WR Emmanuel Sanders retiring after 12 seasons

Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is retiring after 12 seasons and more than 10,000 yards.

The Denver Broncos scheduled a retirement news conference for the 35-year-old veteran on Wednesday.

Sanders caught 704 passes for 9,245 yards and 51 touchdowns in 172 games with the Pittsburgh Steelers, (2010-13), Broncos (2014-19), San Francisco 49ers (2019), New Orleans Saints (2020) and Buffalo Bills (2021).

“I gave it my all. Every single rep, every single play, I tried to go 100 percent as hard as I can,” Sanders said in a video posted on social media by the Broncos. “And that’s why I can hang my hat and say I gave the game everything I had and the game gave it back to me.”

He made both Pro Bowls (2014, 2016), posted three straight 1,000-yard seasons (2014-16) and won Super Bowl 50 during his time with the Broncos. He also played in Super Bowls XLV and LIV with the Steelers and 49ers, respectively.

Sanders also rushed for 202 yards and one touchdown and gained 1,083 yards on kickoff returns and 287 on punt returns, finishing with 10,817 all-purpose yards.

Pittsburgh picked him in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of SMU, where the Texas native piled up 3,791 yards and 34 touchdowns from 2006-09.

Bills come to terms with ex-Saints WR Emmanuel Sanders

Emmanuel Sanders got a birthday present Wednesday — an aggrement on a brand-new contract on a probable Super Bowl contender.

On the same day the 11-year veteran wideout turned 34, Sanders came to terms with the Buffalo Bills on a one-year contract worth a reported $6 million. The New Orleans Saints released him from his contract earlier in the day.

Sanders is expected to travel to Buffalo for a physical on Thursday. He joins the NFL’s second-highest scoring offense from a season ago (31.3 points per game), led by quarterback Josh Allen and receiver Stefon Diggs.

In his lone season in New Orleans last season, Sanders caught 61 passes for 726 yards and five touchdowns — adding another eight receptions for 51 yards over two playoff games.

He previously played four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2010-13) and five-plus seasons with the Denver Broncos (2014-19) before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers for the second half of the 2019 season.

Sanders has 662 receptions for 8,619 yards and 47 touchdowns while recording three 1,000-yard seasons in his 11-year career, all with the Broncos. He has played in three Super Bowls for three different organizations, wining a ring with Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in 2015 while losing in 2011 with the Pittsburgh Steelers and 2019 with the 49ers.

In other moves Wednesday, the Bills agreed to trade tight end Lee Smith to the Atlanta Falcons for a seventh-round pick in 2022. Smith, 33, has played six of his previous 10 seasons with Buffalo in two separate stints (2010-14, ’19-20).

The team also announced it tendered a contract offer to restricted free agent offensive lineman Ike Boettger. The 26-year-old, former undrafted free agent (Iowa) started seven of his 12 games last season, also earning three playoff starts in 2020.

Later the Bills also revealed they have to re-sign cornerback Levi Wallace. Originally an undrafted free agent out of Alabama in 2018, the 25-year-old has started all of his 35 games played over his three NFL seasons with the Bills, with 16 starts in 2019 and 12 last season. He posted 48 tackles and two interceptions in 2020.
