Chiefs open practice window for RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The Kansas City Chiefs opened the 21-day practice window for running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

The Chiefs’ transaction came on Wednesday. They will have 21 days to activate or shut down Edwards-Helaire, who began the season on the reserve/non-football illness list.

In August, Edwards-Helaire revealed on social media and also shared with reporters at training camp that he has been impacted by post-traumatic stress disorder since December 2018.

“Sometimes I’m admitted into the hospital, something like I can’t stop throwing up and it’s just, I (don’t) know (anything) pretty much to stop it,” he said, per ESPN.

“Real bad dehydration … but it’s really just mentally just not being there,” he said, adding alert teammates can notice that, “‘OK, Clyde’s not laughing, he’s not giggling, he’s not himself.’”

Edwards-Helaire, 25, did not disclose the cause of his PTSD, other than to cite “a self-defense situation” that he went through in college.

The Chiefs (4-0) are adjusting to the loss of running back Isiah Pacheco, who underwent surgery on his fractured fibula last month and is expected be sidelined until at least November.

Kareem Hunt rushed for 69 yards and fellow running back Samaje Perine scored a touchdown in Kansas City’s 17-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The Chiefs selected Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU. In 48 games (32 starts) over four seasons, he has rushed 441 times for 1,845 yards with 12 touchdowns. He’s added 765 receiving yards and seven scores.

Kansas City hosts the New Orleans Saints (2-2) on Monday night.

Chiefs put Isiah Pacheco on IR, Kareem Hunt on practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs placed running back Isiah Pacheco on injured reserve Wednesday.

Pacheco is expected to undergo surgery on his fractured fibula Wednesday, three days after he sustained the injury during Kansas City’s 26-25 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The move on Wednesday guarantees Pacheco will sit out at least the next four games.

Reports have Pacheco sidelined for 6-8 weeks. However, Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters Wednesday that he could not relay a precise timeline for the running back’s expected absence.

The Chiefs addressed their backfield on Wednesday by signing Keaontay Ingram to the active roster and fellow running back Kareem Hunt to the practice squad.

“We’ll get (Hunt) in there and get him some work. Kind of get him back in the swing of playing and we’ll just see,” Reid said. “We’ve got to get him in a position to where he’s ready to play either this, next week or the following week.”

Pacheco, 25, had 90 yards on 19 carries and caught five passes for 21 yards on Sunday. He has a team-high 135 rushing yards through two games.

Since being drafted in the seventh round in 2022, Pacheco has won two Super Bowl championships and racked up 2,328 yards from scrimmage with 15 touchdowns in 33 games (26 starts). He has another 635 yards and four TDs from scrimmage in seven playoff starts.

Veteran Samaje Perine, 29, is listed as Pacheco’s backup on the depth chart but played sparingly on Sunday. He’s viewed as a third-down back.

Undrafted rookie Carson Steele, 21, carried seven times for 24 yards and lost a fumble against Cincinnati.

Hunt, 29, was a third-round pick by the Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft and spent most of the first two years of his professional career in Kansas City, including a Pro Bowl rookie season in which he posted 1,327 rushing yards to lead the league.

Kansas City released Hunt in November 2018 after a video surfaced of him shoving and kicking a woman in a hotel. After authorities did not move forward with criminal charges, Hunt rebooted his career with the Cleveland Browns in 2019.

“At the end of the day, I root for the person. He’s become a better and better person,” star quarterback Patrick Mahomes said of Hunt. “I’m glad to have him back in the building.”

Last season, Hunt appeared in 15 games with two starts for the Browns. He was re-signed after starter Nick Chubb went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 2. He rushed 135 times for 411 yards with nine touchdowns and also caught 15 passes for 84 yards.

Hunt was a free agent when he underwent surgery in January for a ruptured adductor that apparently plagued him much of the 2023 season.

In 91 career games (38 starts) with the Chiefs (2017-18) and Browns, Hunt has gained 6,326 yards from scrimmage with 57 scores.

Ingram, 24, rushed for 74 yards and had four catches for 26 yards in eight games (one start) last season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Dolphins put LB Jerome Baker on IR, rule out RG Robert Hunt

The Miami Dolphins placed linebacker Jerome Baker on injured reserve on Saturday and also ruled out right guard Robert Hunt for Monday’s home game against the Tennessee Titans.

Baker injured the MCL in his knee during last Saturday’s victory over the Washington Commanders. He will have to miss at least four games by being placed on the IR.

Miami coach Mike McDaniel termed it a tough decision as the Dolphins can only activate one more player from IR this season.

“See, it’s hard,” McDaniel said of Baker’s possible return. “That’d be me accessing the crystal ball. I think that that very well could be the outcome, but you’re hesitant with the way the season goes, the roster needs and him and his recovery. You just want to temper that a little bit. To assume that is not irresponsible, but I wouldn’t put money on it because it’s not known, if that makes sense.”

Baker, 26, has been one of Miami’s steadiest defensive players during his six-year NFL career. He has recorded 100 or more tackles three times and has 22.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and five interceptions in 93 career games (82 starts).

Baker has 69 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two interceptions (one returned for touchdown) in 12 games this season.

Hunt, 27, aggravated a hamstring injury against the Commanders. It was the same injury that caused him to miss two games last month.

The fourth-year pro has started 54 of 60 games played in the NFL.

The Dolphins listed left tackle Terron Armstead (knee/ankle) and free safety Jevon Holland (both knees) as questionable for Monday’s game.

Miami also signed linebacker Calvin Munson off the practice squad of the New England Patriots. This is Munson’s third stint with the Dolphins.

Munson has 88 tackles in 46 career games (seven starts) since breaking in with the New York Giants in 2017. He has played in 22 games for the Dolphins and 10 for the Patriots. Munson had one tackle in three games for New England this season.

Also, Tennessee ruled out cornerback Kristian Fulton (hamstring) and tight end Josh Whyle (knee). The Titans had previously ruled out star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons (knee).

Browns coach: RB Kareem Hunt will play Sunday

Newly re-signed running back Kareem Hunt will see action Sunday for the Cleveland Browns against the Tennessee Titans.

“Kareem’s going to play. He’s ready to play,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday.

How much he plays remains to be determined as the Browns adjust to the loss of four-time 1,000-yard rusher Nick Chubb to a season-ending knee injury.

Hunt, 28, signed a reported one-year deal worth up to $4 million on Wednesday to rejoin Cleveland, where he played the previous four seasons.

Hunt has rushed for 4,025 yards and 31 touchdowns and caught 211 passes for 1,806 yards and 17 TDs in 76 games (36 starts) with the Kansas City Chiefs (2017-18) and Browns.

Hunt led the NFL with 1,327 rushing yards as a Chiefs rookie in 2017, earning a Pro Bowl selection and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Kansas City drafted the Ohio native in the third round out of Toledo.

While Hunt’s role is unclear, Stefanski said multiple times this week that Jerome Ford will be the featured back for the Browns (1-1) on Sunday against the visiting Titans (1-1).

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt not betting against Travis Kelce playing

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has a hunch about Travis Kelce’s status for the Thursday night opener against the Detroit Lions.

Kelce, diagnosed with a bone bruise, is scheduled to test his knee prior to the game before a collective decision on whether to play or use the extra days between Week 1 and Week 2 to get healthy.

The tight end was listed as questionable on the team’s first official injury report.

“I know he had a little bit of a setback the other day with a minor knee injury. We hope that he’ll be able to go tonight,” Hunt said in an NFL Network interview Thursday. “He’ll be a game-time decision. But he’s somebody who loves to compete, so I wouldn’t bet against him being on the field tonight.”

Kelce said earlier this week he feels the excitement of the start of a new season just like he’s a rookie taking the field for the first time.

The Chiefs use Kelce as a receiving weapon, and he stepped into the lead option role in 2022 following the trade that sent wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

Kelce’s energy in Week 1 was on display last season with eight receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. He caught six passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns in the 2021 opener and went for 6-50-1 in 2020.

Kelce, 33, recorded career-best totals in catches (110) and touchdowns (12) to go along with a team-leading 1,338 receiving yards in 17 games last season.

An eight-time Pro Bowl selection, Kelce has totaled 814 catches for 10,344 yards and 69 touchdowns in 144 career games (137 starts) with the Chiefs.

Saints host Kareem Hunt with RB needs multiplying

Free agent running back Kareem Hunt is scheduled to visit the Saints on Monday as questions arise around the team’s depth at the position.

Starter Alvin Kamara is suspended until Week 4 and Eno Benjamin will miss the entire season after rupturing his Achilles on Saturday.

Hunt, the primary backup to Nick Chubb with the Browns last season, is a former NFL rushing champion with the Kansas City Chiefs. He joined Cleveland in 2019 and served an eight-game suspension for domestic violence. Hunt had 123 carries for 468 yards and three touchdowns in 2022.

The Saints have other options at the ready, including newcomer Jamaal Williams and third-round pick Kendre Miller.

A third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Hunt led the league with 1,327 yards and scored eight touchdowns as a rookie. He turned 28 on Sunday.

Kamara was suspended for his role in a fight in Las Vegas, which fell under the umbrella of the NFL off-field conduct policy.

Chargers sign former USFL C/G Cameron Hunt

The Los Angeles Chargers signed former USFL center/guard Cameron Hunt on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman earned all-league honors with the USFL champion Birmingham Stallions in 2022.

Undrafted out of Oregon in 2017, Hunt spent time on NFL practice squads with the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and then-Oakland Raiders.

To make room on the roster, the Chargers waived offensive tackle Andrew Trainer with an injury designation.

Jadeveon Clowney among 8 Browns cleared from COVID list

The Cleveland Browns activated defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and seven others from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday.

Running back Kareem Hunt, guard Drew Forbes, safety Ronnie Harrison Jr., cornerback Troy Hill, defensive tackle Malik McDowell, left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. and linebacker Mack Wilson also were cleared from the league’s health and safety protocols.

The short-handed Browns fell 24-22 to the host Green Bay Packers on Christmas Day.

Cleveland (7-8) has dropped to the 12th seed in the AFC playoff chase heading into its Week 17 Monday night game at the Pittsburgh Steelers (7-7-1).

The Browns on Monday also placed linebacker Elijah Lee on the reserve/COVID-19 list and restored safety Nate Meadors from the practice squad/COVID list.

Browns ground out win over Texans

Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt combined for 230 yards on the ground and the Cleveland Browns slugged out a 10-7 victory over the visiting Houston Texans on Sunday.

Chubb and Hunt recorded 19 attempts each against the Texans’ 32nd-ranked run defense. After Houston (2-7) closed to within three points on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson to Pharaoh Brown with 4:59 remaining, Chubb sealed the win with a 59-yard, third-down run to the Houston 1, wisely running out of bounds so that Cleveland could exhaust the game clock.

Chubb rushed for 126 yards in his first action since Week 4 due to a knee injury. Hunt added 104 yards for the Browns (6-3).

Watson finished 20-of-30 for 163 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked twice. The Texans totaled only 243 yards.

Cleveland needed one impressive possession to extend to a 10-0 lead in the fourth quarter, covering 64 yards in nine plays and just over five minutes. Baker Mayfield completed a 21-yard pass to Rashard Higgins that moved the chains on third-and-18 before a pass interference penalty on Texans cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III presented Cleveland another first down.

Chubb took over from there, gaining 35 yards on four carries including a 9-yard touchdown following a nifty cutback that gave the Browns a two-possession lead with 13:32 left to play.

The Browns’ lone touchdown drive followed a curious decision by Texans interim coach Romeo Crennel to attempt a 45-yard field goal in blustery conditions on fourth-and-2. Ka’imi Fairbairn pushed his kick wide left and the Browns immediately extended their tenuous 3-0 cushion.

The Browns’ opening possession, capped by a 41-yard Cody Parkey field goal with 8:31 left in the first quarter, stalled on an intentional grounding penalty against Mayfield on third and short.

Houston seemingly mounted a response with a methodical 14-play march to the Cleveland 2. But on fourth down, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett stuffed Watson on a quarterback draw, resulting in a 2-yard loss and a turnover on downs. The Texans sputtered for the remainder of the first half, amassing 96 yards total with 67 coming on the aforementioned, fruitless drive.
