Myles Garrett sets NFL sack mark as Browns edge Bengals

CINCINNATI — Myles Garrett had to wait until the final moments of the season finale to set the NFL single-season sack record, but it was Cleveland’s kicker that won the game as time expired to lift the Browns to a 20-18 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Andre Szmyt, who missed a short field goal and an extra point against Cincinnati in the season opener, won the game with a 49-yard field goal as time expired. By contrast, Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson missed a pair of extra points that turned out to be the difference.

Garrett got his record-setting sack on a day when his defensive teammates added a pair of touchdowns. With 22 sacks after 16 games, Garrett needed one sack to pass Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt (22.5) for the single-season record.

With 5:04 left in the fourth quarter, Garrett rushed up the middle and Burrow slid to the turf for his 23rd sack. The Cleveland sideline rushed onto the field to congratulate Garrett, delaying the game for a minute.

Trailing 17-12 late, Burrow led the Bengals on a seven-play, 61-yard drive, capped by a 4-yard scoring strike to Ja’Marr Chase in the left side of the end zone for an 18-17 lead with 1:29 left. Chase finished with a game-high eight receptions for 96 yards.

Rookie Shedeur Sanders completed 11 of 22 passes for just 111 yards but improved to 3-4 as a starter for the Browns (5-12), who finished with back-to-back wins against AFC North rivals. The Browns, who struggled offensively all afternoon, lost starting center Luke Wypler to a knee injury.

Joe Burrow completed 29 of 39 passes for 236 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Chase Brown reached the 1,000-yard rushing milestone for the first time and caught a scoring pass for the Bengals (6-11).

The Bengals appeared to be in line for another easy day before the home crowd when Burrow found a wide-open Brown for a 4-yard score in the flat. The touchdown, followed by a blocked extra point, was set up by Cam Sample’s strip-sack of Sanders and Howard Cross’ recovery at the Cleveland 29.

Needing 53 yards for a 1,000-yard campaign, Brown concluded his best season to date with 72 yards on 13 carries.

Cleveland’s Devin Bush returned a Burrow interception 97 yards for a first-quarter score in the final minute of the first quarter. Then, a minute into the second, Sam Webb recovered Noah Fant’s fumble and scored on a 47-yard return for a 14-6 lead.

Tee Higgins caught a 13-yard TD pass from Burrow shortly before halftime to pull the Bengals within 14-12. McPherson then missed his second extra point.

Browns top cornerback Denzel Ward sustained a neck injury in the first half and did not return.

Myles Garrett: Steelers focused more on stopping me than winning

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett said he felt like the Pittsburgh Steelers were more focused on preventing him from setting the single-season sack record than winning on Sunday.

Garrett entered Week 17 with 22 sacks — one shy of breaking the NFL record of 22.5 shared by Pro Football Hall of Fame member Michael Strahan (2001) and Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt (2021). Pittsburgh held Garrett without at least a half-sack for the first time in more than two months, but lost the game, 13-6.

With a win, the Steelers would have clinched the AFC North title. Now they face a winner-takes-all regular-season finale at home against the Baltimore Ravens.

Garrett, who had 18 sacks over his previous nine games, faced constant double-teams on Sunday. He finished with a lone tackle along with a quarterback hit and was asked if he felt like Pittsburgh placed extra emphasis on preventing him from setting the record.

“To an extent. I feel like they were more worried about keeping me away from (quarterback) Aaron (Rodgers) than, you know, getting the win, and I think that’s what came back to bite them,” Garrett said. “So, they’ll have to fight it out with Baltimore next week.

“But I’m just proud of the guys for fighting and getting this win. That’s the main thing, and I’m always going to keep it that.”

Rogers threw for 168 yards while averaging only 4.3 yards per attempt and failed to throw a touchdown. However, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said there was no more focus placed on Garrett than in any other meeting between the team.

“We didn’t do anything against Myles that we don’t normally do against Myles,” Tomlin said. “The sack records are irrelevant. We got to minimize him if we want to engineer victory. We did the same thing last time we played him. I didn’t think he had any sacks in that game either. And so, we didn’t take a different approach because of the gravity of the record. It’s just standard business when you’re playing these guys and him.”

Garrett was indeed held without a sack at Pittsburgh in Week 6, the most recent game in which he had failed to register at least a half-sack until Sunday. The Steelers have now posted two of the only four games in which Garrett has not had a sack heading into the Browns’ season finale at Cincinnati.

“Four more quarters, 60 more minutes. However you want to draw it up, it’ll get done,” Garrett said.

Report: Pass rusher Myles Garrett ‘will remain a Brown’

An NFL insider shot down trade rumors surrounding Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett on Saturday.

“Cleveland star Myles Garrett is not getting traded,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini posted on X. “Teams have checked in, but as one high-ranking source texted: ‘He’s a Brown and will remain a Brown.’”

Garrett, 29, reportedly has drawn interest this week from the Philadelphia Eagles as the Browns (2-6) are stuck in last place in the AFC North.

Garrett, a four-time All-Pro and the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, certainly would command a high price on the trade market, in the range of multiple first-round draft picks.

The defensive end demonstrated his value again last weekend with a career-high five sacks in a loss at New England. He leads the NFL with 10 sacks through eight games, his eighth straight season with double-digit sacks.

Any team trading for Garrett also would be taking on the four-year, $160 million contract extension he signed with the Browns in March.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett spoke Friday, March 14, 2025, at team headquarters in Berea, Ohio, about signing a historic contract extension. Garrett loves dinosaurs, so his media availability had a theme.

Myles Garrett signs record pact, wants to win with Browns

Five weeks passed between Myles Garrett demanding a trade and his record-setting contract extension with the Browns, a shift that settles a brief, dramatic standoff between the defensive end and the Cleveland franchise.

Garrett said Friday he demanded a trade on Feb. 3 mostly because he wanted assurances the Browns are chasing the same goals.

“I think I had some frustration and I feel like that helped us grow and have conversations that were difficult but that needed to be had and helped create a little bit more discourse, helped build some relationships and reaffirm them,” Garrett said Friday. “And now I feel like we’re in a better place and now we can move on.

“I think the fans will see that my heart is in the right place,” he continued. “It has never been about money. It’s always been about winning. That’s where my frustration lies.”

Garrett said he was at the team’s Berea, Ohio, complex to greet and help the Browns recruit free agent quarterback Russell Wilson. Cleveland also acquired Kenny Pickett, a first-round pick with the Steelers who spent last season with the Super Bowl champion Eagles.

Garrett, 29, said he wants Wilson to join the Steelers because he knows he’d “be an asset.”

How much help Cleveland can reel in before the 2025 season was impacted by the Garrett signing: his reported four-year, $160 million extension includes $123.5 million guaranteed.

But the four-time All-Pro said he felt confident Cleveland is capable of rebounding after heartfelt conversations with general manager Andrew Berry. Berry insisted there was no scenario in which trading Garrett made the Browns better. He also convinced Garrett that was the case.

Garrett, who has 102.5 sacks in 117 career regular-season games, said they’ve discussed “plans and (the) future of this team and how we can turn this around and turn Cleveland into a winner.”

The first overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft by Cleveland, Garrett said he always wanted to finish his career where it started and doesn’t regret his trade demand.

“Just like family, sometimes you fight and you have to go through things,” Garrett said. “We will get through this and we’ll come out right on the other side.”

Browns star DE Myles Garrett (foot) set to go vs. Jaguars

Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett returned to practice Friday on a limited basis and is set to go for Sunday’s game against the host Jacksonville Jaguars.

Garrett missed practice Thursday when he appeared on the Cleveland injury report with a foot issue. He said the injury didn’t occur in the Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys but he was dealing with it throughout the game.

Garrett declined to reveal how the injury initially occurred, and jokingly made a reference to Browns coach Kevin Stefanski.

“I could tell you,” Garrett said. “And get yelled at by Kevin? So, I’m OK.”

Garrett said the injury wouldn’t be an issue against the Jaguars.

“I wouldn’t say it’s something to worry about,” Garrett said. “It’s something for us to manage and I’ll be conscious of and a little cautious.”

Garrett is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 14 sacks and four fumble recoveries last season.

Meanwhile, standout Cleveland offensive tackle Jack Conklin is listed as questionable after practicing on a limited basis in all three practices this week. He hasn’t played since sustaining a serious injury to his right knee in the 2023 season opener.

Offensive tackle Jedrick Wills (knee), who underwent season-ending surgery late in the 2023 campaign, was ruled out. Tight end David Njoku was ruled out early in the week by Stefanski.

For Jacksonville, cornerback Darnell Savage (quadriceps) will sit out. Defensive end Tyler Lacy (toe) and linebacker Caleb Johnson (back) are questionable.

In Week 1, Garrett had a strip-sack during Sunday night’s 33-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Fellow defensive end Za’Darius Smith (back) also was added to the injury report and missed practice Thursday.

Standout offensive tackle Jack Conklin practiced on a limited basis for the second straight day. He hasn’t played since sustaining a serious injury to his right knee in the 2023 season opener.

Cleveland also placed cornerback Myles Harden (shin) on injured reserve.

Browns QB Deshaun Watson, DE Myles Garrett not practicing Wednesday

Quarterback Deshaun Watson remains out of action as the Cleveland Browns take the practice field Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s game with the San Francisco 49ers.

Watson and the Browns (2-2) are coming off their bye week, during which head coach Kevin Stefanski shuffled the depth chart to move PJ Walker ahead of rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

Watson is dealing with a right shoulder injury, reportedly a contusion to his rotator cuff, and reportedly could miss more than a month recovering. Injured in a Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans, he was sacked 12 times in three games.

The undefeated 49ers (5-0) have scored 30-plus points in every game this season. The Browns have allowed only 60 points this season.

If Walker starts, the former XFL standout would face off against 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was the Panthers’ defensive coordinator and then interim coach during Walker’s three seasons at Carolina. Walker was benched after Wilks briefly gave him a chance to start in 2022.

Cleveland lost at Baltimore, 28-3, prior to last week’s bye with rookie fifth-round pick Thompson-Robinson replacing Watson in the lineup.

The Browns were missing several other starters Wednesday including defensive end Myles Garrett (foot), guard Joel Bitonio (knee) and tight end David Njoku (face, hand), who is third on the team with 16 receptions.

Garrett leads the Browns with 5.5 sacks.

Browns DE Myles Garrett deemed ‘good to go’

All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett is back and he could have his sidekick when the Cleveland Browns tackle the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Garrett did not play last week while recovering from minor injuries sustained in a single-car accident days before Cleveland’s Week 4 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

“Good to go,” coach Kevin Stefanski said of Garrett. “Excited to have him back out there.”

The Browns are hopeful defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is back on the field. He practiced Friday for the first time since injuring his ankle in the Week 2 loss to the New York Jets.

“I miss playing, and I’m ready to be back,” said Clowney, who has 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Defensive tackle Taven Bryan (hamstring) also practiced on Friday and could be available, Stefanski said.

The Browns were missing all three defensive linemen last week and allowed 202 rushing yards to the Falcons.

Reports: Browns DE Myles Garrett home from hospital

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was released from the hospital late Monday night, according to reports.

Garrett and a passenger were taken by ambulance for medical attention with non-life-threatening injuries Monday after a single-vehicle crash.

NFL Network reported Tuesday that Garrett “swerved to avoid an animal on a wet road and overcorrected. Car flipped multiple times. Could’ve been worse.”

The Browns said Monday the accident occurred after Garrett, 26, left the practice facility in Berea, Ohio.

Many outlets shared post-crash images of Garrett’s 2021 Porsche, which went off the road and flipped multiple times before coming to a rest.

Details of the crash that happened at about 3 p.m. ET near Wadsworth in Ohio’s Medina County are under investigation. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed there was a female passenger in the vehicle and that both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Garrett was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and is in his sixth season with the Browns. He has recorded 61.5 sacks and 12 forced fumbles in 71 games (69 starts).

The Browns (2-1) are scheduled for an off day on Tuesday. Cleveland plays Sunday at the Atlanta Falcons (1-2).

Browns DE Myles Garrett (neck), G Joel Bitonio (biceps) miss practice

Cleveland’s pass rush is questionable for Thursday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Browns ruled defensive end Jadeveon Clowney out on Monday but All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett was an addition to the injury report with a neck injury and didn’t practice on Tuesday.

As to the likelihood Garrett, who has 61.5 sacks in 70 career games, could miss time, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said, “We’ll see.”

“We’ve talked about that player opposite Myles often gets a little bit less attention. And then with JD [Clowney] he’s another guy that teams pay attention to and he’s very disruptive. He does a great job in the run game. …. Gets great effort sacks, effort pressures. So somebody’s just got to step up and whoever next man up, we just need the best version of that person.”

Cleveland could be without injured guard Joel Bitonio (biceps) against the Steelers on a short week after he also sat out Tuesday’s practice.

Stefanski said All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin, who didn’t play the first two games, is “very, very close” to seeing game action.

Clowney is out with an ankle injury, and defensive end Chase Winovich has a hamstring injury. Winovich and tight end Jesse James (biceps) landed on injured reserve on Tuesday, meaning they’ll miss at least four games.

Clowney has six pressures and 1.5 sacks this season after returning to the Browns in free agency. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Alex Smith.

Garrett and Bitonio were hurt Sunday in the Browns’ loss to the New York Jets but finished the game. Since neither participated in Tuesday’s practice, they missed the lone full workout of the week before Thursday’s game.
