Rams claim CB Emmanuel Forbes off waivers from Commanders

Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes is heading from Washington to Los Angeles after the Rams claimed him off waivers from the Commanders on Monday.

The Commanders cut Forbes — the 16th overall pick in the 2023 draft — on Saturday. Washington acquired star corner Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints at the trade deadline and coach Dan Quinn said Sunday the team cut Forbes because Lattimore is close to returning from a hamstring injury and making his team debut.

Forbes, 23, had one start among his six appearances for Washington this year and had seven tackles, one interception and one pass breakup. In 20 career games (seven starts) in two seasons, Forbes has 45 tackles, two picks and 12 pass breakups.

“He was a guy that we liked and had a familiarity with just based on the evaluation coming out of Mississippi State,” Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters. “And then I thought there was some good tape that he’s put out there when we’ve gone against them, particularly later in the year last year.”

The Rams improved to 6-6 on Sunday and are fighting for the NFC West title, tied for second with Arizona one game behind division leader Seattle.

Commanders release former first-round CB Emmanuel Forbes

The Washington Commanders have parted ways with a player they invested a first-round draft pick in just a year ago, releasing defensive back Emmanuel Forbes Jr. on Saturday.

The Mississippi State product was the No. 16 overall pick in 2023, but he has had trouble finding consistent playing time in parts of two NFL seasons. Forbes, 23, has appeared in just six games this season, with one start, one interception and seven tackles.

For his career, Forbes has seven starts over 20 games, with two interceptions and 45 tackles.

The Commanders traded for four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore in early November, though Lattimore has been slow to recover from a hamstring injury. He was limited in practice this week and isn’t expected to play Sunday.

On Saturday, the Commanders also placed running back Austin Ekeler on injured reserve.

Ekeler, 29, joined Washington this offseason after seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. A spot starter with 355 yards and four touchdowns rushing this season, Ekeler has rushed for more than 4,700 yards in his career and has an additional 4,230 receiving yards, with 73 total touchdowns.

Washington also elevated defensive tackle Carl Davis and kicker Zane Gonzalez from the practice squad.

Commanders CB Emmanuel Forbes has surgery, out vs. Giants

Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. will not be placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his right thumb Friday, coach Dan Quinn said.

Forbes posted on his Instagram account that “surgery went well” to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

The injury occurred in the Commanders’ 37-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Forbes made four tackles.

Quinn said Forbes will miss the team’s home opener against the New York Giants (0-1) on Sunday. If Forbes was to go on injured reserve, he is required to miss at least four games.

He was a full participant on Wednesday and limited at practice on Thursday. Quinn said earlier this week that Forbes will wear a splint to protect the thumb.

The Commanders selected Forbes with the No. 16 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.

Forbes, 23, made 38 tackles, defended 11 passes and had one interception in 14 games (six starts) in his rookie season.
