Report: QB Drew Pyne heading to Bowling Green, his fourth school

Quarterback Drew Pyne will make Bowling Green his fourth Division I school, he told ESPN on Monday.

Coming out of high school in Connecticut, Pyne was listed as a four-star prospect and the No. 8 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2020 by the 247Sports composite. He committed to Notre Dame out of high school.

Pyne, 24, spent three seasons (2020-22) with the Fighting Irish, then transferred to Arizona State in 2023 and to Missouri in 2024.

Overall, he’s appeared in 25 games, thrown for 2,921 yards and has 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He is 9-3 as a starter, and Bowling Green has an opening for a starter.

He visited Bowling Green and new coach Eddie George over the weekend.

“The opportunity to go play for Eddie George, a returning offensive line that’s strong and experienced,” Pyne told ESPN about what drew him to the Falcons. “And a team that’s very good, played in three straight bowl games and can compete for a championship.”

Former coach Scot Loeffler joined the coaching staff of the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving the opening for George, formerly the head coach at Tennessee State. George and offensive coordinator Travis Partridge run a spread-style offense.
.
“The sell was the team is very gritty, works hard and wants to win games,” Pyne said.

Pyne, a graduate transfer, entered the portal last week and cannot take part in spring practice with Bowling Green because he already has done so with Missouri. ESPN said he will enroll at his new school on May 18 with two years of eligibility remaining.

Reports: Missouri QB Drew Pyne enters transfer portal

Missouri quarterback Drew Pyne is entering the transfer portal as a grad transfer, several reports said Tuesday.

Pyne will seek his fourth school in four years, following previous stays at Notre Dame (2020-22), Arizona State (2023) and Missouri.

Pyne appeared in six games last season, making just one start when first-string quarterback Brady Cook was hurt. Pyne finished the season with 391 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Missouri added former Penn State backup quarterback Beau Pribula in the portal over the winter, and Pribula will battle Sam Horn and true freshman Matt Zollers for the starting job.

Pyne was able to enter the portal before the sport’s spring transfer window opens April 16-25 because of his status as a graduate.

Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Drew Pyne (10) warms up before playing the Fresno State Bulldogs at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Sept. 16, 2023.

Report: Ex-Arizona State, Notre Dame QB Drew Pyne transfers to Missouri

Former Arizona State and Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne committed to Missouri, ESPN reported Sunday.

Pyne entered the NCAA transfer portal in December and re-enrolled at Notre Dame for the spring semester to earn his degree in American Studies. When he transferred to Arizona State, he was one semester short of graduation.

As a graduate transfer at Missouri, he’ll be eligible to play immediately and will have three years of eligibility remaining after factoring in a medical redshirt and the extra year granted by the NCAA for the pandemic-impacted season.

He’ll be joining a quarterback room headed by Brady Cook, who led Missouri to a Cotton Bowl victory over Ohio State in December and is returning for his final season of eligibility.

Backup quarterback Sam Horn will miss the upcoming season following Tommy John surgery.

Pyne, 23, began his college football career in 2020 at Notre Dame. He saw limited action the first two seasons, redshirting as a freshman, and started 10 games in 2022 with an 8-2 record, including 4-1 against top 25 teams.

The Connecticut native transferred to Arizona after the 2022 season but played in just two games for the Sun Devils because of a lingering hamstring injury and other injuries.

In his career, Pyne has appeared in 19 games, completing 61.6 percent of his passes for 2,530 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Report: Sun Devils to start QB Drew Pyne vs. No. 5 USC

Injury-depleted Arizona State will start Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne at quarterback Saturday against No. 5 Southern California, ESPN reported Friday.

Jaden Rashada started the first two games and Trenton Bourguet was under center last week for the Sun Devils (1-2, 0-0 Pac-12), but both have been ruled out against the Trojans (3-0, 1-0) due to injuries.

Pyne, slowed by a hamstring injury in camp, came on in relief in last Saturday’s 29-0 home loss to Fresno State and completed 5 of 13 passes for 52 yards with two interceptions in his ASU debut.

Pyne had to leave that game with an injury and was replaced by true freshman walk-on Jacob Conover.

Pyne completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,021 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games last season with the Fighting Irish.

He completed 23 of 26 passes for 318 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in Notre Dame’s 37-28 loss at USC on Nov. 26, 2022.
