Bengals clear TE Mike Gesicki to return to practice

The Cincinnati Bengals cleared tight end Mike Gesicki and safety Daijahn Anthony to return to practice on Wednesday.

Gesicki has been on injured reserve since Oct. 15 with a pectoral injury and Anthony has been on the list since Aug. 26 with a hamstring injury.

Gesicki, 30, caught eight passes for 61 yards in six games (one start) before sustaining the injury in a Week 6 loss at Green Bay.

He has 333 catches for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns in 121 games (45 starts) for the Miami Dolphins (2018-22), New England Patriots (2023) and Bengals.

Anthony, 25, was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and appeared in 13 games as a rookie, totaling three tackles and one pass defensed.

The Bengals (3-7) host the New England Patriots (9-2) on Sunday.

The Bengals have a 21-day window to elevate the players to the 53-man active roster or shut them down for the rest of the season.

Bengals TE Mike Gesicki, Tanner Hudson both ailing

Cincinnati Bengals tight ends Mike Gesicki and Tanner Hudson were both injured in Sunday’s loss at Green Bay.

Gesicki will be out for “a while” after sustaining a pectoral injury on the team’s first drive in the 27-18 loss to the Packers, coach Zac Taylor said Monday.

Hudson replaced Gesicki and caught four passes for 10 yards and a touchdown but was in the concussion protocol on Monday, Taylor said.

Tight ends Noah Fant, Drew Sample and Cam Grandy are likely in for larger roles with a quick turnaround before the Bengals (2-4) host the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1) on Thursday night.

Gesicki, 30, has eight receptions for 61 yards in six games (one start) this season. He has 333 catches for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns in 121 career games (45 starts) with the Miami Dolphins (2018-22), New England Patriots (2023) and Bengals.

Sunday’s catches were the first of the season for Hudson, 30, in five games. He has 77 career receptions for 715 yards and three scores in 61 games (two starts) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2019-20), San Francisco 49ers (2021), New York Giants (2022) and Bengals.

Dolphins HC: Miami not shopping TE Mike Gesicki

Tight end Mike Gesicki is wearing the franchise tag, but the Miami Dolphins deny he’ll be wearing another uniform this season.

Gesicki, tagged before the start of 2022 free agency, remains part of the plan this season as far as head coach Mike McDaniel is concerned.

“These reports are tricky to me because I’m like — again I’ve alluded to this before at the beginning of the offseason — during the training camp, during the offseason in general, GMs have work to do, and they’re not just watching us coach,” McDaniel said. “So when people report that somebody is, when they use that loose verbiage of ‘his name’s been brought up’ or whatever, I mean, the report is kind of misleading because there are probably just gonna be a lot of names on that report. All I’m focused on, and that’s regardless of what people try to churn up, I’m focused on coaching Mike, Mike’s focused on getting better.”

Gesicki, 26, lined up as a wide receiver more than his college position, tight end, under the previous regime.

Because of the short-term financial commitment and versatility, McDaniel understands why Gesicki’s name is floated in trade rumors.

Even so, he said there is no reason to expect Gesicki to be moved and plans to start him at the traditional tight end position.

“He had a great week of practice this week, which tells you a lot about that individual because there has been random noise that he hasn’t listened to clearly,” McDaniel said. “He’s putting his best foot forward, and that’s all that I’m concerned about. It’s my job to coach the players on the team, and I like coaching Mike. Beyond that, it’s kind of a no-ends process of talking about ‘Did someone talk about somebody else?’ That stuff happens more often than it doesn’t.”

Gesicki, a second-round pick in 2018, has 199 receptions and 13 touchdowns in 64 career games. He caught 73 passes for 780 yards and two scores in 2021.

Report: Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki likely to play on franchise tag

Miami Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki likely will play the upcoming season on the franchise tag, NFL Network reported.

The two sides have until Friday to reach a long-term deal or he will play the 2022 season on a franchise tender, earning a salary of $10.931 million.

The odds of hammering out a new contract appear low, per the report, meaning Gesicki will become a free agent next offseason.

Gesicki, 26, recorded career-high totals in catches (73) and receiving yards (780) to go along with two touchdowns in 17 games last season.

He has 199 catches for 2,255 yards and 13 scores in 64 career games since being selected by the Dolphins in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
