Steelers RG Mason McCormick (hand) could play vs. Ravens

Pittsburgh starting right guard Mason McCormick fractured his hand in the regular-season finale against Cincinnati, but the rookie could play in Saturday’s playoff game, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Monday.

The Steelers finished 10-7 after a four-game losing streak to end the regular season, and they’ll visit AFC North champion Baltimore on Saturday in the AFC wild-card round.

McCormick, 24, broke his hand and was replaced by Spencer Anderson as the Steelers lost to the Bengals last Saturday, but Tomlin said McCormick might be able to play.

“He’ll be sized for a cast and/or a brace and check functionality there,” Tomlin said. “And so his participation and the quality of his participation will kind of be an indication of his potential availability as we push forward.”

Pittsburgh selected McCormick in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of South Dakota State. He has started 14 of 17 games and played on 83 percent of the offensive snaps.

Tomlin also said that starting cornerback Donte Jackson, who sat out Sunday’s game because of lingering back issues, is possible to return on Saturday.

“He feels good this morning, but again, we’ll watch him throughout the course of the week and see what his participation does in terms of the possibility of his inclusion,” Tomlin said.

Jackson, 29, has started all 15 games that he has played this season and has 38 tackles, a career-high five interceptions and eight passes defended. He played the previous six seasons for Carolina before being traded to Pittsburgh last March. He has 19 career interceptions — one returned for a touchdown — 341 tackles and 54 pass breakups in 95 games (91 starts).

The Panthers selected Jackson in the second round of the 2018 draft.

Reports: Steelers deal WR Diontae Johnson to Panthers

The Carolina Panthers acquired Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson on Tuesday in exchange for cornerback Donte Jackson, multiple reports said.

The teams are also swapping late picks, with Carolina sending its sixth-rounder to Pittsburgh but receiving a seventh-rounder.

Johnson, 27, has started 67 of his 77 career games over five NFL seasons in Pittsburgh. In that time he has made 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Johnson’s best season came in 2021, when he racked up 107 catches, 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns and earned a Pro Bowl selection.

He joins a Panthers team whose top target was 33-year-old slot receiver Adam Thielen, who is coming off a 1,000-yard year. The Panthers are entering Year 2 of quarterback Bryce Young’s career, with Dave Canales taking over as head coach.

Jackson, 28, spent his first six NFL campaigns in Carolina. He started 16 games last season, which was his first without at least one interception. He has 14 career interceptions and 46 pass breakups in 80 games (76 starts).

Report: Panthers parting ways with CB Donte Jackson

The Carolina Panthers are expected to release or trade veteran cornerback Donte Jackson, ESPN reported Monday.

Jackson, 28, has a $4 million roster bonus due March 16. His release would save $5.9 million against the salary cap.

He made 16 starts in 2023 and recorded 59 tackles, five passes defensed and one forced fumble.

The 2018 second-round pick has 14 interceptions and 303 tackles in 80 games (76 starts) for the Panthers.

Jackson is heading into the final season of a three-year, $35.2 million extension signed in March 2022.

Panthers CB Donte Jackson (ankle) questionable vs. Falcons

Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson is listed as questionable for Thursday’s game against the visiting Atlanta Falcons after being a full participant in the team’s last two practice sessions.

Jackson did not play a snap in Carolina’s 42-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals while nursing a tender ankle.

The Panthers (2-7) also listed running back Chuba Hubbard (ankle), defensive tackle Matthew Ioannidis (back) and right tackle Taylor Moton (elbow) as questionable for the NFC South clash against Atlanta (4-5). Hubbard, Ioannidis and Moton were listed as full participants in Wednesday’s practice.

Carolina ruled out safety Juston Burris (concussion) and wide receiver Rashard Higgins (illness) for Thursday’s game.

The Falcons ruled out starting cornerback A.J. Terrell (hamstring), safety Erik Harris (foot) and tight end Feleipe Franks (calf) for the primetime contest.

Cornell Armstrong has filled in for Terrell, who sustained the injury during Atlanta’s 35-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 23.

Panthers CB Donte Jackson (groin) out for season

The Carolina Panthers placed cornerback Donte Jackson on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season.

The move marks the second straight day that the Panthers shuffled a starter to season-ending injured reserve. They placed star running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve Monday with an ailing ankle.

Jackson, 26, sustained a groin injury during Carolina’s 33-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. An MRI the following day revealed the extent of the injury for Jackson, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Jackson recorded 61 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 12 games this season for the Panthers, who also have fellow cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore, A.J. Bouye, Rashaan Melvin, C.J. Henderson and Keith Taylor Jr. on the roster.

Also on Tuesday, the Panthers activated rookie guard Deonte Brown. He had been designated to return from injured reserve after being sidelined with a knee issue.

Panthers RB McCaffrey (shoulder) ruled out vs. Vikings

Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey has been ruled out for Sunday’s road game against the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced.

He initially was listed as questionable with a shoulder injury but will miss his ninth game this season.

McCaffrey sustained an AC joint injury in his right shoulder in Carolina’s 33-31 loss at Kansas City on Nov. 8. He has since sat out the Panthers’ 46-23 loss to Tampa Bay on Nov. 15 and a 20-0 victory over Detroit on Sunday.

Signed to a four-year, $64 million contract extension in the offseason, McCaffrey has rushed for 225 yards and five touchdowns and caught 17 passes for 149 yards and one score in three games in 2020. He suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2.

In 2019, McCaffrey gained an NFL-high 2,392 yards from scrimmage and scored 19 touchdowns from scrimmage, which tied for the league lead.

Mike Davis once again is expected to serve as the primary running back for the Panthers (4-7) against the Vikings (4-6).

Also on Saturday, the Panthers shuffled cornerback Donte Jackson (toe) from doubtful to out.
