Cowboys’ Jerry Jones claims Odell Beckham Jr. ‘isn’t ready to play’

Odell Beckham Jr. was not ready to play football in the estimation of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Jones and the Cowboys signed 10-year veteran wide receiver T.Y. Hilton on Monday, one week after the team hosted Beckham in hopes of reaching a deal for the rest of the season and beyond.

Jones said Tuesday in an interview with 105.3 FM in Dallas that Beckham “isn’t ready to play right now.” Jones said the Cowboys have interest in Beckham when he’s ready to suit up, but believes that might not happen until spring 2023.

Beckham is recovering from a torn ACL, a knee injury he has had before.

In Hilton, Jones said the Cowboys have a “receiver that the defense will have to honor.”

The former Colts’ deep threat hasn’t played this season and found little interest as an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. He missed seven games in 2021 due to multiple leg injuries.

Hilton could play Sunday at Jacksonville, when Jones said he expects offensive tackle Tyron Smith to return from surgery and make his season debut.

“As I see it right now, he’ll be playing Sunday,” Jones said of Smith, whose return would coincide with the loss of right tackle Terence Steele (torn ACL) to a season-ending injury.

Cowboys sign veteran WR T.Y. Hilton

An out-of-work wide receiver signed on the dotted line with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, but it wasn’t Odell Beckham Jr.

Four-time Pro Bowl receiver T.Y. Hilton, who spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Colts, signed with Dallas on Monday afternoon. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday night he was keeping the door open for the franchise to add Beckham, but it’s not clear if the Hilton deal shifts the team’s thinking.

Hilton, 33, was a third-round pick in 2012.

He has not played this season but caught 23 passes for 331 yards with three touchdowns in 2021, when he missed seven games. Hilton had multiple injuries — ankle, quadriceps, calf — over his final two seasons.

A Pro Bowl pick from 2014-17, Hilton posted five 1,000-yard seasons with Indianapolis and compiled 9,691 career receiving yards, which ranks third behind Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison.

The Cowboys activated veteran James Washington for the first time last week in a win over the Houston Texans and also have Noah Brown, who made two significant plays in the second half to help Dallas avoid an upset loss to Houston.

Colts activate Quenton Nelson, rule out T.Y. Hilton vs. 49ers

Indianapolis Colts left guard Quenton Nelson was activated off injured reserve on Saturday and is expected to play against San Francisco on Sunday night.

The Colts (2-4) also placed safety Julian Blackmon on injured reserve and ruled out wide receiver T.Y. Hilton for the road game against the 49ers (2-3).

Nelson, a three-time All-Pro, has missed the past three games with a high-ankle sprain.

Prior to the injury, Nelson started 51 consecutive games to begin his career after being taken by the Colts with the sixth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old has made the Pro Bowl in each season of his career so far.

Blackmon, 23, sustained a torn Achilles in practice on Wednesday.

He has 34 tackles (two for loss), one pass defended and one forced fumble in six starts in 2021.

The 2020 third-round pick stepped into a starting role when Malik Hooker injured his Achilles last season.

Hilton, 31, was placed on IR in early September after neck surgery. He made his season debut last Sunday and had four catches for 80 yards before sustaining a quadriceps injury in a 31-3 victory over the Houston Texans.

Hilton has 612 catches for 9,440 yards and 50 touchdowns in 134 career games with the Colts. He made the Pro Bowl four straight years from 2014-17.

Also on Saturday, the Colts elevated wide receiver Keke Coutee and safety Josh Jones to the active roster from the practice squad.

Colts’ G Quenton Nelson likely for 49ers; WR T.Y. Hilton iffy

Indianapolis Colts star left guard Quenton Nelson got through the week without a setback and is expected to be activated off injured reserve to play against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

Nelson, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has missed the past three games due to a high-ankle sprain.

“He handled it well, he looked good,” Colts coach Frank Reich said of Nelson on Friday. “I expect all systems will be go.”

The status of receiver T.Y. Hilton (quadriceps) remains in doubt even as the club listed him as questionable for the game. Hilton didn’t participate in practices all week and a decision on his availability could come as soon as Saturday.

“We’re not going to rule him out, we’re going to evaluate it tomorrow,” Reich said. “It’s probably not likely that he’s gonna go, but I’m not going to rule it out just yet. … We pushed it today a little bit to see if he was close, and because it’s T.Y., we just want to wait one more day before making any determination.”

The Colts ruled out five players for Sunday’s game: offensive tackle Braden Smith (foot, thumb), defensive end Kemoko Turay (groin), cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (ankle), running back Jordan Wilkins (non-football illness) and safety Julian Blackmon (Achilles).

Blackmon suffered the season-ending torn Achilles in practice on Wednesday. He is expected to be placed on injured reserve when the Colts activate Nelson.

Colts GM: WR T.Y. Hilton to IR after neck procedure

T.Y. Hilton is on injured reserve following a “minimally invasive” neck procedure, Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard said Wednesday.

The Colts re-signed Hilton in the offseason, but he has been slowed during training camp. Ballard said the good news for the Colts and Hilton is that the 31-year-old receiver is already feeling “instant relief.”

Ballard said “it was not a major procedure,” adding Hilton could be back after missing three weeks, which could put him on schedule to play Week 4.

Head coach Frank Reich had painted a more complicated picture on Sunday.

“It was a disc issue, so that’s a complicated issue. More meetings, more evaluation to come, more opinions to come….He will miss some games, we don’t know exactly how many. We’re optimistic it’s not season-ending.”

The Colts also placed quarterback Sam Ehlinger on injured reserve with a sprained ACL. Reich said the rookie would likely miss a month or more.
