Buccaneers activate RT Luke Goedeke (foot) off IR

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers activated starting right tackle Luke Goedeke off injured reserve on Saturday and placed him on the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game against the visiting New England Patriots.

Goedeke aggravated a foot injury in Week 2 and missed the next six games. He was a full practice participant on Friday and was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Goedeke, who turns 27 on Nov. 21, has started 40 of 43 games played in his NFL career since being a second-round pick in 2022 out of Central Michigan.

Shortly before the start of the season, Goedeke received a four-year, $90 million extension through the 2029 season. The $22.5 million annual average salary ranks third among right tackles.

The Buccaneers also released 25-year-old rookie safety Sebastian Castro. His lone appearance for Tampa Bay came in Week 6 on special teams when he had one tackle against the San Francisco 49ers.

Tampa Bay also elevated linebackers Nick Jackson and Mohamed Kamara from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.

Bucs sign two OL, RG Cody Mauch (knee) headed to IR

Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting right guard Cody Mauch sustained a season-ending knee injury in Monday’s victory over the Houston Texans and will be placed on injured reserve Thursday.

Mauch was able to finish the game for the Buccaneers (2-0), who are now without three starting offensive linemen entering Sunday’s contest against the visiting New York Jets (0-2).

Injuries were the prevailing storyline at One Buc Place on Thursday.

Rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka missed practice after not participating on Wednesday due to hip and groin injuries. The first-round pick has three touchdown receptions in two games, filling the production missed with Chris Godwin working back from a 2024 ankle injury. Godwin is doing some individual drills at practice but isn’t ready for a full workload.

Wide receiver isn’t the only position hurting.

Tampa Bay also lost right tackle Luke Goedeke to a foot injury Monday, while All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs is still working his way back after having knee surgery in July. Wirfs returned to practice last week as a limited participant but is considered unlikely to return this week.

Veteran guard Sua Opeta signed to the practice squad on Thursday and the Bucs signed Dan Feeney off of the Bills’ practice squad. Opeta was competing to be a starter in Tampa Bay’s 2024 training camp when he suffered a torn ACL. He returned to camp with the team in August but was released.

The Buccaneers have been using a makeshift offensive line with starting center Graham Barton shuffling to left tackle, traditional left guard Ben Bredeson — who edged out Opeta last summer — moving to center and Michael Jordan getting the start at left guard. Charlie Heck replaced Goedeke after the latter was injured on Monday.

Mauch, 26, has started all 39 of Tampa Bay’s games (including playoffs) since being selected by the Buccaneers in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Reports: Buccaneers RT Luke Goedeke signs $90M extension

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and right tackle Luke Goedeke agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract extension, several reports said Tuesday.

Goedeke was a second-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2022 and swung out to tackle after spending his rookie year at left guard.

He started all 17 games in 2023 and made 13 more starts in 2024, having recovered from an early-season concussion.

The average annual value of his new contract — $22.5 million — makes Goedeke the third-highest paid right tackle in the NFL, behind only Detroit’s Penei Sewell and Philadelphia’s Lane Johnson. Last year the Bucs signed left tackle Tristan Wirfs to a five-year extension, making him currently the second-highest paid left tackle in the league ($28.12 million per year).

Bucs All-Pro S Antoine Winfield Jr. (foot) out for 2nd straight game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. was ruled out for Sunday’s home matchup with the Denver Broncos, the second straight game he will miss with a foot injury he suffered in Week 1.

Right tackle Luke Goedeke (concussion) and defensive tackle Calijah Kancey (calf) will also sit out for the second straight week as the Bucs (2-0) seek their first 3-0 start since 2005.

Defensive tackle Vita Vea (knee) missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday before being a limited participant on Friday. He’s listed as doubtful. Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles told reporters that Vea will likely be a game-time decision.

Winfield, 26, who landed a four-year, $84.1 million deal in May that included $45 million fully guaranteed, was an All-Pro last season and a Pro Bowl selection in 2021.

In his fifth season since the Bucs drafted him in the second round in 2020, Winfield has seven interceptions, 27 pass breakups, 11 forced fumbles (including tying for the NFL lead with six in 2023), eight fumble recoveries, 15 sacks and 391 tackles.

Buccaneers missing at least three starters vs. Lions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have ruled out three starters –All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (foot, ankle), defensive tackle Calijah Kancey (calf) and right tackle Luke Goedeke (concussion) — for Sunday’s road game against the Detroit Lions.

Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles also ruled out backup cornerback Josh Hayes (ankle), while starting cornerback Zyon McCallum and starting defensive end Logan Hall are both questionable.

McCallum has practiced all week after suffering a concussion in Week 1 but still has to clear concussion protocol. He must clear protocol by Saturday to be eligible to play Sunday. Hall missed the season opener with a foot injury.

“Zyon has some tests to pass. We’ll see how Logan feels tomorrow,” Bowles said. “I feel good about (McCollum). He’s working hard. You’ve got to pass the test, which I’m not a part of, so we’ll see.”

Reserve safety/nickelback Christian Izien is expected to fill in for Winfield, while backup/swing tackle Justin Skule will replace Goedeke. If Smith isn’t healthy by Sunday, Izien could play nickel with Kaveon Merriweather at safety, Bowles said. Ben Stille is listed as Kancey’s backup on the depth chart.

“Guys make this team for a reason,” Bowles said. “Everybody’s going to go through their lumps at some point. Better now than midseason — give some young guys and give some other guys some experience that could help us later on, so we’re going to go with what we got.”

Undrafted rookie free agent Tyrek Funderburk, who was inactive in Week 1, would replace McCollum if that latter doesn’t clear protocol.

For the Lions, safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (ankle) and wide receiver Isaiah Williams (abdomen) were ruled out, while defensive end Marcus Davenport (groin) is doubtful. Starting wide receiver Jameson Williams and starting right tackle Penei Sewell are questionable with ankle injuries, and starting safety Kerby Joseph (hamstring) is also questionable.
