomery tossed a touchdown pass and ran for another in his return to his hometown as the Detroit Lions hung on to beat the Bengals 37-24 Sunday before a disgruntled Cincinnati crowd.

The Lions (4-1) were rolling to their fourth straight blowout win before the Bengals made it close with Jake Browning’s three fourth-quarter touchdown passes. Two went to Ja’Marr Chase, who finished with six catches and 110 yards; he also made three tackles on the day, bringing down the defender after all three Browning interceptions.

The Lions have scored at least 30 points in all four wins. The Bengals (2-3) lost their third straight without Joe Burrow.

Montgomery, a running back, grew up in the Cincinnati area and was a star high school quarterback. He threw a 3-yard option pass to tight end Brock Wright in the second quarter and ran 8 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff completed 19 of 23 passes on the day for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Goff completed his first eight passes for 103 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown toss to tight end Sam LaPorta to cap off a seven-play, 58-yard opening drive.

Browning made his third straight start for the injured Burrow, and it was his ugliest. He threw three interceptions in the first two-plus quarters, though he finished the game 26-for-40 for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Derrick Barnes brought Browning down in the end zone with 1:49 left for the game’s final two points.

Browning and the Bengals’ offense was booed loudly from the start of the game through halftime. For a third straight game, the Bengals could only muster three points in the first half, and they’ve been outscored 69-9 in the first halves of the last three games.

Browning found Chase for a 15-yard touchdown pass nine seconds into the fourth quarter. Chase’s toe-tap on the right side of the end zone ended a drought of 20 possessions without a touchdown for the Bengals, dating back to the fourth quarter on Sept. 21 in Minnesota.

On Cincinnati’s next possession, facing third-and-14 from their own 36, Browning found Chase, who beat corner Amik Robertson down the left sideline for a 64-yard score.

The Lions put the game away with a 12-yard pass from Goff to Isaac TeSlaa with 5:14 left. Tee Higgins hauled in Cincinnati’s final garbage-time TD.

Ravens’ Lamar Jackson hopes to continue Monday dominance vs. Lions

The evidence displays that the worst time to play against Lamar Jackson is on a Monday night.

The Ravens’ starting quarterback has dazzled on Monday nights throughout his career and he looks to continue his excellence when Baltimore hosts the Detroit Lions on that stage in Week 3.

Jackson has 22 passing touchdowns without being intercepted in nine Monday night appearances. He has twice thrown five touchdown passes and also had four touchdowns through the air when he set the franchise record of 442 passing yards against the Indianapolis Colts in a 31-25 overtime victory in 2021.

He also has accumulated 644 rushing yards and three scores.

“I’ll say that probably the extra rest day, extra film, get a good feel for who we’re playing against and go from there,” Jackson told reporters Thursday of the success.

The Ravens (1-1) lead the NFL in scoring average (40.5) and have reached the 40-point mark in both of their games.

They face another high-scoring team in the Lions (1-1). Detroit ranks third in scoring (32.5) and is coming off a 52-21 whipping of the Chicago Bears in Week 2.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff matched his career best of five passing touchdowns while hitting 23 of 28 throws for 334 yards. Goff has six touchdown passes and one interception this season.

Detroit wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown has caught 13 passes for 160 yards and is tied for the NFL lead with three touchdown receptions.

“I feel like we were a lot better than we were (in week 1) from everything,” St. Brown said. “From the explosive plays, to the communication, to the details, the execution, to taking care of the football. Just the whole top to bottom. …

“But, anytime you put up 50 in this league is tough against any opponent.”

The showing was needed after Detroit struggled in Week 1 while falling 27-13 to the host Green Bay Packers.

Naturally, Goff liked seeing his team quadruple its point total.

“Felt like we were completing a lot of balls and getting down the field with a lot of explosives and the whole thing,” Goff said. “It really starts upfront. Those guys pass protect like that, it’s going to be tough to stop us. This Monday night, we’d like to throw it like that again.”

Baltimore scored 40 points in its season-opening loss to Buffalo, a game in which the Bills scored 16 points in the final four minutes to pull off the 41-40 win. Last week, the Ravens pounded the Cleveland Browns 41-17.

Jackson has six passing touchdowns and one rushing score through two games. He hasn’t been intercepted.

Despite the easy victory against the Browns, Baltimore rushed for just 45 yards. Derrick Henry had just 23 yards on 11 carries after rumbling for 169 yards and two scores on 18 carries against the Bills.

“They had a bunch of guys at the line of scrimmage, and they were triggering the run right away,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “When you get a run key, you’re hitting gaps, running through gaps. I would say they were blitzing the run. It wasn’t a blitz call, but it’s a blitz reaction to the run.”

Baltimore could have tight end Isaiah Likely (foot) for the first time this season. Likely, who broke his left foot early in training camp and later underwent surgery, was a limited practice participant on Thursday.

Standout outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy (hamstring) is expected to miss multiple games after being injured against the Browns. Star cornerback Marlon Humphrey (groin) was also injured against Cleveland but was a full practice participant.

In addition to Van Noy, fullback Patrick Ricard (calf), defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike (neck) and cornerback Nate Wiggins (groin) also missed practice.

For Detroit, standout tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder) missed practice, as did linebacker Jack Campbell (ankle) and edge rusher Marcus Davenport (chest). Corner D.J. Reed (knee) and safety Kerby Joseph (knee) were limited.

Baltimore has beaten the Lions five straight times and six of seven overall.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams (1) practices during training camp at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Reports: Lions WR Jameson Williams agrees to 3-year, $83M extension

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams will open the season with a three-year contract extension worth up to $83 million after reaching agreement Saturday, according to multiple media reports.

The Lions, who visit the Green Bay Packers in their season opener on Sunday, had picked up Williams’ fifth-year rookie option in April, meaning the 24-year-old was set to be under contract through 2026.

Williams hauled in 58 catches on 91 targets for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games (11 starts) in 2024. He has 83 receptions for 1,396 yards and 10 touchdowns in 33 career regular-season games (21 starts).

He also has seven receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown and two carries for 103 yards and two TDs in four playoff games (three starts).

Detroit selected Williams with the 12th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He had to delay playing in games as a rookie while recovering from a torn ACL during his college career.

Williams has been suspended by the league two times — for six games total — in his first three seasons in the NFL for violating gambling and performance-enhancing drug policies.

Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold (6) practices during training camp at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

Lions CB Terrion Arnold (hamstring) exits practice

Detroit Lions starting cornerback Terrion Arnold left Tuesday’s practice and is being evaluated for a hamstring injury, the team announced.

Arnold, 22, limped off the field and worked with a trainer on the sidelines, according to reports.

Detroit selected Arnold with the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Alabama.

He started 15 of 16 regular-season games as a rookie, made 60 tackles and defended 10 passes. He also started the Lions’ lone playoff game and made six tackles.

Head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that safety Kerby Joseph is dealing with “knee irritation” which has kept him out of the last few practices in Allen Park, Mich. Campbell expects Joseph to return to practice after the Lions play the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

Joseph, 24, was selected first-team All-Pro in 2024, when he made 83 tackles, defended 12 passes and made a league-leading nine interceptions — returning one for a touchdown — in starting all 17 regular-season games.

The Lions picked him in the third round of the 2022 draft out of Illinois. He has 247 career tackles with 31 passes defended and 17 interceptions in 49 games (46 starts).

Also on Tuesday, the Lions signed running back Jacob Saylors and waived tight end Luke Deal with an injury designation.

Chargers first team to open training camp

The Los Angeles Chargers will be the first NFL team to kick off training camp on Thursday, after rookies and select players reported last Saturday and veterans arrived on Wednesday.

The Chargers and the Detroit Lions — with rookies reporting on Thursday and veterans on duty starting Saturday — will be the first two teams with their entire squads on site. The Chargers, who hold camp in El Segundo, Calif., and the Lions (Allen Park, Mich.) open the preseason with the NFL/Hall of Fame Game on July 31 in Canton, Ohio.

Chargers starting linebacker Daiyan Henley, who had offseason shoulder surgery, said on Wednesday that he expects to be a full participant at training camp. Henley, 25, tore his labrum early in the 2024 campaign and still started all 17 games as well as the lone playoff game. He totaled 147 tackles, one interception, one sack and eight passes defended during the regular season.

Running back Najee Harris likely will begin camp on the active/non-football injury list as he is treated for what his agent called a “superficial eye injury” from a Fourth of July fireworks incident, Chargers general manager Joe Horitz said Wednesday.

Harris was expected to report on Wednesday to the team’s facility in El Segundo after remaining in the Bay Area following the incident in Antioch, Calif., and treatment at Stanford hospital, Horitz said. Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, said following the mishap that the running back is expected to be ready for the 2025 season.

The 27-year-old signed a one-year deal, $5.25 million deal with the Chargers in the offseason that could be worth up to an additional $4 million if he meets all incentives for rushing yardage. Harris and first-round draft pick Omarion Hampton (North Carolina) are expected to be the team’s main ball carriers.

Harris topped 1,000 rushing yards in all four of his seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has 4,312 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns in 68 NFL games (all starts). The Steelers selected him 24th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, and Harris made the Pro Bowl and the NFL All-Rookie team that season. He became a free agent after the 2024 season.

The 2025 regular season starts on Thursday, Sept. 4 with the Dallas Cowboys against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys will have their full squad on site on Monday, while the defending Super Bowl champions will do the same on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who face the Chargers in the league’s second regular-season game in Brazil on Sept. 5, will have their full squad on site on Monday. There will be 30 clubs fully reported by Tuesday, while the Atlanta Falcons and Steelers are having players report on July 23.

This year’s training camps will feature 29 clubs scheduling joint practices with other teams, and 26 clubs (81.3 percent) will hold the majority of camp at their practice facility, home stadium or at a site within 10 miles of team headquarters. By comparison, 10 of the 31 teams in 2000 chose to stay home.

Six clubs are holding camps away from their facilities: Buffalo Bills (Rochester, N.Y.), Cowboys (Oxnard, Calif.), Indianapolis Colts (Westfield, Ind.), Chiefs (St. Joseph, Mo.), Rams (Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles) and Steelers (Latrobe, Pa.).

Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson: ‘I’m fully cleared’

Detroit Lions star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson uttered three little words fans were waiting for Thursday when discussing his recovery from the fractured tibia and fibula that ended his 2024 season.

“I’m fully cleared,” Hutchinson said.

OK, Hutchinson said more than that as he plans to get up to speed during the Lions’ offseason activities.

“I’m rolling with the boys now and it feels like I’m back to being myself again,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to the season. I think this is the most excited I’ve been for OTAs in my life. This is the biggest hiatus I’ve had without playing ball so I’m pumped.”

Hutchinson, 24, has recorded 28.5 sacks in 39 games (all starts) since being selected by Detroit with the second overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

He had 7.5 sacks in five games last season before he hurt his leg in a collision with teammate Alim McNeill in the third quarter of a 47-9 road victory against the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 13.

Now, Hutchinson will have a familiar face as his new defensive coordinator. Kelvin Sheppard was elevated from his post as linebackers coach to replace Aaron Glenn, who is now head coach of the New York Jets.

“The way he attacks things … you have to know everything that is going on,” Hutchinson said of Sheppard. “That’s what I love about him, and I think that’s going to have our defense very, very prepared this year.”

When Glenn took over as Detroit’s defensive coordinator in 2021, Sheppard came on board and has spent the last four seasons learning under the former three-time Pro Bowl defensive back and 15-year NFL veteran.

Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph (31) celebrates an interception (his second of the game) against San Francisco 49ers during the second half at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Monday, Dec. 30, 2024.

Reports: Lions making Kerby Joseph highest-paid safety in NFL history

The Detroit Lions and Kerby Joseph have agreed on a four-year, $86 million contract extension that will make him the highest-paid safety in NFL history, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday night.

Joseph was scheduled to make $3.621 million in base salary in 2025, the last year of his rookie contract. Now his $21.5 million annual salary and total value of $86 million are both more than Tampa Bay is paying safety Antoine Winfield Jr. ($21.025 million annually, $84.1 million total).

Joseph, 24, was voted first-team All-Pro last season after posting a league-best nine interceptions — including one returned for a touchdown — as well as 83 tackles and 12 passes defensed in 17 regular-season games (all starts).

Detroit selected Joseph in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Illinois. He has 17 interceptions, 247 tackles, 31 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one return touchdown in 49 games (46 starts).

Report: Lions adding veteran CB Rock Ya-Sin

The Detroit Lions are fortifying their depth at cornerback by agreeing to terms with veteran Rock Ya-Sin, according to NFL Network on Thursday.

Ya-Sin, 28, played primarily on special teams in his lone season with the San Francisco 49ers, totaling three tackles in 13 games in 2024.

The Lions already brought in free agent cornerback DJ Reed on a reported three-year, $48 million contract. Reed, 28, is expected to replace former starter Carlton Davis, who signed with the New England Patriots.

The cornerback room in Detroit is green behind Reed and Amik Robertson, 26, who emerged as the top cover corner after Davis broke his jaw in December.

A pair of 2024 draft picks, Terrion Arnold (first round) and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (second), are also on the current CB depth chart. Arnold is projected as a starter again after making 15 starts in 16 games as a rookie. Rakestraw was never fully healthy because of a hamstring injury.

Ya-Sin has 199 career tackles, two interceptions, 41 passes defended, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 79 regular-season games (39 starts) for the Indianapolis Colts (2019-21), Las Vegas Raiders (2022), Baltimore Ravens (2023) and 49ers.

Indianapolis selected Ya-Sin in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Temple.

Detroit Lions linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard watches a play against Indianapolis Colts during the second half at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024.

Report: Kelvin Sheppard replaces Aaron Glenn as Lions’ DC

The Detroit Lions have filled one of their open coordinator positions, elevating linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator, NFL Media reported on Saturday.

Sheppard, 37, takes over for Aaron Glenn, who left to become the head coach of the New York Jets on Wednesday following the Lions’ divisional-round playoff loss to the Washington Commanders last weekend.

When Glenn took over as Detroit’s DC in 2021, Sheppard came on board and has spent the last four seasons learning under the former three-time Pro Bowl defensive back and 15-year NFL veteran.

Sheppard, who played linebacker for eight NFL seasons, including his final season with Detroit in 2018, served as director of player development at LSU — where he played college football — in 2020 before returning to the Motor City.

Detroit remains in search of an offensive coordinator to replace Ben Johnson, who took over head coaching duties with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.
