UNC chancellor ‘delighted’ at attention Bill Belichick has brought program

North Carolina fully expected the hiring of NFL coaching legend Bill Belichick to put a spotlight on its football program.

The fact that the coach’s girlfriend has grabbed much of that spotlight has not dampened the school’s enthusiasm, however. After all, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, right?

“We wanted when we hired Coach Belichick, to bring Carolina football to another level,” UNC chancellor Lee Roberts said Thursday, according to a Charlotte Observer post on X. “… We increased the price of our season tickets and we sold them out. … We’re delighted about all the attention being paid to Carolina football.”

As the 73-year-old Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach of the New England Patriots, prepares for his first season in the collegiate ranks, much of the attention instead has gone to his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

According to reports, Hudson was perhaps overly involved in a “Hard Knocks” deal that fell through. She also sparked controversy during Belichick’s April appearance on “CBS Sunday Morning” by interrupting the interview over questions about their personal life.

Belichick has defended Hudson and recently insisted that she “doesn’t have anything to do with UNC football.”

North Carolina officials may be delighted by the added attention, but the fans will want to see results on the field.

North Carolina finished 6-7 last season in coach Mack Brown’s final campaign. The Tar Heels lost their bowl game for the fifth straight year.

Report: UNC ‘Hard Knocks’ scuttled over involvement of Bill Belichick’s girlfriend

Plans for the cameras to roll at North Carolina for the first-ever college season of “Hard Knocks” were called off over worries about the involvement of coach Bill Belichick’s girlfriend.

That is according to The Athletic, which reported Wednesday that 24-year-old Jordon Hudson wanted to be heavily involved in the production.

Backed by documents, The Athletic said NFL Films was set to start taping March 1 on campus in Chapel Hill, N.C., to document Belichick’s first season with his team. However, two days later, North Carolina’s lawyers received an email from Jessica Boddy, the NFL’s vice president for commercial operations and business affairs that the project was off.

“The conversation took a turn we were not comfortable with,” Boddy wrote in the email, according to The Athletic. She also is an executive producer of “Hard Knocks.”

The university said it was not a decision by its staff to nix “Hard Knocks” and added it was more appropriate for the production company to comment. The NFL, which oversees the show, declined to comment, and Boddy and Hudson did not respond to messages left, per The Athletic.

Hudson and Belichick, 73, reportedly have been in a relationship since early 2023, People reported.

But it is the question of how they met that put Hudson squarely in the spotlight this week.

In an interview that aired Sunday on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Belichick discussed his new book and more. But when CBS’ Tony Dokoupil, who described Hudson as a “constant presence” during the interview, asked how the couple met, she balked.

“We’re not talking about this,” Hudson said.

Hudson apparently has moved right in as first lady of Tar Heels football. Reporting over the past few weeks said she is being copied on emails and other communications to Belichick from UNC staff, and she has appeared on the practice field. She lists herself on emails as chief operating officer of Belichick Productions, though The Athletic said it couldn’t find any registered business in that name.

The Athletic reported that Belichick himself wanted the “Hard Knocks” gig, and North Carolina stood to be paid $200,000 in fees for the five-part series to run on HBO.

The show was supposed to be announced during the NFL Scouting Combine.

Players who were coached by Belichick during his career as a six-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots are taking sides in the saga.

Speaking on their “Dudes on Dudes” podcast, retired Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman and tight end Rob Gronkowski defended Belichick and his partnership with Hudson.

“People are giving an unfair reality of what’s going on,” Edelman said, contending Hudson was serving as Belichick’s “representative” during the CBS interview and that she interrupted the conversation “just like any PR person would jump in when there’s an unnecessary question that probably [they] didn’t go over in the pre-production meeting.”

Retired linebacker Ted Johnson, who played for New England from 1995 to 2004, had a much different take when he spoke to Boston radio station WEEI on Tuesday. He said Hudson was a source of embarrassment to Belichick and suggested her presence had cost him a chance at an NFL coaching job after he and the Patriots split after the 2023 season.

“I hold college coaches to a higher standard than I do NFL coaches when it comes to morally, they are supposed to leaders of men, set a good example that kind of thing,” Johnson said, according to transcription of his comments by the New York Post. “I’m surprised UNC never called Atlanta on why they passed on hiring Bill Belichick. My feeling is that the Atlanta Falcons are kinda looking at the UNC and going, ‘You should have called us.’

“I say all that to say this: I think the … Tar Heels should consider firing Bill Belichick. They should consider letting him go at this point. It’s a lot of money and they’re deep into, obviously, their preparation for next year, but I look at Bill Belichick and I wonder if he’s fit to coach an NFL team, let alone fit to coach a college team which, again, I put more onus on the character and personality and just overall character, if you will, of a college coach than I do a pro coach. I’m worried that Bill Belichick just isn’t fit to coach college kids and UNC should consider cutting ties with Bill Belichick.”

In January, Belichick signed a five-year contract with North Carolina. Only the first three years are guaranteed with $10 million per year in salary and $3.5 million in bonuses possible.

Former TCU WR Jordan Hudson transferring to SMU

Former TCU wide receiver Jordan Hudson is heading to the other side of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and transferring to SMU, he announced Sunday on Instagram.

Hudson was a top-100 recruit in the class of 2022 out of Garland High School in suburban Dallas. He originally committed to SMU before flipping to TCU.

He entered the transfer portal in April after catching 14 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns with the Horned Frogs in 2022. He made two receptions for 34 yards in the College Football Playoff semifinal win over Michigan following the 2022 season.

Hudson, who has three years of eligibility remaining with the Mustangs, was ranked as the third-best player still available in the transfer portal by The Athletic.

Reports: Cardinals releasing WR Chosen Anderson

The Arizona Cardinals are releasing wide receiver Chosen (nee Robby, Robbie) Anderson and offensive lineman Rodney Hudson, NFL Network reported Monday.

The Cardinals will free up $12 million in cap space on Anderson. Hudson, who reduced his salary to $2 million in January, reportedly is mulling retirement.

Anderson, 29, played in 10 games with the Cardinals after a midseason trade with the Carolina Panthers. He caught just seven passes for 76 yards with the Cardinals. He had no guaranteed money remaining on his deal.

Anderson has 375 catches for 4,956 yards and 29 touchdowns in 111 career games (86 starts) with three teams.

Anderson changed his name to Chosen last month, after an earlier switch from Robby to Robbie.

Hudson, 33, is a three-time Pro Bowl lineman who played in just four games last season due to injuries. He was drafted in the second round of the 2011 draft by Kansas City. He played six seasons with the Raiders, earning three Pro Bowl nods.

Commanders sign LB Khaleke Hudson to roster

The Washington Commanders signed linebacker Khaleke Hudson to the active roster on Friday.

A fifth-round draft pick by Washington in 2020, Hudson was one of the team’s final roster cuts and signed to the practice squad. He has played 30 career games (three starts) and has 24 tackles and two quarterback hits.

Hudson, 24, is taking the roster spot of rookie cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, who was placed on injured reserve Friday with a knee injury. Castro-Fields, 23, has appeared in two games and played 19 snaps — 13 of them on special teams.

The Commanders also signed defensive back Troy Apke to the practice squad. Apke, 27, was a fourth-round pick by Washington in 2018. He was released in training camp, signed to the practice squad and released again on Oct. 5.

In his Washington career, Apke has appeared in 50 games (nine starts) and has 68 tackles, four passes defensed and an interception.

Cardinals C Rodney Hudson is ‘unexcused’ no-show at minicamp

Arizona Cardinals center Rodney Hudson didn’t appear Tuesday for the first day of the team’s mandatory training camp.

Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury termed Hudson’s absence as “unexcused.”

Kingsbury declined to divulge details but said, “We’re working through something with him.”

Hudson, who turns 33 in July, wasn’t attending the team’s voluntary Organized Team Activities leading up to minicamp.

Hudson was acquired by the Cardinals from the Las Vegas Raiders prior to last season.

He signed a three-year, $30 million extension with $16 million guaranteed just 14 months ago.

Hudson is slated to earn $10.85 million in base salary this season.

A three-time Pro Bowler with the Raiders, Hudson has played in 155 games (139 starts) over 11 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs (2011-14), Raiders (2015-20) and Cardinals.

Center Rodney Hudson was traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Arizona Cardinals for a third-round pick on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

Hudson was informed he would be released earlier in the week, but the Raiders reconsidered when the Cardinals increased their trade offer to a third-rounder, NFL Network reported. The Cardinals announced the move and said the terms of the deal include a seventh-round pick being returned from the Raiders.

A three-time Pro Bowl pick, Hudson turns 32 in July and twice was awarded with contracts from the Raiders that made him the highest-paid player at the position. That includes a three-year, $33.75 million extension with the Raiders in August 2019.

Hudson missed only one game the past five seasons. He joined the Raiders in 2015 as an unrestricted free agent after four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Cardinals have been busy adding veterans with name value.

Also on Wednesday, Arizona agreed to a one-year deal with wide receiver A.J. Green worth up to $8.5 million with $6 million guaranteed, ESPN reported.

Green, 32, struggled to regain his form last season after making the Pro Bowl in his first seven seasons in Cincinnati. He had 47 catches for 523 yards with two touchdowns in 2020.

Earlier in the month, Arizona made a major splash with the addition of defensive lineman J.J. Watt. Watt requested his release from the Houston Texans and chose to sign a two-year, $31 million deal with the Cardinals.

Three-time Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson was informed he will be released by the Las Vegas Raiders, according to multiple reports.

In a complete overhaul of the front five, Hudson becomes the fourth regular starter on the Raiders’ offensive line to hit the market with only offensive tackle Kolton Miller remaining.

Hudson’s cap charge of more than $15 million can be spread over the next two seasons as a June 1 designated release.

Hudson will turn 32 in July and twice was awarded with contracts from the Raiders that made him the highest-paid player at the position. That includes a three-year, $33.75 million extension with the Raiders in August 2019.
