Browns star DE Myles Garrett (foot) set to go vs. Jaguars

Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett returned to practice Friday on a limited basis and is set to go for Sunday’s game against the host Jacksonville Jaguars.

Garrett missed practice Thursday when he appeared on the Cleveland injury report with a foot issue. He said the injury didn’t occur in the Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys but he was dealing with it throughout the game.

Garrett declined to reveal how the injury initially occurred, and jokingly made a reference to Browns coach Kevin Stefanski.

“I could tell you,” Garrett said. “And get yelled at by Kevin? So, I’m OK.”

Garrett said the injury wouldn’t be an issue against the Jaguars.

“I wouldn’t say it’s something to worry about,” Garrett said. “It’s something for us to manage and I’ll be conscious of and a little cautious.”

Garrett is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 14 sacks and four fumble recoveries last season.

Meanwhile, standout Cleveland offensive tackle Jack Conklin is listed as questionable after practicing on a limited basis in all three practices this week. He hasn’t played since sustaining a serious injury to his right knee in the 2023 season opener.

Offensive tackle Jedrick Wills (knee), who underwent season-ending surgery late in the 2023 campaign, was ruled out. Tight end David Njoku was ruled out early in the week by Stefanski.

For Jacksonville, cornerback Darnell Savage (quadriceps) will sit out. Defensive end Tyler Lacy (toe) and linebacker Caleb Johnson (back) are questionable.

Browns star DE Myles Garrett (foot) misses practice

Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett missed Thursday’s practice with a foot injury.

Garrett was added to the team’s injury report on Thursday after not being part of it Wednesday.

Garrett is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 14 sacks and four fumble recoveries last season.

In Week 1, Garrett had a strip-sack during Sunday night’s 33-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Fellow defensive end Za’Darius Smith (back) also was added to the injury report and missed practice Thursday.

Standout offensive tackle Jack Conklin practiced on a limited basis for the second straight day. He hasn’t played since sustaining a serious injury to his right knee in the 2023 season opener.

Cleveland also placed cornerback Myles Harden (shin) on injured reserve.

Browns QB Deshaun Watson, DE Myles Garrett not practicing Wednesday

Quarterback Deshaun Watson remains out of action as the Cleveland Browns take the practice field Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s game with the San Francisco 49ers.

Watson and the Browns (2-2) are coming off their bye week, during which head coach Kevin Stefanski shuffled the depth chart to move PJ Walker ahead of rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

Watson is dealing with a right shoulder injury, reportedly a contusion to his rotator cuff, and reportedly could miss more than a month recovering. Injured in a Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans, he was sacked 12 times in three games.

The undefeated 49ers (5-0) have scored 30-plus points in every game this season. The Browns have allowed only 60 points this season.

If Walker starts, the former XFL standout would face off against 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was the Panthers’ defensive coordinator and then interim coach during Walker’s three seasons at Carolina. Walker was benched after Wilks briefly gave him a chance to start in 2022.

Cleveland lost at Baltimore, 28-3, prior to last week’s bye with rookie fifth-round pick Thompson-Robinson replacing Watson in the lineup.

The Browns were missing several other starters Wednesday including defensive end Myles Garrett (foot), guard Joel Bitonio (knee) and tight end David Njoku (face, hand), who is third on the team with 16 receptions.

Garrett leads the Browns with 5.5 sacks.

Browns DE Myles Garrett deemed ‘good to go’

All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett is back and he could have his sidekick when the Cleveland Browns tackle the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Garrett did not play last week while recovering from minor injuries sustained in a single-car accident days before Cleveland’s Week 4 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

“Good to go,” coach Kevin Stefanski said of Garrett. “Excited to have him back out there.”

The Browns are hopeful defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is back on the field. He practiced Friday for the first time since injuring his ankle in the Week 2 loss to the New York Jets.

“I miss playing, and I’m ready to be back,” said Clowney, who has 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Defensive tackle Taven Bryan (hamstring) also practiced on Friday and could be available, Stefanski said.

The Browns were missing all three defensive linemen last week and allowed 202 rushing yards to the Falcons.

Reports: Browns DE Myles Garrett home from hospital

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was released from the hospital late Monday night, according to reports.

Garrett and a passenger were taken by ambulance for medical attention with non-life-threatening injuries Monday after a single-vehicle crash.

NFL Network reported Tuesday that Garrett “swerved to avoid an animal on a wet road and overcorrected. Car flipped multiple times. Could’ve been worse.”

The Browns said Monday the accident occurred after Garrett, 26, left the practice facility in Berea, Ohio.

Many outlets shared post-crash images of Garrett’s 2021 Porsche, which went off the road and flipped multiple times before coming to a rest.

Details of the crash that happened at about 3 p.m. ET near Wadsworth in Ohio’s Medina County are under investigation. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed there was a female passenger in the vehicle and that both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Garrett was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and is in his sixth season with the Browns. He has recorded 61.5 sacks and 12 forced fumbles in 71 games (69 starts).

The Browns (2-1) are scheduled for an off day on Tuesday. Cleveland plays Sunday at the Atlanta Falcons (1-2).

Browns DE Myles Garrett (neck), G Joel Bitonio (biceps) miss practice

Cleveland’s pass rush is questionable for Thursday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Browns ruled defensive end Jadeveon Clowney out on Monday but All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett was an addition to the injury report with a neck injury and didn’t practice on Tuesday.

As to the likelihood Garrett, who has 61.5 sacks in 70 career games, could miss time, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said, “We’ll see.”

“We’ve talked about that player opposite Myles often gets a little bit less attention. And then with JD [Clowney] he’s another guy that teams pay attention to and he’s very disruptive. He does a great job in the run game. …. Gets great effort sacks, effort pressures. So somebody’s just got to step up and whoever next man up, we just need the best version of that person.”

Cleveland could be without injured guard Joel Bitonio (biceps) against the Steelers on a short week after he also sat out Tuesday’s practice.

Stefanski said All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin, who didn’t play the first two games, is “very, very close” to seeing game action.

Clowney is out with an ankle injury, and defensive end Chase Winovich has a hamstring injury. Winovich and tight end Jesse James (biceps) landed on injured reserve on Tuesday, meaning they’ll miss at least four games.

Clowney has six pressures and 1.5 sacks this season after returning to the Browns in free agency. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Alex Smith.

Garrett and Bitonio were hurt Sunday in the Browns’ loss to the New York Jets but finished the game. Since neither participated in Tuesday’s practice, they missed the lone full workout of the week before Thursday’s game.

Report: Jac Collinsworth, Jason Garrett to call Notre Dame games

NBC has filled its empty broadcast booth for Notre Dame telecasts with Jac Collinsworth and former NFL head coach Jason Garrett, the New York Post reported Sunday.

Collinsworth will replace Mike Tirico on play-by-play, while Garrett will occupy the analyst chair filled last season by Drew Brees.

Tirico is taking over Al Michaels’ role as the voice of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.” Brees left NBC after one NFL season that saw his performance widely criticized.

Garrett also will replace Brees on NBC’s Sunday pregame show, “Football Night in America,” on which Collinsworth will have a role, per the report.

NBC has yet to confirm the news.

Collinsworth, 27, is the son of Cris Collinsworth, the “Sunday Night Football” analyst and former NFL wide receiver. A 2017 graduate of Notre Dame, the younger Collinsworth was part of NBC’s sideline production crew for Fighting Irish football games for multiple seasons and a sideline reporter for the network of the school’s spring football game in 2016-17.

After graduation, he went on to work for ESPN in various college football-related roles and also for NBC, where he has reported from the Olympics, worked on “Football Night in America” and was the play-by-play voice of the USFL, among his roles.

Garrett, 56, spent 10 seasons as coach of the Dallas Cowboys (2010-19) and compiled an 85-67 record. He spent time as the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants the past two seasons until he was fired on Nov. 23, 2021, amid the team’s offensive struggles.

He was a career backup quarterback in the NFL, spending seven seasons in Dallas and one with the Giants.

Giants WR Kenny Golladay: I was yelling at Jason Garrett, not Daniel Jones

New York Giants receiver Kenny Golladay said his outburst during Thursday night’s 30-29 loss to the Washington Football Team was aimed at offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and not quarterback Daniel Jones.

Television cameras caught Golladay yelling on the sidelines in the fourth quarter of the NFC East battle. Jones was seen looking at Golladay during the incident.

“Pretty much just me just talking to (Garrett) a little bit,” Golladay told reporters on Monday. “That is two competitive guys right there. Moreso just me wanting to do anything I can. Not so much get me the ball more.”

Golladay was targeted eight times during the contest. He had three catches for 38 yards and also dropped a pass.

Golladay, who signed a four-year, $72 million deal with New York in the offseason, said his tantrum was out of character.

“I’ve never done anything like that either,” said the fifth-year pro, who was a Pro Bowl selection for the Detroit Lions in 2019. “Really just passion. Just being a competitor. I want to do anything I can to help the team and I let the emotions get the best of me.”

Second-year coach Joe Judge on Monday downplayed the situation, surely figuring his 0-2 team doesn’t need a distraction that the New York tabloids could have a field day with.

“You guys asked me the other night about Kenny, there was no argument on the sideline,” Judge said. “There was no him versus Daniel or anything of that nature. This is a guy that in the heat of the moment, you speak very passionately. You kind of speak with some emotion. I speak with emotion on the sideline. There was no blowup or anything that has to be made of it.

“I understand sometimes the perceptions will be what they are, but like I said the other day, there’s no issue there.”

Jones didn’t seem to dispute the incident in his comment to reporters.

“There’s lots of ways to communicate and we’ll work through it,” Jones said. “There’s a lot of emotions to the game and I certainly understand that. Me and Kenny have a great relationship and I know we can communicate and do what we need to do there. I appreciate his passion and emotion.”

Golladay has seven receptions for 102 yards this season for the Giants, who host the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3.

Giants’ Kitchens to call plays with Garrett isolated

Freddie Kitchens draws the assignment of calling plays against his former team Sunday night with New York Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett quarantined for COVID-19.

Garrett tested positive for the coronavirus and Kitchens, who served as Cleveland’s head coach last season, will fill the role of play-caller when the Browns (9-4) visit the Giants (5-8) in East Rutherford, N.J.

“We are currently working with the league’s chief medical officer regarding close contacts,” the Giants said in a statement Thursday. “Because of the league’s most updated protocols, Giants coaches and players did not meet on either Monday or Tuesday, and the majority of the coaching staff worked remotely.”

The Giants canceled practice Thursday and were awaiting feedback from the NFL after a thorough review of close contacts, but the team doesn’t expect additional assistant coaches or players to be isolated.

Kitchens and general manager John Dorsey were fired by the Browns following a 6-10 season in 2019.

Garrett, 54, coached the Dallas Cowboys for nine-plus seasons, compiling an 85-67 record from 2010-19.

Browns’ Garrett says helmet incident is in the past

The last time the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers played each other, Myles Garrett was using a helmet as a weapon and earning a season-ending suspension.

The two teams square off again Sunday in Pittsburgh and Garrett, the star defensive end for the Browns, is expecting a clean game without skirmishes.

Garrett said he has moved past the incident from last November in which he ripped the helmet off the head of Mason Rudolph and smacked the Pittsburgh quarterback in the head. He missed the final six games of the campaign due to the suspension.

There will be approximately 5,500 fans in attendance, and Garrett is expecting a frigid greeting.

“You’ve got play within yourself and not allow those emotions to guide you and your actions,” Garrett said. “Just play how you always have, no matter if someone’s there or no one’s there.”

The 24-year-old Garrett said he hasn’t considered seeking out Rudolph. In the aftermath of last year’s incident, Garrett accused Rudolph of using “the N-word.”

Ben Roethlisberger, who missed most of last season with an elbow injury, is back as Pittsburgh’s quarterback. That leaves Rudolph as an unlikely on-field participant.

“I haven’t thought about it,” Garrett said of speaking to Rudolph. “Focusing on how I’m going to get to Ben. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it, whether that’s down the road or whenever we see each other. I’m just focused on the game plan and getting the win. That comes secondary.”

The Browns (4-1) are off to a strong start and the Steelers (4-0) lead the AFC North, a division in which the Baltimore Ravens (4-1) are also playing well.

Garrett has been superb and ranks second in the NFL with six sacks. He is tied for the league lead with three forced fumbles. He has 36.5 career sacks in 42 games.

The incident surely didn’t hurt the stock of the former No. 1 overall pick with the Browns. Cleveland signed the fourth-year pro to a five-year, $125 million extension in July.

But he knows the spotlight will be on him Sunday so he will be focused on keeping his cool.

“We won’t be worried about what they’re doing to frustrate or knock us off our game,” Garrett said. “But I think they’re going to play a clean, fair game, and we’re going to do the same.”

Also on the line is Cleveland’s long history of dismal results at Heinz Field. The Browns last won in Pittsburgh in 2003 and have dropped 16 straight visits.

“We get a win there,” Garrett said, “and most people would give us some respect and see us as a legit team across the league.”
