Reports: Seahawks fire OC Ryan Grubb

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was fired by the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, according to multiple reports.

The Seahawks finished the 2024 season 28th in rushing (95.7 yards per game) and 18th in points per game (22.1).

First-year head coach Mike Macdonald hired Grubb after also interviewing then-UCLA head coach Chip Kelly and being denied an interview request for Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Kelly was hired as Ohio State offensive coordinator.

With no NFL playcalling experience, Macdonald shrugged off the risk of hiring Grubb on Feb. 13, 2024.

Grubb spent the previous two seasons at the University of Washington serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He initially agreed to join former Washington coach Kalen DeBoer at Alabama before the opportunity arose to stay in Seattle with the Seahawks.

DeBoer helped Grubb climb the ranks as a college coach at University of Sioux Falls, where they team from 2007-2013 to win two NAIA championships, and then at Eastern Michigan, Fresno State and Washington.

Alabama names Nick Sheridan as OC, JaMarcus Shephard as co-OC

Alabama football made two personnel moves to replace one coach who didn’t stay for long.

Alabama named Nick Sheridan its offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Tuesday while announcing JaMarcus Shephard as the Crimson Tide’s new assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.

The hires come after Ryan Grubb, who originally signed on as Alabama’s offensive coordinator under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, accepted the same position with the Seattle Seahawks instead. Grubb worked for DeBoer as Washington’s offensive coordinator and chose to remain in Seattle.

“Nick and JaMarcus are both fantastic coaches, and we are excited to have them join us at Alabama,” DeBoer said in a statement. “They have experience in our offense, and they know what we are trying to accomplish on that side of the football. They both bring passion and enthusiasm to their work and have proven to be excellent teachers and recruiters at every stop of their careers.”

Sheridan, 35, recently was hired as the tight ends coach at Alabama after filling the same role for DeBoer at Washington in 2022-23. A former quarterback at Michigan, Sheridan’s only offensive coordinator experience came at Indiana in 2020-21.

Shephard, 40, is known for working with star wide receivers Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk at Washington, where he spent two years on DeBoer’s offensive coaching staff.

Reports: Ryan Grubb exits Alabama to be Seahawks’ OC

Ryan Grubb, who recently agreed to become Alabama’s offensive coordinator, reportedly changed his mind and is heading back to Seattle for a new job.

Grubb, the University of Washington’s offensive coordinator the past two years, will take over that job with the Seattle Seahawks, ESPN and NFL.com reported Friday night.

Mike Macdonald recently took over as the Seahawks’ head coach, and he settled on Aden Durde as his defensive coordinator earlier Friday, per multiple media outlets.

Grubb had been due to follow former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer to Tuscaloosa, where DeBoer is stepping in for Nick Saban. Grubb worked under DeBoer at Sioux Falls, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State and Washington.

Grubb, 47, has no NFL coaching experience.

Last season, Grubb helped the Huskies to a 14-1 season that ended with a loss to Michigan in the College Football Playoff championship game. The Washington offense, led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., running back Dillon Johnson and wide receiver Rome Odunze, finished second in the country in passing offense (343.7 yards per game), 12th in total offense (462.1 yards per game) and 13th in scoring offense (36 points per game).

Shane Waldron served as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator from 2021-23. Seattle’s offense wound up 21st in the NFL last year in total yards (322.9 per game), and Waldron subsequently was hired as the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator after Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll moved to a front office position.

Durde, 44, was the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line coach the past three seasons. He previously was part of the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive staff from 2018-2020.
