Bucs WR Godwin misses practice one day after finger procedure

Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin sat out practice Wednesday, one day after undergoing a procedure to remove 10 pins from his left index finger.

The Buccaneers don’t expect Godwin to return to practice until Friday, two days before their crucial home game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Godwin fractured the finger while catching a touchdown pass against the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 25. He underwent surgery two days later and missed an ensuing game against the New York Giants.

He was fitted with a splint and has played the past four games. In fact, Godwin has 21 receptions over the past three contests.

“There’s no chart for the toughness of Chris Godwin,” Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians told reporters. “If it goes to 10, throw it away and start over again because the dude plays. He had a mitt on his hand to protect his finger and he’s catching balls in practice with that on. He’s amazing and he’s one of the toughest guys that I’ve coached.”

Godwin, who was a Pro Bowl selection last season, has 49 receptions for 562 yards and three touchdowns in eight games this season. He missed time earlier in the season due to a hamstring injury and a concussion.

Also, second-year cornerback Jamel Dean has cleared the concussion protocol but is dealing with a groin injury, according to Arians.

“He cleared the protocol but he had a very, very sore groin so he did not practice today,” Arians said of Dean. “Hopefully we’ll get him healed up.”

Dean missed Tampa Bay’s last game, a 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 29. The Buccaneers had a bye last weekend.

Jaguars activate K McLaughlin, S Wingard

The Jacksonville Jaguars made six roster moves Saturday, including promoting four players from their practice squad.

The Jags (1-7) activated kicker Chase McLaughlin from the commissioner’s permission list and safety Andrew Wingard from injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers (6-2).

Linebacker Joe Giles-Harris was activated from the practice squad to replace Dakota Allen (ankle), who was ruled out for the game, while receiver Terry Godwin will replace Laviska Shenault Jr., out with an injured hamstring.

Offensive lineman KC McDermott and safety Doug Middleton were also promoted from the practice squad. Starting center Brandon Linder (back) was ruled out and won’t make the trip.

The return of Wingard, who started three games before going on IR ahead of the team’s Week 6 game, was expected. He has 25 tackles and an interception.

McLaughlin replaces Josh Lambo, who is out for the season with a gluteus medius injury. McLaughlin has connected on 18 of 23 on field goals and made all 26 of his extra points in his career. The second-year player has spent time with the Colts, Chargers and 49ers.

Giles-Harris, who joined the team last season as an undrafted free agent, was activated for five games last season, playing mainly on special teams. As for Godwin, this marks the first time he has been elevated from the practice squad since joining the team last year.

McDermott will be on the active roster for the third time this season after playing on special teams against the Dolphins and Bengals. Middleton will be on the active roster for the fourth time, as he saw action against the Bengals, Chargers and Texans.

Buccaneers WR Godwin expected to return vs. Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin is expected to return from a finger injury and play in Sunday night’s NFC South showdown against the New Orleans Saints.

Godwin fractured his left index finger while catching a touchdown pass against the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 25. He underwent surgery two days later and missed an ensuing game against the New York Giants.

Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said Friday that he was encouraged by what he saw from Godwin in practice.

“We’ll see how sore it is tomorrow. He caught the ball fine, but we’ll see how sore it is,” Arians told reporters. “But I would anticipate him probably playing, just knowing how tough he is and knowing what it all means to him.”

Godwin was a Pro Bowl selection last season when he established career highs of 86 receptions, 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns.

The 24-year-old has been limited to four games this season due to injuries and has 25 catches for 279 yards and two scores. He also missed time due to a concussion and a hamstring injury.

Arians said Godwin will be wearing a brace to make sure there isn’t a setback with the finger injury.

“They’ve got a very nice splint/brace thing worked out that he wore today. But Chris is tough. He’ll be out there,” Arians said. “If there was any jeopardy at all, we would not let him play. He’s been cleared, so we’ll just see how the pain tolerance goes and see how sore he is tomorrow.”

Sunday’s game also marks the first in which seven-time Pro Bowl receiver Antonio Brown is available to play for the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay also features three-time Pro Bowl selection Mike Evans at receiver.

Bucs’ Evans, Godwin to play, RB Fournette out vs. Packers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have both of their Pro Bowl wide receivers in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the visiting Green Bay Packers.

While both Mike Evans (ankle) and Chris Godwin (hamstring) are active, running back Leonard Fournette was listed as inactive for the clash versus the Packers (4-0). Fournette previously was listed as questionable with an ankle injury.

Evans, who leads the team in catches (22), receiving yards (271) and touchdowns (six), played through an ankle injury in Tampa Bay’s 20-19 setback to Chicago on Oct. 8.

Godwin has been sidelined since making five receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown in Tampa Bay’s 28-10 win at Denver on Sept. 27. He has 11 catches with 143 receiving yards and a touchdown this season after coming off a breakout campaign that saw him haul in 86 passes for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns.

Fournette was active for the Buccaneers’ loss to the Bears but did not have a rushing attempt. He has 123 rushing yards in his first season with the team.

Ronald Jones, who leads the team in carries (74) and rushing yards (359), is expected to receive the bulk of the workload in the backfield.

Along with Fournette, Tampa Bay listed quarterback Ryan Griffin, linebacker Quinton Bell, offensive guard Aaron Stinnie and defensive lineman Khalil Davis as inactive.

Bucs’ Godwin out, Evans questionable vs. Bears

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without one of their Pro Bowl wide receivers for Thursday’s game against the host Chicago Bears, while the other is listed as questionable.

Chris Godwin was ruled out Wednesday and will miss his second game with a hamstring injury for the Bucs (3-1), who also ruled out running back LeSean McCoy (ankle) and wide receiver Justin Watson (shoulder).

Wide receiver Mike Evans was listed as questionable to face the Bears (3-1) after working through an ankle injury sustained in the first quarter of Sunday’s 38-31 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Evans, 27, leads the team in catches (17) and touchdowns (five), while fellow wideout Scotty Miller — who is questionable with hip and groin injuries — has a club-best 250 yards receiving.

Godwin, 24, has 11 catches with 143 receiving yards and a touchdown this season. He’s coming off a breakout season that saw him haul in 86 passes for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns.

Running back Leonard Fournette (ankle) was listed as doubtful for Tampa Bay, which likely will rely on Ronald Jones II and rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn out of the backfield.

Jones leads the team in carries (57) and rushing yards (253), while Vaughn had a touchdown reception versus the Chargers.

Chicago safety Deon Bush was ruled out against Tampa Bay after sustaining a hamstring injury in Sunday’s 19-11 loss versus Indianapolis.

Fellow safety and special teams player Sherrick McManis is listed as doubtful with an ailing hamstring.

Rookie wide receiver Darnell Mooney has been declared as questionable for Thursday’s game with a shoulder injury.
