49ers place RB Coleman (knee) on injured reserve

The San Francisco 49ers placed running back Tevin Coleman on injured reserve with an ailing knee, the team announced Saturday.

Coleman joined defensive end Nick Bosa and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas in being placed on injured reserve coming out of San Francisco’s 31-13 victory over the New York Jets.

The 27-year-old Coleman is eligible to return for the team’s Oct. 18 game against the Los Angeles Rams, although coach Kyle Shanahan noted earlier in the week that he might be sidelined for an additional game. Should that be the case, Coleman would return for the 49ers’ contest at the New England Patriots on Oct. 25.

Coleman has rushed 18 times for 30 yards and has three catches for 34 yards this season for San Francisco (1-1). He gained 724 yards from scrimmage and scored seven TDs in his first season with the 49ers in 2019.

Also on Saturday, the 49ers promoted offensive lineman Hroniss Grasu from the practice squad to the active roster. They also activated running back JaMycal Hasty and linebacker Joe Walker from the team’s practice squad.

Grasu, 29, appeared in 18 games (13 starts) during his time with the Chicago Bears (2015-17), Miami Dolphins (2018), Baltimore Ravens (2018, 2019) and Tennessee Titans (2019).

Hasty, 24, is expected to serve as the team’s third running back behind Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson for Sunday’s game at the New York Giants (0-2).

Walker, 27, adds depth with fellow linebacker Dre Greenlaw ruled out with a thigh injury.

49ers DE Ford (neck) ruled out vs. Jets

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Dee Ford was downgraded from questionable to out for Sunday’s game against the host New York Jets.

Ford, who is nursing a neck injury, recorded three tackles while playing on 46 defensive snaps in San Francisco’s 24-20 season-opening loss to the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday.

Defensive end Kerry Hyder is expected to see additional playing time in place of the 29-year-old Ford, who has collected 154 tackles and 11 forced fumbles in 79 career games (43 starts) with the Kansas City Chiefs and 49ers.

Two-time Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle (knee) and cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring) were ruled out against the Jets (0-1) on Friday. The 49ers also placed cornerback Richard Sherman on injured reserve earlier in the week.

Also on Saturday, the 49ers promoted center Hroniss Grasu from the practice squad.
