49ers RT Colton McKivitz gets 1-year, $7M extension

The San Francisco 49ers signed right tackle Colton McKivitz to a one-year, $7 million extension, his agents said Friday.

According to his representatives at AMDG Sports, 65 percent of that compensation is fully guaranteed.

McKivitz, 27, started all 20 games for the NFC champion 49ers in 2023, including the postseason.

He has played 45 regular season games (22 starts) since San Francisco drafted him in the fifth round in 2020.

The extension announced on Friday covers the 2025 campaign. McKivitz is set to earn $2.525 million in base salary in 2024.

Report: College Football Playoff, ESPN reach $7.8B extension

The College Football Playoff agreed to a six-year extension of its broadcast deal with ESPN worth $7.8 billion, The Athletic reported on Monday.

The deal keeps all CFP games on ESPN’s family of networks through the 2031 season, concluding with the national title game in January 2032.

However, the contract won’t be ratified until CFP leadership irons out the format of the tournament going forward.

The playoff will expand from four to 12 teams for the first time next year, and the original agreement was to include the six highest-ranked conference champions and the six highest-ranked at-large teams — the so-called 6+6 model.

With the Pac-12 set to fold following the current season, the number of power conferences shrinks, and some league commissioners are pushing to modify the format to 5+7, which most likely would keep the field at one “Group of Five” conference champion.

The extension kicks in for the 2026 season, but for the next two years ESPN still controls the rights to all games, including the new first round and quarterfinals.

According to the report, ESPN will have the right to “sublicense” CFP games over the course of the contract to other media organizations or streamers.

Rutgers extends Greg Schiano’s deal through 2030

Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano agreed to a contract extension through the 2030 season on Wednesday.

The Scarlet Knights’ all-time wins leader is 86-95 in two stints with the program (2001-11, 2020-present).

“This is a great day for Rutgers Athletics,” athletic director Pat Hobbs said in a news release. “In four years, Coach Schiano has transformed our program, this year resulting in bowl eligibility. Continuity is critical in building winning programs. We have the right leader and the right staff to lead the Scarlet Knights in the years ahead.”

Schiano will earn $6.25 million in 2024 under the new contract.

Schiano, 57, has guided Rutgers to eight bowl games, including the Dec. 28 Pinstripe Bowl against Miami (FL).

The Scarlet Knights lost four straight to finish the 2023 regular season at 6-6, including 3-6 in the Big Ten.

“I would like to thank President (Jonathan) Holloway, Athletic Director Pat Hobbs, the Board of Governors and our entire team for their continued belief in what we are building,” said Schiano. “Rutgers is home to my family and me, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build a championship program right here in New Jersey.”

Schiano left Rutgers after the 2011 season to become head coach of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was 11-21 during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

He returned to college football as the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Ohio State from 2016-18 before returning to Rutgers ahead of the 2020 season.

DE Montez Sweat, Bears agree to 4-year, $98M extension

The Chicago Bears and newly acquired defensive end Montez Sweat have agreed to a four-year, $98 million deal, which includes nearly $73 million in guaranteed money, NFL Network reported Saturday.

The Washington Commanders traded Sweat to the Bears at the trade deadline on Tuesday for a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft

The new deal, with an annual average value of $24.5 million, puts him among the elite earners at the position. Currently, only San Francisco’s Nick Bosa ($34 million) and Cleveland’s Myles Garrett ($25 million) earn more.

Sweat, 27, has recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games this season and is one of seven players with at least 5.0 sacks in each of the past five seasons.
He also has 32 tackles and two forced fumbles this season.

“What’s unique about him is that he’s one heck of a pass rusher, but he also – talking to the guys that have played against him in the building and just watching his tape – he’s a really good run player and plays with a great motor,” Bears coach Matt Eberflus said of Sweat. “He’s a great practice player, just talking to the guys that have been with him.

“He’s going to fit right into our culture in terms of working, and your best players got to be your hardest workers.”

Washington selected Sweat with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2019 draft. He is playing this season on an $11.5 million fifth-year option, and Chicago had the cap space to offer him a big extension.

Sweat has 197 tackles, 35.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles in 67 career games, all starts.

After a torn left ACL limited him to nine games in 2022, the 25-year-old Gary has played in all seven games (three starts) for the Packers (2-5) this season. He has recorded 4.5 sacks, 15 tackles and eight quarterback hits.

In 63 career games (32 starts) in Green Bay, Gary has 27 sacks, 150 tackles, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

RT Terence Steele, Cowboys agree on $86.8M deal

Right tackle Terence Steele has agreed to a five-year, $86.8 million contract extension that includes guarantees of $50 million, ESPN reported Sunday.

Per the report, the agreement could be worth as much as $91.8 million, a figure that his agent, Erik Burkhardt of Roc Nation Sports, confirmed to ESPN.

At the base value, the contract is worth $17.36 million in annual average value. Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles is the highest-paid right tackle per season in the NFL at $20.18 million, per Spotrac.

Steele, an undrafted free agent from Texas Tech, signed with the Cowboys in May 2020. This past March, he was assigned a one-year, $4.3 million tender by the Cowboys. He was due to become a free agent in 2024.

It’s the latest big deal for the Cowboys, who since the start of the league year in March have signed cornerback Trevon Diggs (five years, $86.8 million) and guard Zack Martin (two years, $36.85 million) to contracts. Running back Tony Pollard also is playing on the franchise tag worth $10.09 million for the 2023 season.

Owner Jerry Jones is going to need to dig further into the bank account in the coming months. Quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are eligible for extensions, and linebacker Micah Parsons will command a huge contract when he becomes extension-eligible in 2024.

Steele, 26, has played in 45 games (40 starts) for the Cowboys. He tore an ACL in Week 13 last season against the Houston Texans, and coach Mike McCarthy has said Steele will be ready for Week 1 when the Cowboys visit the New York Giants next Sunday night.

Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson agrees to contract extension

Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson agreed to terms on a contract extension Thursday.

Terms were not disclosed, but multiple reports said the deal makes Hockenson one of the NFL’s highest-paid tight ends.

He was entering the final year of his rookie contract and was slated to earn $9.329 million on his fifth-year option.

“He fits our culture,” Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said Thursday. “He’s the type of player we want in Minnesota.”

Hockenson, 26, caught 60 passes for 519 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games with Minnesota last season after being acquired in a trade deadline deal with Detroit.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection has registered 246 receptions for 2,587 yards and 18 touchdowns in 57 games (49 starts) since the Lions made him the No. 8 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Hockenson had been “holding in” this preseason while working on a long-term extension.

The NFL’s highest-paid tight ends, per Spotrac, are San Francisco’s George Kittle ($15 million average annual value), Kansas City’s Travis Kelce ($14.3 million), Philadelphia’s Dallas Goedert ($14.25 million) and Baltimore’s Mark Andrews ($14 million).
