Rams cut former starting RB Darrell Henderson

The Los Angeles Rams cut running back Darrell Henderson from the practice squad on Tuesday.

The Rams (8-7) filled the roster spot by signing former XFL long snapper Alex Matheson.

Henderson, 26, started four games and rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns this season. He has not played since Week 11, getting waived two days later then added to the practice squad.

The 2019 third-round pick had 2,431 yards from scrimmage and 19 TDs in 54 games (32 starts) with the Rams.

Second-year back Kyren Williams leads Los Angeles with 1,057 rushing yards and nine TDs in 11 games. The Rams returned running back Ronnie Rivers from injured reserve last week.

Matheson played for the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks in 2023.

Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson watches warmups before the Buckeyes game against Maryland at Ohio Stadium on Oct. 7, 2023.

Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson to return vs. Purdue

No. 3 Ohio State will have running back TreVeyon Henderson back this week when it travels to face Purdue, while wide receiver Emeka Egbuka’s status is less settled.

Henderson was held out of Saturday’s 37-17 victory over Maryland as a protective decision. No reason was given by Ohio State on gameday, but Henderson had a broken bone in his foot last year and missed five games.

Without their leading rusher, the Buckeyes gained just 62 yards on 33 attempts.

Egbuka picked up a leg injury during the fourth quarter and left the game after catching three passes for 40 yards.

“One thing I can tell you is that it’s not going to be a long-term issue,” coach Ryan Day said Tuesday. “We’ll probably have a better idea of how he’s doing later in the week. The good news was that it’s not a long-term issue. We’ll reevaluate it as the week goes on.”

Egbuka is second on the team to Marvin Harrison Jr. with 22 receptions. He has 303 yards and three touchdowns.

Henderson has 295 rushing yards and five touchdowns in four games this year.

Ex-Florida WR Xzavier Henderson transfers to Cincinnati

Former Florida wide receiver Xzavier Henderson announced Friday that he is transferring to Cincinnati.

He shared the news on Instagram, showing a photo taken inside the Cincinnati sports medicine building with the caption, “Today I woke up a Bearcat.”

Henderson becomes the third player to make the move from Gainesville to Cincinnati this offseason, following quarterback Emory Jones and defensive back Jordan Young.

In the 2022 season, Henderson started 11 games. He led the Gators with 38 catches and was third on the team in receiving yards with 410, adding two touchdowns.

Over his three seasons with Florida, he played in 35 games and caught 73 passes for 835 yards and five touchdowns.

A Miami native, Henderson was ranked by 247Sports as a four-star prospect and the No. 10 wide receiver in the Class of 2020.

Jaguars claim RB Darrell Henderson Jr., off waivers

The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed running back Darrell Henderson Jr. on Wednesday one day after the running back was placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Rams.

Henderson, who led the Rams with 283 rushing yards, is expected to fill the backup role behind rookie Travis Etienne.

Jacksonville waived offensive lineman John Miller to open up a roster spot.

Henderson received just four snaps as the Rams lost 27-20 to the host New Orleans Saints on Sunday. He rushed twice for 9 yards.

Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday that Henderson had a knee issue during pregame drills.

Henderson, 25, carried the ball 70 times in 10 appearances (seven starts) this season and scored three touchdowns. He also had 17 receptions for 102 yards.

Henderson rushed for 1,742 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 66 passes for 474 yards and four scores in 50 games (28 starts) for Los Angeles.

Rams part ways with leading rusher Darrell Henderson Jr.

The Los Angeles Rams waived fourth-year running back Darrell Henderson Jr. on Tuesday.

Henderson was the Rams’ leading rusher with a modest 283 yards. Los Angeles ranks 31st in the NFL in rushing offense at 76.1 yards per game.

Henderson received four snaps in Sunday’s 27-20 road loss to the New Orleans Saints. He rushed twice for 9 yards.

Cam Akers rushed 14 times for 61 yards and Kyren Williams received seven carries for 36 yards.

Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday that Henderson had a knee issue during pregame drills.

“He felt a little something in his knee and that was kind of what led to Cam and Kyren getting the majority of the work,” McVay said of Henderson. “But he said he felt fine (Monday).”

The Rams also waived linebacker Justin Hollins form the active roster and tight end Kendall Blanton from the practice squad.

The defending Super Bowl-champion Rams are just 3-7 heading into Sunday’s road against the Kansas City Chiefs. Los Angeles has dropped four straight games.

Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson on track to play Saturday

Ohio State star running back TreVeyon Henderson is on track to return Saturday at Michigan State, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day confirmed Tuesday.

Henderson missed last Saturday’s 49-10 win against Rutgers. He was downgraded to out after pregame warm-ups and was seen leaving Ohio Stadium with his foot in a walking boot, per ESPN.

The medical staff will have the final say on whether the sophomore will take the field when No. 3 Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) faces the Spartans (2-3, 0-2) in East Lansing, Mich.

Henderson has rushed for 318 yards and three touchdowns in four games this season.

In 2021, he ran for 1,248 yards and 15 scores and caught 27 passes for 312 yards and four TDs in 13 contests.

Michigan State linebacker Darius Snow (23) is carried off the field during the first half against Western Michigan at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing on Friday, Sept. 2, 2022.

Michigan State defense loses two key players, one for season

Michigan State’s season-opening victory over Western Michigan was costly as coach Mel Tucker announced Monday that linebacker Darius Snow will miss the rest of the season and safety Xavier Henderson will miss substantial time.

Tucker didn’t reveal specifics about the injuries. According to reports, Snow was worked on after a teammate accidently ran into his right leg in the second quarter, and Henderson was sporting crutches on the sidelines in the second half with a brace on his right leg.

Snow had 87 tackles, including 5.5 for loss, last season. He is the son of former Michigan State and NBA guard Eric Snow and the nephew of former Spartans All-American and NFL linebacker Percy Snow, who is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

“Snow is going to be out for the year,” Tucker said. “I feel terribly for him. He’s worked really hard and he’s playing at a high level. He won’t be with us for the rest of the season.”

Henderson considered declaring for the NFL draft after last season before deciding to stay in school. The team captain entered this season with 233 tackles, including 13.5 for loss, to go with three interceptions and three sacks. The 35-13 victory was his 47th appearance for the Spartans.

“He’s sore,” Tucker said of Henderson, “so we’ll just have to see how he comes along with his treatments and things like that. He’ll be ready when he’s ready.”

Rams notebook: Andrew Whitworth calls on peers to aid in community

If playing left tackle in the Super Bowl at age 40 weren’t impressive enough, Andrew Whitworth just raised the stakes even higher.

The Los Angeles Rams veteran was selected as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year on Thursday night, the top off-field honor an NFL player can receive.

One day later, Whitworth said he figured out he was the winning recipient prior to the announcement. He said multiple NFL personnel members approached him to see if his speech was ready.

Regardless, he was honored to win the prestigious award, which recognizes “outstanding community service activities off the field, as well as excellence on it.” Whitworth is dedicated to numerous causes in Southern California and his native Louisiana related to housing insecurity and financial inequities.

“Our game is driven by the fans and the communities that pay attention and watch and buy jerseys and come to games,” Whitworth said Friday. “In the ways I give back to my communities, it shows my respect for the communities. … I believe in paying forward. To me, community service is important.”

Whitworth has spent the past five seasons with the Rams after playing his first 11 seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals — Los Angeles’ opponent in Super Bowl LVI.

Rams coach Sean McVay said he is just in awe of Whitworth’s accomplishments.

“I can’t say enough about what he has meant to me personally as a coach and a person,” McVay said. “I’m so grateful for him. He’s been an instrumental part in everything that is right about the Rams the last five years.”

During his acceptance speech on Thursday night, Whitworth called on his peers to step up their level of community service.

“It’s called an investment,” Whitworth said. “You can apply these three things to any charity or cause you have a passion for. You can invest your time, you can invest your finances or you can invest your voice. Doesn’t matter which, we just have to keep investing in each other. Let your heart lead you all the way.”

Whitworth doesn’t yet know if he will play a 17th NFL season. He said he would talk to him family after the Super Bowl.

“I’ve cried wolf so many times, they may not want to listen,” Whitworth said per past retirement conservations. “At some point, it will actually happen.”

–The Rams placed tight end Tyler Higbee (knee) and offensive tackle Joe Noteboom (chest) on injured reserve Friday, ending their seasons.

Higbee was injured against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, and his chances of playing didn’t sound good after McVay said Monday that he wouldn’t practice all week. Noteboom was injured one week earlier in the divisional round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Los Angeles activated running back Darrell Henderson Jr. (knee) and defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day (pectoral) from IR.

–With Henderson set to play Sunday for the first time since being injured in Week 16, the Rams suddenly have what McVay termed the “full arsenal” in backfield options.

Cam Akers returned from a July Achilles injury during the final week of the regular season and has carried the ball 54 times for 151 yards in the playoffs. Sony Michel led the Rams in the regular season with 845 rushing yards and Henderson had 688.

McVay believes it is a good dilemma and said the Rams would go with the “hot hand.”

McVay has seen Michel stand out on the Super Bowl stage but from the opposite side. As a rookie, Michel carried 18 times for 94 yards and one score when the New England Patriots notched a 13-3 victory over Rams in the Super Bowl after the 2018 season.

Akers is just happy to be a part of this game after a surprisingly fast rehab period.

“I knew the chance was real of going to the Super Bowl,” Akers said of his commitment to return this season. “I knew we had a good chance of going. I knew we had a good chance of making that run, and I wanted to be a part of it. I’m blessed to be able to.”

–Rams safety Eric Weddle is playing in his final NFL game after a return to the club following two seasons of retirement.

Earlier this week, Weddle detailed how he was doing nothing but sitting on the couch last month prior to getting the call from Los Angeles to see if he was fit enough to play.

However, people familiar with Weddle knew his lap wasn’t empty when he was sitting on the couch. After all, this is the same NFL star who has fessed up to eating a gallon of ice cream after victories.

Thus, it’s no surprise what Weddle’s post-Super Bowl routine will be like.

“I’m going to do nothing but ice cream celebrations for a week to make up for these last five weeks,” Weddle said Friday in reference to his time with the Rams. “I will make up for it when it is all said and done. The celebrations will happen.”

Rams activate WR Odell Beckham Jr., 5 others from COVID-19 list

The Los Angeles Rams activated receiver Odell Beckham Jr., running back Darrell Henderson and four other players from the COVID-19 list on Saturday.

Los Angeles also activated cornerback Donte’ Deayon, linebacker Justin Hollins, tight end Brycen Hopkins and offensive tackle Alaric Jackson from the COVID-19 list. The Rams added offensive tackle Joe Noteboom and defensive back Robert Rochell to the list, leaving the team with 25 players on it.

The large outbreak prompted the Rams’ home game against the Seattle Seahawks to be moved from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday night.

Jacksonville Jaguars defenders Myles Jack and C.J. Henderson were full practice participants on Thursday after being limited one day earlier.

Jack (ankle) and Henderson (shoulder) should be in line to play against the Detroit Lions at home on Sunday. Both players missed Sunday’s 30-14 loss to the Houston Texans.

Defensive end Josh Allen (knee) was a limited participant for the second straight day. He also missed the game against Houston.

Receiver DJ Chark Jr. (ankle) missed his second consecutive practice. He departed the game against the Texans’ due to the injury.
