Transfer CB Tony Grimes chooses Texas A&M

Former North Carolina cornerback Tony Grimes, one of the top cornerbacks available in the NCAA transfer portal, announced his commitment to Texas A&M on Thursday.

“College Station, Lets do it,” Grimes wrote on social media above a video revealing his commitment to the Aggies.

Grimes, a 6-foot, 195-pound corner from Virginia Beach, was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 cornerback recruit in the Class of 2021, per the 247Sports composite rankings, before he reclassified to 2020.

He has two years of eligibility remaining.

He made four starts as a true freshman in 2020 before becoming a full-time starter in 2021. In 32 games over three seasons in Chapel Hill, Grimes has tallied 19 pass breakups and 97 tackles with one interception and one sack.

Texas A&M had four cornerbacks enter the portal, including a pair of highly-touted members of its 2022 freshman class, Denver Harris and Smoke Bouie. Harris and some teammates received a suspension for the Aggies’ last seven games over a locker room incident.

North Carolina CB Tony Grimes, former top recruit, to transfer

North Carolina cornerback Tony Grimes, a former five-star recruit and three-year starter for the Tar Heels, announced Monday he will transfer.

“Thank you Tar Heel family for all the love and support these past three years,” Grimes wrote in a social media post. “After many prayers, and further discussion with family and friends, I have decided to enter the transfer portal to further pursue my football career and goals.”

Former Boise State DL Greg Grimes shot to death

Former Boise State defensive lineman Greg Grimes was shot to death early Monday morning in a shooting outside a Sacramento nightclub. Grimes was 31.

Four other people were wounded in the shooting. Sacramento police chief Kathy Lester said calls about the shooting began at 1:51 a.m.

Grimes redshirted in 2008 and played for Boise State from 2009-12.

“I, and the entire Boise State football family, are saddened to learn about the passing of Greg Grimes,” Broncos coach Andy Avalos said on Twitter. “I was fortunate to coach him during his senior season. He was a member of the brotherhood who is gone way too soon. He will be missed.”

Avalos was defensive line coach in 2012 when Grimes posted a career-high 27 tackles. Boise State went 49-4 in Grimes’ four on-field seasons during an era when now-Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was the star quarterback for the first three of those seasons.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Grimes started a staffing company last year. He also was coaching at Inderkum High in Sacramento, his alma mater.

Deborah Grimes told the newspaper her son was leaving the Mix nightclub in Sacramento when he was shot. She said Greg Grimes was going to celebrate the Fourth of July with his 4-year-old son.

“He’s never been in the streets or anything, he doesn’t have that kind of background,” Deborah Grimes told the Bee. “You just would never think that someone like him would be murdered. He just doesn’t fit a profile of a troublemaker or anything like that.”

The Natomas Unified School District — which Inderkum is part — released a statement on Monday.

“We are saddened by the news of the passing of Greg Grimes,” the district said. “Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family and friends, and all the individuals he connected with through his work at Inderkum High School.”

Baylor hires Grimes as offensive coordinator

Baylor is attempting to punch up its offense and hopes it took a step in that direction by hiring Jeff Grimes as offensive coordinator on Monday.

Grimes, 52, spent the past three seasons at BYU and his 2020 offense tied for third in the nation in scoring (43.5 points per game) and was seventh in total offense (522.2). Quarterback Zach Wilson passed for 3,692 yards and 33 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

Grimes is a finalist for the Broyles Award, which is awarded to the nation’s top assistant coach.

His task will be to improve a Baylor offense that ranked 100th in scoring (23.3) and 118th in total offense (310.2) during a 2-7 season. The Bears scored a combined 17 points over their final two games.

“First of all, Jeff is a high-quality person,” Baylor head coach Dave Aranda said in a statement. “He is a family man. He is a true ball coach and a fundamental teacher of the game. He coaches a physical offense built on explosive plays in both the pass and run game. There is a strong identity in what he does. We will be building to that vision, and I know he will hold our staff and players accountable to that standard.”

Aranda and Grimes previously worked together at LSU from 2016-17 when the latter was offensive line coach and Aranda was defensive coordinator. Grimes spent four total seasons with the Tigers prior to this stint at BYU.

“I am absolutely fired up about joining Coach Aranda’s staff and leading the Baylor offense,” Grimes said in a statement. “I’ve known Dave for years and have always admired him as both a coach and person. There’s tremendous alignment between what Baylor University stands for and who I am at my core. I can’t wait to get back home to the great state of Texas and begin working with the tremendous student-athletes and coaches in the Baylor program.”

Grimes replaces Larry Fedora, who was dismissed after one season as Baylor’s offensive coordinator.
