Report: Eagles WR DeVonta Smith next in line for payday

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith is a “strong candidate” for a massive contract extension, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The Eagles already have locked up offensive linemen Landon Dickerson (four years, $84 million) and Jordan Mailata (three years, $66 million) to long-term deals this offseason. Smith appears to be next in line, per the report.

Smith, 25, has tallied 240 catches for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns in 50 games (49 starts) since being drafted 10th overall in 2021 out of Alabama, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2020.

He set a career high with 95 catches in 2022 and posted his second straight 1,000-yard season with 1,066 in 2023.

“DeVonta is an incredible person, incredible player; obviously homegrown, young guy,” general manager Howie Roseman said at the scouting combine in February when asked about signing Smith to an extension this offseason. “Without getting into specifics, those are guys you don’t really want to leave.”

Smith is expected to command a new deal worth $25 million or more per season, per ESPN. Wideout Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins has a top average annual salary of $30 million, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders’ Davante Adams ($28 million), the Los Angeles Rams’ Cooper Kupp ($26.7 million) and Eagles teammate A.J. Brown ($25 million).

Smith is due a base salary of $1.055 million in 2024 with a cap hit of $6.4 million. The Eagles have until May 2 to exercise the fifth-year option on Smith’s rookie contract, estimated to be worth $16 million for the 2025 season, per Spotrac.

Reports: S Kyle Dugger, Patriots agree to 4-year extension

The New England Patriots and star safety Kyle Dugger have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension, multiple media outlets reported Sunday.

Per reports, Dugger will receive a base value of $58 million for the contract, and the deal could be worth up to $66 million. It includes $32.5 million in guarantees.

Dugger, 28, received the transition tag from the Patriots last month. The tag allowed the Patriots to match any offer from another team.

Dugger recorded a career-best 109 tackles to go with two interceptions and 1.5 sacks in 17 games (all starts).

He has totaled 343 tackles, nine interceptions and 2.5 sacks in 61 career games (52 starts) since being selected by New England in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Eagles G Landon Dickerson gets record 4-year extension

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Landon Dickerson to a four-year extension Monday that reportedly makes him the highest-paid guard in NFL history.

NFL Network and ESPN said the two-time Pro Bowl left guard’s deal is worth $84 million and includes $50 million guaranteed and a $20 million signing bonus.

Dickerson’s average annual salary of $21 million would exceed the $20.5 million earned by Atlanta Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom.

Terms were not officially disclosed by the Eagles, which rushed to lock up an important member of their offensive line following last week’s retirement of center Jason Kelce.

“Not Going ANYWHERE!” tweeted Dickerson, who was entering the final season of his rookie contract.

Dickerson, 25, made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and 2023 and has started 46 of his 47 games since Philadelphia drafted him in the second round in 2021.

49ers RT Colton McKivitz gets 1-year, $7M extension

The San Francisco 49ers signed right tackle Colton McKivitz to a one-year, $7 million extension, his agents said Friday.

According to his representatives at AMDG Sports, 65 percent of that compensation is fully guaranteed.

McKivitz, 27, started all 20 games for the NFC champion 49ers in 2023, including the postseason.

He has played 45 regular season games (22 starts) since San Francisco drafted him in the fifth round in 2020.

Report: College Football Playoff, ESPN reach $7.8B extension

The College Football Playoff agreed to a six-year extension of its broadcast deal with ESPN worth $7.8 billion, The Athletic reported on Monday.

The deal keeps all CFP games on ESPN’s family of networks through the 2031 season, concluding with the national title game in January 2032.

However, the contract won’t be ratified until CFP leadership irons out the format of the tournament going forward.

The playoff will expand from four to 12 teams for the first time next year, and the original agreement was to include the six highest-ranked conference champions and the six highest-ranked at-large teams — the so-called 6+6 model.

With the Pac-12 set to fold following the current season, the number of power conferences shrinks, and some league commissioners are pushing to modify the format to 5+7, which most likely would keep the field at one “Group of Five” conference champion.

The extension kicks in for the 2026 season, but for the next two years ESPN still controls the rights to all games, including the new first round and quarterfinals.

According to the report, ESPN will have the right to “sublicense” CFP games over the course of the contract to other media organizations or streamers.

Rutgers extends Greg Schiano’s deal through 2030

Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano agreed to a contract extension through the 2030 season on Wednesday.

The Scarlet Knights’ all-time wins leader is 86-95 in two stints with the program (2001-11, 2020-present).

“This is a great day for Rutgers Athletics,” athletic director Pat Hobbs said in a news release. “In four years, Coach Schiano has transformed our program, this year resulting in bowl eligibility. Continuity is critical in building winning programs. We have the right leader and the right staff to lead the Scarlet Knights in the years ahead.”

Schiano will earn $6.25 million in 2024 under the new contract.

Schiano, 57, has guided Rutgers to eight bowl games, including the Dec. 28 Pinstripe Bowl against Miami (FL).

The Scarlet Knights lost four straight to finish the 2023 regular season at 6-6, including 3-6 in the Big Ten.

“I would like to thank President (Jonathan) Holloway, Athletic Director Pat Hobbs, the Board of Governors and our entire team for their continued belief in what we are building,” said Schiano. “Rutgers is home to my family and me, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build a championship program right here in New Jersey.”

Schiano left Rutgers after the 2011 season to become head coach of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was 11-21 during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

He returned to college football as the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Ohio State from 2016-18 before returning to Rutgers ahead of the 2020 season.

DE Montez Sweat, Bears agree to 4-year, $98M extension

The Chicago Bears and newly acquired defensive end Montez Sweat have agreed to a four-year, $98 million deal, which includes nearly $73 million in guaranteed money, NFL Network reported Saturday.

The Washington Commanders traded Sweat to the Bears at the trade deadline on Tuesday for a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft

The new deal, with an annual average value of $24.5 million, puts him among the elite earners at the position. Currently, only San Francisco’s Nick Bosa ($34 million) and Cleveland’s Myles Garrett ($25 million) earn more.

Sweat, 27, has recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games this season and is one of seven players with at least 5.0 sacks in each of the past five seasons.
He also has 32 tackles and two forced fumbles this season.

“What’s unique about him is that he’s one heck of a pass rusher, but he also – talking to the guys that have played against him in the building and just watching his tape – he’s a really good run player and plays with a great motor,” Bears coach Matt Eberflus said of Sweat. “He’s a great practice player, just talking to the guys that have been with him.

“He’s going to fit right into our culture in terms of working, and your best players got to be your hardest workers.”

Washington selected Sweat with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2019 draft. He is playing this season on an $11.5 million fifth-year option, and Chicago had the cap space to offer him a big extension.

Sweat has 197 tackles, 35.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles in 67 career games, all starts.

LB Rashan Gary signs 4-year, $107.5M extension with Packers

Rashan Gary signed a four-year, $107.5 million contract extension to remain with the Green Bay Packers through the 2027 season.

The outside linebacker announced the deal on Monday through his Rashan Gary Sports agency.

Gary’s social media post said he will receive a $34.65 million signing bonus.

Gary, the No. 12 overall pick in 2019, initially signed a four-year, $15.9 million rookie contract and is playing on his fifth-year, $10.9 million option.

After a torn left ACL limited him to nine games in 2022, the 25-year-old Gary has played in all seven games (three starts) for the Packers (2-5) this season. He has recorded 4.5 sacks, 15 tackles and eight quarterback hits.

He has been on a limited snap count so far this season.

In 63 career games (32 starts) in Green Bay, Gary has 27 sacks, 150 tackles, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Report: Patriots’ Bill Belichick signed long-term deal in offseason

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick signed a multi-year contract extension during the offseason, NFL Network reported on Sunday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed for Belichick, whose Patriots have lost three in a row to fall to 1-5 on the season. New England has missed the playoffs in two of the past three seasons, leading to questions being raised about his future with the team.

Belichick, 71, has won six Super Bowl titles since becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2000. The Patriots have missed the playoffs just five times in his 23 seasons prior to this campaign.

His 299 regular-season coaching victories — accumulated with the Cleveland Browns (36) and Patriots (263) — entering Sunday’s games are third-most all-time in NFL history behind Hall of Fame members Don Shula (328) and George Halas (318).

The Patriots host the Buffalo Bills (4-2) on Sunday in Foxborough, Mass.
