Browns CB Denzel Ward injures knee, questionable vs. Texans

Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward sustained a knee injury in practice Thursday and is questionable for Saturday’s wild-card game against the Houston Texans, head coach Kevin Stefanski said.

Ward, a Pro Bowl selection for the third time this season, was limited in practice, the coach said.

On the regular season, Ward, 26, appeared in 13 games (11 starts) and tallied 34 tackles, 11 pass breakups, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Stefanski said safety Grant Delpit, who is battling a groin injury, has been ruled out. The Browns designated him to return from injured reserve on Thursday.

Also out against Houston are wide receiver Cedric Tillman (concussion) and kicker Dustin Hopkins (hamstring).

Browns designate S Grant Delpit to return from IR

The Cleveland Browns designated safety Grant Delpit to return from injured reserve on Wednesday.

Delpit was the team’s leading tackler (80) before missing the final four games with a groin injury. The Browns have not said whether Delpit will be available for Saturday’s wild-card game at Houston.

Delpit, 25, started the first 13 games this season and added 1.5 sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.

The 2020 second-round draft pick was selected as an alternate for this year’s Pro Bowl.

Cleveland also signed cornerback Kalon Barnes, 25, to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Browns S Grant Delpit placed on IR, done for season

The Cleveland Browns placed safety and leading tackler Grant Delpit (groin) on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his regular season.

Delpit could possibly return for the playoffs, should the Browns qualify. The Browns (8-5) would be in as the fifth seed in the AFC if the season ended today. However, Delpit has to miss at least four games and there are just four games remaining. The Browns host the Chicago Bears (5-8) this week.

Delpit, 25, just signed a three-year extension worth $36 million, including $23 million guaranteed earlier this week. He would have been eligible for free agency after the season.

Delpit was injured in Sunday’s win over Jacksonville. He had started all 13 games and is leading the Browns with 80 tackles. He also has 1.5 sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Delpit, who missed his rookie season with a torn Achilles, has 251 tackles and six INTs in 45 games (36 starts) in the three seasons since. The Browns selected him in the second round of the 2020 draft.

In a corresponding move, the Browns signed safety Duron Harmon to the active roster from the practice squad. The 32-year-old veteran has 23 career INTs in 164 career games (79 starts) with five teams.

The team signed OT Joey Fisher to the practice squad.

Reports: Browns S Grant Delpit agrees to extension

Cleveland Browns safety Grant Delpit agreed to a contract extension, multiple media outlets reported Sunday morning.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reported it is a three-year extension worth $36 million, including $23 million in guarantees.

Delpit, 25, is concluding a four-year, $7.46 million contract he signed prior to his rookie season in 2020.

He has recorded 74 tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and a half-sack in 12 games (all starts) this season.

Delpit has overcome an Achilles injury that cost him his entire rookie season by totaling 245 tackles, six picks and 1.5 sacks in 44 career games (35 starts). He was selected by the Browns in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
