WR DeVante Parker retires 2 months after signing with Eagles

Wide receiver DeVante Parker has retired after nine seasons in the NFL — and just two months after joining a new team.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Parker to a one-year deal in March, but Parker told ESPN on Monday that he has other priorities in mind right now.

“I want to see my kids, spend quality time with them,” Parker said. “I want to be there for them whenever I can.”

Parker, 31, spent the past two seasons with the New England Patriots after playing seven for the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him 14th overall in 2015. Parker had 33 catches for 394 yards without a touchdown in 13 games last season.

Across 119 career games (88 starts) for Miami and New England, Parker hauled in 402 receptions for 5,660 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Parker was expected to be an option at WR3 for the Eagles behind stars A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Philadelphia also signed Parris Campbell and added two wide receivers in the draft.

The New England Patriots and wide receiver DeVante Parker are in agreement on a new three-year contract worth $33 million, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

The deal includes $14 million in guaranteed money and per-game roster bonuses, per the report.

Parker, 30, was set to enter the 2023 season on the final year of his current contract, which would have paid him a base salary of $5.7 million.

Parker caught 31 passes for 539 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games (11 starts) for the Patriots in 2022, his first season with the team. The Patriots acquired Parker in a trade with the Miami Dolphins in April 2022.

Reports: NFL, union review handling of DeVante Parker’s concussion

The NFL and NFL Players Association have begun an inquiry into the on-field machinations of New England Patriots wide receiver DeVante Parker’s head injury sustained in Monday night’s game, ESPN and NFL Network reported.

Specifically, the league and union are reviewing why the game wasn’t stopped despite Parker wobbling after a hard hit in the first quarter. Instead, it was Parker’s teammate Nelson Agholor who beckoned game officials to stop play and get Parker off the field.

Parker was subsequently removed from the game when the Arizona Cardinals challenged his catch on the play in question. He was then ruled out for the rest of the game.

Parker on Tuesday thanked Agholor for being “aware of the situation” while calling out the NFL — with profanity — on his Instagram page.

It was reminiscent of Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa being allowed to return to a Week 3 game after he was wobbly following a hard hit to the turf. That incident prompted a change to the concussion protocol; ataxia was added to the list of no-go symptoms. Ataxia is defined as “abnormality of balance/stability, motor coordination or dysfunctional speech caused by a neurological issue.”

Parker caught a 10-yard pass at the 4:19 mark of the first quarter and went to the ground hard on a tackle by the Cardinals’ Antonio Hamilton. Parker was slow and wobbly to get up, but play wasn’t initially halted by spotters.

Parker, 29, has 25 catches for 460 yards and a touchdown in 12 games (10 starts) this season, his first in New England.

Patriots announce trade for WR DeVante Parker

The New England Patriots on Tuesday formally announced their trade for wide receiver DeVante Parker.

The Dolphins also paid tribute to Parker, who played seven seasons in Miami.

Terms were not announced. However, the Dolphins will send a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft to the Patriots in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, per reports from this past weekend.

Parker, 29, became expendable after Miami acquired All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill in last month’s trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, and after a breakout season by 2021 rookie Jaylen Waddle.

Over seven seasons with the Dolphins, he logged 338 catches for 4,727 yards and 24 scores in 93 games (64 starts).
