Lions rule out C Frank Ragnow (pectoral) vs. Seahawks

The Detroit Lions ruled out three-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow for their home game against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said earlier in the week that Ragnow was pushing to play versus Seattle despite sustaining a partially torn pectoral muscle during Detroit’s 20-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Ragnow, in fact, played through the injury while lining up for all 68 offensive snaps against the Cardinals.

“We’re going to put Frank down this week,” Campbell said Thursday. “So I’ll go ahead and get that out of the way. We can go round and round if we want. We’re not going to mess with that. Look, Frank’s tough. I mean, he’s as tough as nails. If anybody can play through it, it’s him. I think we got to be smart. It’s early in the year. We got a lot of football left.”

Left guard Graham Glasgow likely will move to center to replace Ragnow for the Lions (2-1), who have a bye week following the game against the Seahawks (3-0).

Ragnow, 28, has started all three games this season and all 83 contests in which he has played since being selected by the Lions with the 20th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Also Thursday, the Lions signed wide receiver Allen Robinson to the active roster and linebacker Abraham Beauplan to the practice squad.

Robinson, 31, caught 34 passes for 280 yards with no touchdowns in 17 games (all starts) last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was released March 8 after one season in Pittsburgh in a money-saving move.

The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Robinson in the second round in 2014, and he spent four seasons there before moving on to the Chicago Bears (2017-21), Los Angeles Rams (2022), Steelers (2023) and Lions.

Robinson has 562 catches for 7,028 yards and 43 touchdowns in his career. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 when he tallied 1,400 receiving yards, the first of his three 1,000-yard seasons.

Lions coach: ‘Stubborn’ Frank Ragnow wants to play through pec injury

Three-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow sustained a partially torn pectoral muscle during the Detroit Lions’ 20-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Ragnow, however, is intent on playing in the Lions’ next game on Monday against the visiting Seattle Seahawks, coach Dan Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket in Southfield, Mich.

“First of all, Frank is stubborn. He’s hard-headed Frank. He’s tough, he’s stubborn, so he wants to go, and he always wants to go, but this is something we’re still talking about right now,” Campbell said. “I’m not entirely sure what we’re gonna do with him.”

Campbell said Ragnow played through the injury while lining up for all 68 offensive snaps against the Cardinals.

“A lot of it is where’s he going to feel by middle or end of the week,” Campbell said. “But he does have something in there and he did play through some of this last week. And so we’ll do what’s best for him and what’s best for us in the moment, ultimately. But you know how I feel about Frank, we all do. Appreciate the heck out of him. He’s tough, man.”

Ragnow, 28, has started all three games this season and all 83 contests in which he has played since being selected by the Lions with the 20th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Detroit Lions defensive end Marcus Davenport (92) pressures Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (9) during the first half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

Lions’ Marcus Davenport (triceps) likely to miss rest of season

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell announced Monday that defensive end Marcus Davenport is likely out for the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury he sustained in Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The nature of the injury is a torn triceps, ESPN reported. Campbell added that the 28-year-old was looking into other options regarding the treatment of the injury.

The Lions signed Davenport via free agency in March to a one-year deal worth $7.095 million. He recorded a half-sack in Week 1 vs. the Rams, then sat out Week 2 due to a groin injury.

This is Davenport’s seventh season in the league, having played his first five years with the New Orleans Saints and last year with the Minnesota Vikings. His most productive season was in 2021, when he finished with nine sacks, 39 tackles, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 11 games.

Injuries have hindered Davenport throughout his career. After being selected with the 14th pick in the 2018 draft, he played in just 63 games in his five seasons in New Orleans and just four games last season in Minnesota.

His is one of many injuries that the Lions, who advanced to the NFC Championship Game last season, are dealing with.

Campbell said Monday linebacker Derrick Barnes will be out “a significant amount of time” with a knee injury he suffered Sunday. Meanwhile, three-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow reportedly sustained a torn pectoral muscle Sunday and is considered week-to-week.

Tight end Sam LaPorta, who was named a Pro Bowler last year in his rookie season, was carted off with an ankle injury. The team is saying he’s day-to-day with a low ankle sprain.

Safety Brian Branch, another player who emerged as a rookie last season, is also day-to-day with a concussion. Campbell said Branch is in the protocol but “was doing pretty good.”

Despite multiple injuries, Lions C Frank Ragnow set to play Sunday

Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow apparently isn’t going to let injuries to his knee, ankle, toe and back keep him out of Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers.

He’s been listed on the injury report with those ailments this week and missed practice sessions Wednesday and Thursday. But head coach Dan Campbell told reporters Friday that Ragnow will be on the field Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif.

“He’s good,” Campbell said before practice on Friday. “You know Frank. Frank’s doing well. And Frank will be ready to go. I mean, you’re not going to hold him out of this one. And he gets better every day. So, he’ll be ready.”

Ragnow, 27, returned to practice Friday with a sleeve on his left leg. He suffered a sprained knee and ankle in the NFC divisional game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend but didn’t miss a snap.

The Lions selected Ragnow with the 20th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Since then, he’s appeared in 80 games (all starts), including 15 this season. Injuries limited the three-time Pro Bowl selection to just four games in 2021.

Guard Jonah Jackson (knee) and wide receiver Kalif Raymond (knee) remained out of practice on Friday and aren’t likely to play.

Lions C Frank Ragnow (calf, toe) to sit out practice Saturday

Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow will miss his third straight practice on Saturday due to calf and toe injuries, raising questions about his availability for Monday’s game against the visiting Las Vegas Raiders.

Lions coach Dan Campbell told reporters Saturday that it’s “hard to say” if Ragnow will compete versus Las Vegas. Graham Glasgow will move over center and Kayode Awosika could get the nod at left guard should Ragnow sit out against the Raiders.

Detroit’s final injury report will be released later on Saturday.

A Pro Bowl selection in 2020 and 2022, Ragnow has started all 72 games in which he has appeared with the Lions.

Ragnow, 27, was selected by Detroit with the 20th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Frank Ragnow (groin) joins list of injured OL for Lions

Detroit Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow (groin) did not participate in practice on Thursday and could miss the Lions’ season-opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The offensive line was supposed to be a position of strength for the Lions in 2022. However, Tommy Kraemer (back) also was a DNP again on Thursday and fellow guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai has already been placed on injured reserve with a back injury.

Ragnow injured his groin during Wednesday’s practice. Evan Brown took snaps at center Thursday and is in line to replace Ragnow, if he’s unable to go. Brown started 12 games at center in 2021 in place of Ragnow.

Backup Logan Stenberg is a candidate to replace Vaitai at right guard after playing left guard exclusively during the preseason.

Vaitai has to miss at least four games before he can return.

Reports: Lions C Frank Ragnow to have season-ending surgery

Detroit Lions Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow will have season-ending surgery on his injured toe, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

Ragnow was placed on injured reserve after suffering the toe injury in Week 4. The hope was that it would be a short-term stay on IR, with Ragnow returning at some point this season.

Ragnow, 25, became the NFL’s highest-paid center in May after signing a four-year contract extension worth $13.5 million per season.

Ragnow has started 49 games since being selected by the Lions with the 20th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. A Pro Bowl selection in 2020, Ragnow missed two games last season with a fractured throat.

The Lions (0-5) host the Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) on Sunday.

The Detroit Lions placed Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow on injured reserve Wednesday.

Ragnow, who is nursing an ailing toe, will miss at least the next three games for the winless Lions (0-4). He sustained the injury during the first half of Detroit’s 24-14 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday and joins star left tackle Taylor Decker (left index finger) on injured reserve.

Also on Wednesday, Detroit activated kicker Austin Seibert from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Seibert has missed the team’s past two games.

The Lions also signed linebacker Jessie Lemonier to the active roster from the practice squad.

Report: Lions make Frank Ragnow highest-paid center

The Detroit Lions and Frank Ragnow are in agreement on a four-year contract extension that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid center, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

NFL Network said the extension is worth just under $70 million and his average annual salary will be $13.5 million.

Ragnow, who turns 25 on May 17, already was under contract for the next two seasons after the Lions picked up his fifth-year option last week.

A first-round pick (20th overall) in 2018 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2020, Ragnow has started a possible 45 of 48 games in his first three seasons. He missed two games last December with a fractured throat.

Ragnow did not allow any sacks and drew only two penalties while playing 928 offensive snaps in 2020.

Los Angeles Chargers center Corey Linsley previously was the highest-paid player at his position. He signed a five-year, $62.5 million deal in March for an average annual salary of $12.5 million.
