New York Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke (58) goes after Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (1) just before sacking him in the second quarter, Sunday, January 7, 2024.

Report: Eagles QB Jalen Hurts’ middle finger not broken

X-rays showed no fracture to the middle finger of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts’ throwing hand, NFL Network reported Monday.

Hurts has an extra day to recover as the free-falling Eagles prepare to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an NFC wild-card game next Monday night.

The Eagles pulled Hurts from Sunday’s game against the New York Giants while trailing by 24 points late in the first half. Philadelphia’s 27-10 loss was its fifth in six games following a 10-1 start.

Hurts was hurt in the first minute of the second quarter when Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke struck him as he was getting rid of the ball. Hurts immediately grabbed his hand and later flashed his awkwardly bent finger.

Hurts stayed in the game but was largely ineffective. He was intercepted by Xavier McKinney with 1:28 remaining in the half and when Philadelphia got the ball back 23 seconds later, Marcus Mariota entered at quarterback.

Hurts, 25, set career highs in passing yards (3,858), touchdown passes (23), interceptions (15) and rushing scores (15) this season.

Reports: Chargers QB Justin Herbert fractured finger in win

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert finished Sunday’s game with what he described as a “flesh wound” that turned out to be a fractured finger on his left hand.

According to multiple reports, Herbert won’t need surgery and should be ready to play when Los Angeles returns from a bye to host the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 16.

The Chargers (2-2) beat the Las Vegas Raiders 24-17 to regain their footing after starting the season 0-2. But the offense made major modifications to accommodate Herbert, who had two rushing touchdowns and a career-low 167 passing yards. Other than a failed quarterback sneak, every snap after his injury was out of the shotgun or modified pistol formation.

Herbert was injured tracking down cornerback Tre’von Moehrig following an interception. He was checked out by trainers, who bandaged his finger and offered him a protective glove, then cleared him to return to the game. Herbert was wearing a split on his finger after the game.

The injury to Herbert’s finger also caused displacement on the fingernail, he said.

“It is but a scratch. Just a flesh wound,” Herbert said Sunday night.

Herbert, who finished the game wearing a white glove on his left hand, has never missed a game in the NFL. He said the pain during the game was tolerable but trainers and medical staff would have input on when he’s back on the field.

“I don’t have all the information right now,” Herbert said. “If I was able to go back out there, and the doctors and trainers felt like it was safe, I’m sure it’s up to their hands. I’ve always felt really safe and comfortable with them working out. We’ll see what they have to say.”

Reports: Seahawks S Jamal Adams has broken left middle finger

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams was diagnosed with a broken left middle finger, according to multiple reports on Friday.

Adams complained of soreness in multiple fingers on his left hand after Wednesday’s first training camp practice. Adams apparently got the middle finger twisted in a teammate’s facemask during the no-contact practice.

He was away from the team Thursday and reportedly got the hand examined in Dallas by the surgeon who performed surgery on his middle and ring fingers this offseason.

According to the Seattle Times, Adams is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season and might wear a hand cast during games to protect the injury. He may require surgery after the season.

During minicamp in June, Adams stated that he has dislocated both fingers at least 10 times.

The three-time Pro Bowl selection said that during the offseason, his fingers were fused at an angle in which he can no longer bend the hand into a fist.

“It’s for the love of the game,” Adams said during a press conference last month. “Been going through that for two years now. My first year when I got here, I dislocated my ring finger probably about 10 times, and the other one probably about … 12.”

Adams, 26, is entering his third season with the Seahawks. He missed nine games due to injuries in his first two campaigns.

Last season, he missed the final five games with a left shoulder injury and underwent a procedure on his the shoulder for the second straight offseason.

The LSU product spent his first three NFL seasons with the New York Jets before being traded to Seattle prior to the 2020 season.

Adams, known as a strong blitzer, has 21.5 career sacks but didn’t record a single one last season in 12 appearances. He has recorded seven forced fumbles, four interceptions and 443 tackles in 70 NFL games.

Adams is entering the first season of a four-year, $70.6 million deal.

Saints DE Marcus Davenport reveals partial finger amputation

New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport had offseason surgery to amputate part of his left pinkie finger, he told reporters Wednesday.

He said he expects to be healthy for training camp in July.

An infection from a previous surgery forced the amputation. Davenport, 25, also had right-shoulder surgery in January.

Davenport, entering his fifth NFL season, said he had tore ligaments in the finger while playing at UTSA in 2016. He finally had surgery on it in 2021 to straighten it, which required inserting a plate.

When the plate broke during the offseason, an infection set in and the top of the finger was removed.

The Saints selected Davenport with the 14th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 48 games (23 starts) and has 113 tackles (23 for loss), 52 quarterback hits, seven forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 21 sacks, including a career-high nine in 2021.

The Saints picked up Davenport’s fifth-year option, worth $9.55 million, despite his injury history. He has missed 17 regular-season games with varied injuries that include to his shoulder, foot, toe and elbow.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor talks with quarterback Joe Burrow (9) as they head for the locker room after the second quarter of the NFL Week 13 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Chargers at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021. The Chargers led 24-13 at halftime.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow pushing through pinky injury

Joe Burrow has plans, provided the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback gets his dislocated right pinky to cooperate.

Burrow intends to take the practice field Wednesday and throw for the first time since he was hurt in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

“We’ll have to see. I’m going to try some things in practice this week to see what works best,” Burrow said of figuring out an effective pain management plan.

Wearing a glove was one option, but Burrow decided it was “too hard to get them on, too painful to get them on.”

On Sunday, the Bengals (7-5) host the San Francisco 49ers (6-6) and Burrow’s college pal, former Ohio State pass rusher Nick Bosa. Bosa vowed to sack Burrow since he transferred out of Ohio State to LSU.

With five games left in the regular season — all against teams with at least a .500 record — the Bengals are a game behind the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens. Cincinnati has games remaining with Baltimore, Denver, Kansas City and Cleveland after hosting the 49ers.

Burrow, who turns 25 on Friday, said “at least a little bit” of practice Wednesday is the goal, with the idea of graduating from there.

He said he “doesn’t foresee” a scenario in which he misses Sunday’s game.

Expected to be a top target for No. 1 draft pick Trevor Lawrence, Chark made the Pro Bowl in 2019 and led the Jaguars in receiving yards last season.

Jacksonville opens the season on the road against the Houston Texans on Sept. 12.

Chark, 24, had 53 catches for 706 yards and five touchdowns in 2020 and has 140 career receptions for 1,888 yards and 13 scores in 39 games (26 starts).

The 2018 second-round pick is entering the final season of his four-year rookie deal and is due to earn $2.2 million in 2021.

Arians: Bucs RB Jones may have broken his pinkie

Tampa Bay running back Ronald Jones may have broken his pinkie finger in Sunday’s game, Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said Monday.

Jones apparently suffered the injury in the first half but didn’t miss any action, finishing with 18 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown in the Bucs’ 26-14 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

“Whether they have to put a pin in it or not, we have to wait and see,” Arians told reporters. “I don’t know what that will do. Chris [Godwin] played through it and we’ll see what happens with him. I think that’s about it as far as anything that could be major.”

The Bucs (8-5) are scheduled to play at the Atlanta Falcons (4-9) this Sunday.

Jones is No. 4 in the NFL with 900 yards rushing on the season to go with six touchdowns. He’s averaging 5.0 yards a carry. He also has 28 receptions for 165 yards and a score.
