Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter wins Heisman Trophy

Colorado receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter was named winner of the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night.

Hunter joins running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994 as the only Colorado players to win the Heisman.

Hunter has 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and ranks second nationally with 14 touchdown catches. On defense, he has four interceptions with 15 passes defensed and was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Hunter won the Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award as the top receiver in the country.

Hunter is in his second and final season at Colorado as he has stated that he will enter the 2025 NFL Draft. He began his college career at Jackson State and transferred to the Buffaloes when Deion Sanders departed to become Colorado coach.

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel were the other finalists.

Jeanty has rushed for 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns, Ward has thrown for 4,123 yards and 36 touchdowns and Gabriel has completed 73.2 percent of his passes for 3,558 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon (28) is shown during the team’s mini camp Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Packers RB AJ Dillon lands on IR with neck injury

Packers running back AJ Dillon was placed on injured reserve with no designation to return, ending his 2024 season before it begins.

Dillon, 26, finished last season on IR with a neck stinger, the same injury that will prevent him from suiting up as the primary backup to new starting running back Josh Jacobs this season.

Rookie third-rounder MarShawn Lloyd and Emanuel Wilson are listed as the primary backups for the Packers, who parted with longtime starter Aaron Jones.

Lloyd’s availability for Week 1 has been questioned because of a hamstring injury, but he avoided starting the season on the physically unable to perform list.

Dillon had 613 rushing yards last season and was lauded for his success in short-yardage since joining the Packers as a second-round pick in 2020.

He has 2,428 yards and 16 touchdowns with the Packers.

Dillon missed the final three games of the 2023 season with a neck stinger, his second of the season. But general manager Brian Gutekunst said at the NFL Scouting Combine the Packers were planning to make an offer to Dillon.

“AJ’s done a great job for us the past four years and we’d love to have him back,” Gutekunst said.

He re-signed with the Packers in March rather than pursue a larger role elsewhere in free agency. According to NFL Network, the one-year deal was a little-used qualifying offer known as a four-year QC (qualifying contract).

Police review launched after officer shoves Packers RB AJ Dillon at Lambeau

The Green Bay Police Department will investigate the police officer who shoved Packers running back AJ Dillon during a soccer match at Lambeau Field on Saturday night.

“The Green Bay Police Department is aware of the social media video which shows an interaction between a Green Bay Police Officer and Green Bay Packer AJ Dillon at the soccer match at Lambeau Field on July 23, 2022,” the department said in a statement Monday. “It is clear that there was a miscommunication between the Officer and Mr. Dillon. The Green Bay Police Department appreciates the perspective and supportive words from Mr. Dillon. The Green Bay Police Department Professional Standards/Internal Affairs Division has initiated a review of this incident.”

The incident in question took place at a friendly between Manchester City and Bayern Munich, the first soccer match in Lambeau Field’s history.

Video surfaced on social media showing Dillon on the field trying to perform a Lambeau Leap to entertain the crowd during a weather delay.

A police officer interferes, first grabbing him by the back of his collar to stop him from jumping and then shoving Dillon aggressively as the Packers’ running back offered an explanation.

“Two security told me and helped me come down to the field during the 30 minute rain delay, so I could do a lambeau leap and hype up the crowd… I’m assuming (the officer) missed them telling me to come down,” Dillon wrote on Twitter.

“Just miscommunication between parties, the @GBPolice are great people and I’m glad we have them down there for our games to keep us safe. Standing there in the pouring rain with all those people it’s hard to know what’s going on with just one. All good.”

UCF QB Dillon Gabriel says he’s entering transfer portal

Central Florida quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced Saturday that he will enter the transfer portal with an eye on playing elsewhere next season.

The UCF star has been sidelined since breaking a collarbone against Louisville in Week 3 of the season.

“After much prayer and reflection, I have decided my journey at UCF has come to an end,” Dillon said on Twitter. “I will be entering the transfer portal to explore other opportunities.”

Dillon has passed for 8,037 yards, 70 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his three seasons with the Knights. The left-hander passed for 814 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions this season prior to the injury.

Dillon passed for 3,653 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2019 and 3,570 yards and 32 scores last season. The native of Hawaii was intercepted seven times in 2019 and threw just four in 413 attempts the following season.

Speculation has Ole Miss as a possible destination for Gabriel. Rebel star Matt Corral has indicated he will enter the NFL draft after this season.

Packers down to spare parts at RB

Running backs AJ Dillon and Jamaal Williams are not available for the Packers this week, leaving Green Bay to hold its breath on the status of Aaron Jones for Thursday’s game at San Francisco.

Dillon tested positive for COVID-19 and Williams was ruled out Tuesday as a “high risk close contact.”

Jones, who hasn’t played the past two weeks due to a calf injury, might not be ready to return Thursday.

That would leave the Packers with two healthy running backs — Dexter Williams and return specialist Tyler Ervin. Ervin’s health is debatable; he was questionable for Week 8 with a wrist injury.

Ervin has four rushing attempts this season. Dexter Williams does not have a carry.
