CB Darius Slay out, WR DeVonta Smith questionable for Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay has been ruled out for Sunday’s visit to Baltimore, and wide receiver DeVonta Smith is listed as questionable.

Slay did not practice this week while in the NFL’s concussion protocol after leaving the Eagles’ 37-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday with a head injury.

Smith, meanwhile, did not participate in Wednesday’s practice and was limited Thursday and Friday while dealing with a hamstring injury. He did not practice at all last week and missed Sunday’s matchup vs. the Rams, his second absence this season after missing the Eagles’ Week 4 loss at Tampa Bay due to a concussion.

Philadelphia also ruled out linebacker/fullback Ben VanSumeren (knee) and listed wide receiver Johnny Wilson (hamstring) as questionable for Sunday after he missed practice on Friday.

Smith, 26, leads the Eagles with 41 receptions and four touchdown catches ands ranks second with 516 receiving yards in nine starts this season.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has 281 catches for 3,694 yards and 23 scores in 59 games (58 starts) since the Eagles drafted him with the 10th overall pick in 2021 out of Alabama.

Slay, 33, has played in 10 games this season despite dealing with a knee injury in Week 6 and a groin injury in Week 8.

In 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions (2013-19) and Eagles (2020-24), Slay has totaled 28 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns), 155 pass breakups and 602 tackles in 173 career games (163 starts). He has been selected to six Pro Bowl games and was a 2017 All-Pro first-team honoree.

NFC East-leading Philadelphia (9-2) takes a seven-game winning streak to Baltimore (8-4).

A.J. Brown, Lane Johnson set to return for Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are set for the return of standout wide receiver A.J. Brown and stalwart right tackle Lane Johnson coming out of their bye week and heading into Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

DeVonta Smith is also likely to return but hadn’t cleared the concussion protocol as of Wednesday, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Brown has missed the past three games with a hamstring injury. Johnson and Smith both suffered concussions in the Week 3 win over the New Orleans Saints. Johnson said Wednesday he cleared the protocol.

All 52 players on the Eagles’ active roster practiced Wednesday, per the report.

Brown had five catches for 119 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil.

Smith has 21 catches for 239 yards and a touchdown in his three starts.

The Eagles (2-2) host the scuffling Browns (1-4), who have lost three straight.

Eagles WR DeVonta Smith out, A.J. Brown questionable vs. Bucs

After being leveled by a helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter of last week’s game, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith was ruled out for this Sunday against the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to concussion protocol.

The Eagles may not be down both of their top two receivers, however, as A.J. Brown (hamstring) returned to practice Friday in a limited capacity and was deemed questionable for Sunday.

In the Eagles’ 15-12 victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, Smith caught a short pass and his forward progress was stopped. He was being driven backward by two players before Saints defensive tackle Khristian Boyd came from behind and blindsided Smith with a helmet-to-helmet hit. Smith lay prone on the ground for several minutes before eventually walking off the field for evaluation.

Boyd was fined $4,600 for the hit Friday.

Smith, the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner, has 21 catches for 239 yards and one touchdown through three games in 2024. In 53 career games (52 starts) for Philadelphia, he has racked up 261 receptions for 3,417 yards and 20 TDs.

Brown, meanwhile, hasn’t played since the Eagles’ Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. He had five catches for 119 yards and a touchdown in that game.

He was a DNP at Eagles’ practices before Friday. The three-time Pro Bowler has 384 receptions, 6,066 yards and 43 touchdowns in his six-year career with the Tennessee Titans (2019-21) and Eagles (2022-24).

Right tackle Lane Johnson (concussion) is also questionable for the Eagles.

Tampa Bay ruled out defensive lineman Calijah Kancey (calf) and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (foot). Wide receiver Jalen McMillian (hamstring) is doubtful, while five players — rookie running back Bucky Irving (hamstring), receiver Kameron Johnson (ankle), tight end Ko Kieft (ankle), right tackle Luke Goedeke (concussion) and nose tackle Vita Vea (knee) — were deemed questionable after practicing in limited fashion Friday.

Reports: Saints rookie fined $4,600 for hit on Eagles WR DeVonta Smith

New Orleans Saints rookie defensive tackle Khristian Boyd was fined $4,600 by the NFL for his hit on Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith, multiple media outlets reported.

Per the NFL, a hit on a defenseless player can draw a fine up to $16,883 for first-time offenders. The league’s collective bargaining agreement, however, details that “no first offense may result in the imposition of a baseline fine in excess of 10 percent of a player’s salary cap count for the game.” Boyd’s salary cap hit this season is $839,707, per Spotrac.

Boyd was not penalized for the blindside hit on Smith in the fourth quarter of the Saints’ 15-12 loss to the Eagles on Sunday. Smith was knocked out by the hit and did not return to the game.

Smith, who remains in concussion protocol, did not participate in practice on Wednesday or Thursday and appears unlikely to play for Philadelphia (2-1) in its game on Sunday against the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1).

Several Eagles players took issue with the hit. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson labeled it a “cheap shot.”

Boyd defended himself in an Instagram post that was later deleted: “I would never deliberately try to give someone a serious injury. Just tried to make a play on the ball. Get well soon 6.”

Boyd, 24, has recorded one tackle in three games this season.

Eagles WR A.J. Brown (hamstring) not spotted at practice

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown was not present for the open portion of practice on Saturday, raising questions about his availability for the team’s home opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday.

Brown, 27, popped up on the injury report Friday with an ailing hamstring issue. He was listed as a limited participant in practice.

“Just got a little tight in practice yesterday,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said on Saturday morning. “We’ll see how that goes.”

Brown, 27, had five catches for 119 yards and a touchdown in Philadelphia’s 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 6 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Brown has 384 receptions for 6,066 yards and 43 touchdowns in 78 career games (70 starts) with the Tennessee Titans (2019-21) and Eagles.

DeVonta Smith and newcomer Jahan Dotson would see a larger workload should Brown sit out or be limited against the Falcons (0-1).

Eagles lock up WR DeVonta Smith through 2028 season

The Philadelphia Eagles made a long-term commitment to wide receiver DeVonta Smith on Monday.

The team exercised his fifth-year option and agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension through 2028.

Smith’s option for 2025 is worth $15.6 million and NFL Network reported the extension is for $75 million, with $51 million guaranteed.

Smith, 25, has tallied 240 catches for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns in 50 games (49 starts) since being drafted 10th overall in 2021 out of Alabama, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2020.

He set a career high with 95 catches in 2022 and posted his second straight 1,000-yard season with 1,066 in 2023.

The $25 million average annual value of Smith’s extension equals fellow Philadelphia wideout A.J. Brown’s deal and trails only the Miami Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill ($30 million), the Las Vegas Raiders’ Davante Adams ($28 million) and the Los Angeles Rams’ Cooper Kupp ($26.7 million).

The Eagles signed offensive linemen Landon Dickerson (four years, $84 million) and Jordan Mailata (three years, $66 million) to long-term deals earlier this offseason.

Report: Eagles WR DeVonta Smith next in line for payday

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith is a “strong candidate” for a massive contract extension, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The Eagles already have locked up offensive linemen Landon Dickerson (four years, $84 million) and Jordan Mailata (three years, $66 million) to long-term deals this offseason. Smith appears to be next in line, per the report.

“DeVonta is an incredible person, incredible player; obviously homegrown, young guy,” general manager Howie Roseman said at the scouting combine in February when asked about signing Smith to an extension this offseason. “Without getting into specifics, those are guys you don’t really want to leave.”

Smith is expected to command a new deal worth $25 million or more per season, per ESPN. Wideout Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins has a top average annual salary of $30 million, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders’ Davante Adams ($28 million), the Los Angeles Rams’ Cooper Kupp ($26.7 million) and Eagles teammate A.J. Brown ($25 million).

Smith is due a base salary of $1.055 million in 2024 with a cap hit of $6.4 million. The Eagles have until May 2 to exercise the fifth-year option on Smith’s rookie contract, estimated to be worth $16 million for the 2025 season, per Spotrac.
