Reports: Texas QB Hudson Card to enter transfer portal

Texas quarterback Hudson Card, once the starter for the Longhorns, is entering the transfer portal, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

A top recruit in the 2020 class, Card has three years of eligibility left.

Card was the starting quarterback at Texas at the beginning of the 2021 season before relinquishing the job to Casey Thompson, who transferred to Nebraska following the season. In summer camp before the 2022 campaign, he lost the contest for starting QB to Quinn Ewers.

Card, a redshirt sophomore, threw for 590 yards and five touchdowns in seven games in 2021. He played in all 12 games in 2022, completing 69.4 percent of his passes for 928 yards with six touchdowns and one interception.

The 247Sports composite ranked Card as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2020. He played his high school football in Lake Travis, Texas.

Card likely will be a top quarterback in the transfer portal, but in 2023, he probably would have found himself odd-man out at Texas. Ewers has one more season before he is eligible for the NFL draft, and coach Steve Sarkisian has a commitment form Arch Manning, the No. 1 player in the 247Sports composite 2023 class rankings.

Arch is the nephew of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning.

Texas finished the regular season at 8-4 (6-3 Big 12) and is waiting to learn its bowl destination.

Quinn Ewers wins QB competition at Texas

Quinn Ewers has won the quarterback competition at Texas.

Coach Steve Sarkisian named him Friday as the starter for the Longhorns’ Sept. 3 opener against Louisiana-Monroe.

Ewers, an Ohio State transfer, had been engaged in a competition with Hudson Card, who was the returnee at the position after Casey Thompson entered the transfer portal.

The 247Sports composite listed Ewers as the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2021. A redshirt freshman, he spent last season at Ohio State.

Card was the starting quarterback at Texas at the beginning of the 2021 season before relinquishing the job to Thompson, who was named the starter at Nebraska on Friday.

Sarkisian told ESPN earlier this week that he was close to picking a quarterback and that he didn’t intend to run a system of rotating quarterbacks.

“I think it’s hard for a quarterback to get into rhythm that way, and I think you play differently knowing, ‘Hey, I don’t know how many throws I’m going to get,’ and you take too many chances,” Sarkisian said to ESPN. “I just don’t think the decision-making is very good.”

Card, a redshirt sophomore, threw for 590 yards and five touchdowns in seven games last season. Ewers didn’t throw a pass for the Buckeyes.

From Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, Ewers was part of the Class of 2022 and reclassified to the 2021 class. Originally committed to Texas, he switched gears to Ohio State.

The move allowed Ewers to sign a NIL deal for $1.4 million, skirting a Texas law that didn’t allow high school students to benefit from name, image and likeness earnings.

Freshman QB Hudson Card will start Texas’ opener

New Texas coach Steve Sarkisian announced his decision Monday regarding the quarterback position. Actually, he announced two decisions.

Redshirt freshman Hudson Card will draw the season-opening start Saturday for the 21st-ranked Longhorns against 23rd-ranked Louisiana in Austin, Texas, but junior Casey Thompson will see action in the contest, too.

“We’ll continue to evaluate from there, but that’s the direction we’re going this weekend.” Sarkisian said.

The coach added, “Hudson is a very talented young man. He’s got great work ethic. It’s really not a knock on Casey. Both guys really started to perform well after that first scrimmage. It was a tough call, but I think, in general, you try to make the best decision for the program at that time. …

“The good part for both of our guys is that we’re improving on offense. Incorporating the tight ends has been helpful. The receiver picture is starting to clear itself up and what we have at running back. All in all, I think the offense is starting to elevate its play and it’s helping the quarterbacks.”

Thompson appeared in four games in 2019 and three games in 2020. Overall, the Oklahoma City native has completed 20 of 29 passes for 309 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

Thompson’s top performance came in the 2020 Alamo Bowl, when he was 8 of 10 for 170 yards and four touchdowns after starter Sam Ehlinger exited due to an injury. Thompson led Texas to a 55-23 win over Colorado.

Card, an Austin native, was a highly touted prospect out of Austin’s Lake Travis High School. He has appeared in two career games for the Longhorns, completing 1-of-3 passes for five yards and rushing four times for 11 yards.

Reports: Hudson Card to start at QB for Texas

Redshirt freshman Hudson Card will start at quarterback when Texas hosts Louisiana to open the 2021 season on Sept. 4, multiple outlets reported Saturday.

Steve Sarkisian, in his first season as head coach of the Longhorns, reportedly informed Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson of his decision Friday night. Both quarterbacks are expected to play in the opener.

For the Longhorns, the move is significant. They are breaking in their first quarterback since 2017, when Sam Ehlinger took the job and started 46 games over four seasons.

Horns247 reported quarterback was the final position up in the air for Sarkisian, with the remainder of the depth chart decided last week.

Thompson had gotten most first-team reps in the first two weeks of fall camp, but Card reportedly threw fewer interceptions and protected the ball better, and this week Card got the most reps with the first-team offense. Card, who was listed as third-string quarterback behind Ehlinger and Thompson last season, had been recruited by Alabama when Sarkisian was the Tide’s offensive coordinator.

A local product from Lake Travis, Texas, Card was ranked as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2020, per the 247Sports composite. Thompson was the No. 14 dual-threat QB in the 2018 class.
