Lions sign Devin Funchess, move him to TE

The Detroit Lions signed erstwhile wide receiver Devin Funchess on Tuesday and have converted him to tight end.

The 6-foot-4 Funchess, who sports 21 career touchdown receptions as a WR, hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2019.

Funchess, 28, was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2015 draft. His best season came in 2017 when he caught 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns.

Funchess signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts in March 2019 but played in just one game after breaking his collarbone in Week 1 on Sept. 8, 2019. That was his last appearance in an NFL game.

Funchess then signed a one-year deal with Green Bay in March 2020, but he opted out of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. He never suited up in the regular season for the Packers, who released him in August 2021.

He spent time on San Francisco’s practice squad during the 2021 season.

Funchess has 164 career catches for 2,265 yards.

Packers place WR Devin Funchess on IR

Wide receiver Devin Funchess, who has appeared in just one NFL game in the past two seasons due to injury, may miss the 2021 season as well after the Green Bay Packers put him on the injured reserve list Wednesday.

Funchess could return in 2021 if he and the Packers reach an injury settlement and he signs elsewhere.

He had been having a resurgent preseason, catching six passes for 70 yards against the Houston Texans in the Packers’ first game, but he sat out the New York Jets game the following week with a hamstring injury.

The Packers signed Funchess to the roster in 2020, but he opted out of the season. His 2019 season with the Indianapolis Colts was cut short after a single game when he suffered a broken collarbone.

Funchess, 27, was a second-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2015. His best season with the Panthers came in 2017 when he caught 63 balls for 840 yards and eight touchdowns.

For his career, Funchess has 164 catches for 2,265 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Packers WR Devin Funchess apologizes for Asian slur

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Devin Funchess apologized early Sunday for using an Asian racial slur during a press conference Saturday night.

“I want to apologize for the disparaging remark I used tonight,” Funchess posted on Twitter. “It was not ok. I have grown to develop deep personal and business relationships in the Asian community! I meant no harm, and those that know me, know I have love and respect for all cultures and people. I will learn from this and will continue to grow as a person. I’m forever sorry!”

Speaking with the media after Green Bay’s Family Night practice at Lambeau Field, Funchess said he was happy to see reporters in person after previously meeting only virtually via Zoom. Vaccinated reporters are still required to wear masks at press conferences.

“I can tell you were smiling when I see your face,” Funchess told a reporter. “I can see your face. Everybody goes (slur) and that’s when I know.”

Funchess, 27, simultaneously pointed to his eyes, an offensive gesture against Asians.

Funchess opted out of the 2020 season with the Packers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He missed most of the 2019 season with the Indianapolis Colts after breaking his collarbone in Week 1.

A second-round draft pick by Carolina in 2015, Funchess has 164 catches for 2,265 yards and 21 touchdowns in 62 games (41 starts) with the Panthers (2015-18) and Colts.
