Bengals S Geno Stone week-to-week after exiting preseason opener

Cincinnati Bengals starting safety Geno Stone is week-to-week as he deals with a soft tissue issue, head coach Zac Taylor announced on Saturday.

Stone appeared to injure his hamstring on his third play of Cincinnati’s eventual 34-27 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in a preseason game. He stayed in the game for one more snap before calling it a night.

Tycen Anderson and Daijahn Anthony serve as the backup safeties behind starters Jordan Battle and Stone for the Bengals, who open the regular season at the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 7.

Stone, 26, recorded a career-high 81 tackles to go along with four interceptions while starting all 17 games last season.

He has totaled 208 tackles and 12 picks in 68 career games (36 starts) with the Baltimore Ravens (2020-23) and Bengals. He was selected by the Ravens in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Reports: Bengals, S Geno Stone agree to two-year contract

Former Ravens safety Geno Stone agreed to a two-year, $15 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, according to multiple reports.

Stone was second in the NFL with seven interceptions last season and Baltimore general manager Eric DeCosta labeled him the “best seventh-round pick we’ve ever had” when discussing his free agency at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Primarily a backup and special teams player for the Ravens, Stone stepped into a regular role when Marcus Williams missed time with a pectoral injury.

Stone turns 25 in April and played 51 games in four seasons with Baltimore, recording 127 tackles, eight interceptions and one forced fumble.

Ravens activate LB Justin Houston, three others; Lamar Jackson back

Baltimore activated four defensive players from the reserve/COVID-19 list before practice Wednesday.

Additionally, coach John Harbaugh said quarterback Lamar Jackson would practice on a limited basis, making his first appearance on the field since sustaining an ankle injury on Dec. 12 in a loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Now that they are off the COVID-19 list, outside linebacker Justin Houston, safety Geno Stone and inside linebackers Chris Board and Kristian Welch now will be available to play Sunday when the Ravens (8-7) travel west to play the Los Angeles Rams (11-4).

Cornerbacks Chris Westry and Jimmy Smith and outside linebacker Pernell McPhee were activated earlier this week. Starting outside linebacker Tyus Bowser and backup safety Ar’Darius Washington went on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.

Sunday’s game is a must-win for the Ravens, who were 8-3 and in first place in the AFC North division on Nov. 28. They have lost four games since and now need to beat the Rams — and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18 — and get some help to earn a playoff spot.
