Reports: Panthers keeping DC Ejiro Evero

The Carolina Panthers will retain defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and most of the defensive staff under new head coach Dave Canales, ESPN and The Athletic reported Monday.

Evero, 43, just completed his first season in a three-year contract with Carolina and had interviewed for head-coaching vacancies with the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons and Panthers.

Several teams reportedly were interested in Evero as a defensive coordinator, but the Panthers have the power to block lateral moves and used it on at least three teams’ requests, according to reports.

“This is really important for me,” Canales said at his introductory news conference Thursday of keeping Evero on staff. “Especially as a first-time head coach who’s like, ‘I’m here to make sure we get our football right.’”

Evero joined then-coach Frank Reich’s staff in Carolina last season after serving as the defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos in 2022.

Before joining the Broncos under former head coach Nathaniel Hackett, Evero was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Rams (2017-21), Green Bay Packers (2016), San Francisco 49ers (2011-15) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2007-09).

Canales was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator in 2023 and faced the Panthers and Evero’s defensive schemes twice. Though the Bucs won both games, 21-18 and 9-0, Canales said the Carolina defense was “really hard to deal with.”

“Great, sound football, playing hard, some great players in some spots, and just the whole thing coming together,” Canales said.

Panthers DC Ejiro Evero has 2nd interview with Falcons

Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero has completed a second interview for Atlanta’s head coaching position, the Falcons announced Wednesday.

Evero, 43, joined the Panthers in 2023 after holding the same position with the Denver Broncos in 2022.

The Falcons have also conducted second in-person interviews with former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

Evero broke into the NFL coaching community as a quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2007-09). He joined the San Francisco 49ers in a similar role in 2011, moving to offensive assistant (2012-13) and defensive assistant (2014-15) there before joining the Green Bay Packers as a defensive assistant in 2016.

Evero spent the next five seasons on Sean McVay’s staff with the Rams, coaching the safeties (2017-20) before serving as secondary coach and passing game coordinator in 2021.

Also on Atlanta’s list of reported candidates to replace Arthur Smith are Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and two candidates from the Detroit Lions, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Falcons interview Ejiro Evero, Anthony Weaver for head-coaching job

The Atlanta Falcons conducted virtual interviews with Ejiro Evero and Anthony Weaver on Sunday as they continue to search for a new head coach.

Evero, 43, spent this past season as the Carolina Panthers’ defensive coordinator after holding the same role with the Denver Broncos during the 2022 campaign.

At the NFL level, Evero has also had stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2007-09), San Francisco 49ers (2011-15), Green Bay Packers (2016) and Los Angeles Rams (2017-21) working mostly on the defensive side of the ball.

Weaver, 43, has been with the Baltimore Ravens as their associate head coach and defensive line coach since the 2022 season. He went to Baltimore in 2021, when he was the defensive line coach and run game coordinator.

Before his time with the Ravens, Weaver spent five seasons with the Houston Texans (2016-20) as their defensive line coach, adding the title of defensive coordinator for the 2020 campaign. He was the Cleveland Browns’ D-line coach from 2014-15.

Weaver has also made pit stops with the New York Jets (2012) and Buffalo Bills (2013). He worked at Florida and North Texas before moving up to the NFL.

Atlanta has now interviewed five potential suitors to take over for Arthur Smith, who was fired late last Sunday. Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan and 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks all virtually met with the Falcons before Evero and Weaver.

Smith, 41, went 21-30 in his three seasons as head coach. Atlanta never won a playoff game under his tenure.

Report: Panthers hire Ejiro Evero as DC

The Carolina Panthers are hiring Ejiro Evero as their defensive coordinator, NFL Network reported Sunday.

Evero, 42, held the same position last season with the Denver Broncos, who agreed to let him out of his contract.

Evero, who was also linked to the Minnesota Vikings’ vacant DC position, will join new head coach Frank Reich’s first staff in Carolina.

In his first season as the Denver DC in 2022, the Broncos finished 14th in the league in scoring defense (21.1 points per game) and seventh in total defense (320.0 yards per game).

Before joining the Broncos under former head coach Nathaniel Hackett, Evero was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Rams (2017-21), Green Bay Packers (2016) and San Francisco 49ers (2011-15).

The Panthers fired defensive coordinator Phil Snow following a Week 5 loss to the 49ers, with Al Holcomb performing those duties for the rest of the season.

Report: Vikings not permitted to interview Broncos DC

The Denver Broncos have not granted permission to the Minnesota Vikings to interview defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for the same position, Sports Illustrated reported Saturday.

The same report said Evero has spoken to new Broncos head coach Sean Payton about remaining in Denver, but he is not the only candidate for the position.

Evero, 42, is still under contract with the Broncos.

In his first season as the Denver DC in 2022, the team finished 14th in the league in scoring defense (21.1 points per game) and seventh in total defense (320.0 yards per game).

Before joining the Broncos under former head coach Nathaniel Hackett, Evero was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Rams (2017-21), Green Bay Packers (2016) and San Francisco 49ers (2011-15).

Evero is also the “top target” for the Rams’ defensive coordinator position if current DC Raheem Morris lands the Indianapolis Colts’ head coaching job, according to SI.

Broncos name Ejiro Evero defensive coordinator

The Denver Broncos announced the hiring of three assistant coaches Thursday, including new defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

The team also named Dwayne Stukes as special teams coach, completing the coordinator positions under new head coach Nathaniel Hackett. Denver also hired Marcus Dixon as defensive line coach.

All three assistant coaches were hired away from the Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams.

The Broncos previously named Justin Outten as offensive coordinator.

Evero joins the Broncos with 17 years of coaching experience, including 14 seasons in the NFL. He has spent the past five seasons with the Rams, serving as secondary coach/pass game coordinator (2021) and safeties coach (2017-20).

Evero was also a quality control coach under Dom Capers in Green Bay. Capers joined the Broncos as a senior defensive assistant.

Stukes, who has 14 years of coaching experience with six NFL teams, joins the Broncos after one season as assistant special teams coach with the Rams.
