Reports: Shedeur Sanders to start Browns’ preseason opener

The Cleveland Browns plan to give Shedeur Sanders the start at quarterback in their preseason opener Friday at the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland.com and ESPN reported Tuesday.

The news comes just one day after Cleveland listed Sanders as its QB4 on the unofficial depth chart for the week and reportedly signed free agent QB Tyler Huntley.

However, Kenny Pickett and Sanders’ fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel are both dealing with hamstring injuries, and the team’s other quarterback, 40-year-old Joe Flacco, does not have much to prove in a preseason setting.

It’s unclear how severe Pickett’s and Gabriel’s injuries are. Sanders and Huntley may split the workload at Carolina if the Browns do not plan to play their other quarterbacks.

Sanders, 23, was widely expected to be a first-round draft pick and one of the first quarterbacks selected last April. Instead, he dropped to the fifth round, where the Browns drafted him 144th overall — two rounds after they drafted Gabriel from Oregon.

After a prolific college career playing for his father Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Colorado, Shedeur Sanders is battling for a roster spot. As of Monday, Sanders was the only QB yet to be given first-team reps.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) doubtful to play against Jets

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets and considered highly unlikely to play.

This will be the second straight start Tagovailoa will miss. Tyler Huntley is slated to start the contest.

“We’ll approach it like Snoop’s starting,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said, referencing Huntley by his nickname. “It looks like the way that I approached the week (before) was probably smart. I see it as unlikely that Tua will see any action.”

The Dolphins (8-8) need a win to have any chance of making the playoffs, but McDaniel doesn’t feel the injury is something Tagovailoa can play through.

“A bruise would be like pain tolerance,” McDaniel said. “That’s something that I think Tua wishes it was just a pain issue. It’s quite literally being able to have the strength to do what we ask him to do, as well as protecting himself from very serious injury if we don’t treat it appropriately. I wouldn’t say it’s a bruise, but it’s a unique muscle issue as a result of the hip.”

Tagovailoa told reporters on Friday that he is frustrated to be dealing with an injury while the team’s playoffs hopes are on the line.

He told reporters that he would definitely play if the Dolphins have a playoff game next week. Miami must beat the Jets and have the Denver Broncos lose to the Kansas City Chiefs for the Dolphins to make the postseason field.

“If the cards play out the way they should, and the way we know and think they can, I’m going to be available next week,” Tagovailoa said. “There’s no ifs, ands, or buts. I’ll be playing for sure.”

Tagovaiola missed four games earlier in the season due to a concussion but has played well when healthy by passing for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games. He has completed a league-leading 72.9 percent of his passes.

Sunday would mark Huntley’s fifth start of the season. He has passed for 602 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while going 2-2 as the starter. He has also rushed for two scores.

Miami linebacker Anthony Walker (knee) will miss the contest. Receivers Tyreek Hill (wrist/illness), Jaylen Waddle (knee) and Dee Eskridge (finger) are questionable, as are left tackle Terron Armstead (knee), defensive tackle Calais Campbell (neck) and safety Jevon Holland (wrist).

Jets star cornerback Sauce Gardner (hamstring) will miss the contest.

Tyler Huntley could emerge as starter in Dolphins QB carousel

Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Thursday that he isn’t ready to name a starting quarterback for Monday night’s home game against the Tennessee Titans.

Skylar Thompson is dealing with a rib injury that McDaniel said is “pretty painful,” leaving Tyler Huntley and Tim Boyle as the leading candidates to be Miami’s QB1 this week.

Huntley recently joined the Dolphins while Boyle is on the practice squad. Boyle entered against the Seattle Seahawks last weekend after Thompson was injured but Huntley has more starting experience.

Huntley has made 10 NFL starts, including one in the postseason, which could have McDaniel leaning toward Huntley.

“I have in my mind what I think, how it could play out,” McDaniel said Thursday. “However, it’s a little premature for a multitude of reasons. And the very last being the competitive advantage.”

The Dolphins just signed Huntley 10 days ago, shortly after starter Tua Tagovailoa was sidelined with his latest concussion. But McDaniel said he can already sense the opportunity wouldn’t overwhelm Huntley.

“The game isn’t too big for him. Very encouraged by his progression,” he said. “We targeted him for a reason.”

Even so, Huntley isn’t fully up to speed with McDaniel’s offense. McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier will be watching practice performances closely.

“I’m feeling much more knowledgeable about exactly where he’s at over the course of the last half week and very, very encouraged,” McDaniel said of Huntley. “Chris and his staff, in conjunction with the coaching staff, we targeted him for a reason. And it’s a player that we’re very familiar with from the opponent’s standpoint.”

Huntley spent four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and made all his NFL starts while Lamar Jackson was sidelined with injuries. He went to training camp with the Cleveland Browns this year and was later released.

Dolphins defensive end Calais Campbell played with Huntley in Baltimore and is adamant the 26-year-old can handle the job.

“(Huntley) is a guy who is going to be very prepared,” Campbell said. “He can make every throw. I think he has good poise in the pocket and then he can create with his legs, which I think is something with the weapons we have at receiver and the way people have to guard us, when you can really make people pay with your legs, there’s going to be some opportunities there.”

Since a furious fourth-quarter rally to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1, the Dolphins were outscored 55-13 in back-to-back losses to the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks.

Miami hasn’t scored a touchdown in the past seven quarters and converted 1 of 12 third downs at Seattle. The Dolphins’ 205 yards total offense against the Seahawks is their lowest output since a 27-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 3, 2021. Miami had 203 total yards and 35 yards rushing in that game.

Thompson completed 13 of 19 passes for 107 yards and was sacked five times against Seattle before exiting. Boyle was 7 of 13 for 79 yards and sacked once.

McDaniel also said that left tackle Terron Armstead and cornerback Kendall Fuller remain in concussion protocol.

Reports: Dolphins placing QB Tua Tagovailoa on IR

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who left last Thursday’s game with another concussion, is being placed on injured reserve by the Miami Dolphins, NFL Network and ESPN reported Tuesday.

He will be required to miss at least the next four games, per league rules. With the Dolphins having a bye in Week 6, the earliest Tagovailoa could return to game action would be the Oct. 27 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

In anticipation of a prolonged absence for Tagovailoa, the Dolphins signed Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad Monday to back up Skylar Thompson at quarterback.

After the 26-year-old Tagovailoa suffered the third known concussion of his NFL career — which doesn’t count a concussion at Alabama and another suspected concussion in 2022 — there were calls, including from several former NFL players, for Tagovailoa to consider retiring. NFL Network reported Sunday that Tagovailoa has no plans to retire and had begun meeting with concussion specialists.

As expected, that wasn’t a topic Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel wanted to touch when he addressed reporters Monday.

“I’ll let Tua be the champion of his own career and speak on that,” McDaniel said. It was unclear when Tagovailoa would speak to the media next.

McDaniel also was asked Monday if Tagovailoa was exhibiting symptoms.

“He’s downstairs, smiling with teammates, working with medical staff diligently,” McDaniel said. “He’s doing well today. He’s feeling good. But what does that mean in terms of medical diagnosis? I don’t base my judgments off my interactions with him as much as hearing the end result of the medical examination.”

Tagovailoa suffered the concussion during last Thursday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills. He scrambled for a first down on a fourth-and-4 play in the red zone, but instead of sliding, he collided with Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin, his head making contact with Hamlin’s arm.

Tagovailoa appeared to exhibit a fencing response, but rather than being carted off by ambulance, as he was during a similar sequence in 2022, he was able to leave the field under his own power.

Thompson, the only other quarterback on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster, finished out Thursday’s game. McDaniel said Thompson would be Miami’s starter for Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, with Huntley signed to back him up.

“He’s game has developed since he’s had a starting opportunity in this league. His teammates can feel his development and growth,” McDaniel said of Thompson.

Thompson played in seven games, starting two, in 2022 and did not see the field in 2023. He has thrown for 614 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions on a 57.1 completion percentage in his brief NFL career.

Huntley, 26, has started at least one game in each of the past three seasons for the Ravens, filling in for Lamar Jackson. In 20 career games (nine starts) since 2020, Huntley has amassed 1,957 passing yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 64.6 completion percentage.

Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel discusses Tua Tagovailoa's extension July 28, 2024

Dolphins going ‘day by day’ with Tua; Skylar Thompson to start Week 3

As outside calls for Tua Tagovailoa to reconsider his NFL career grew over the weekend, the Miami Dolphins are taking the injured quarterback’s situation “day by day.”

In practice, that means the Dolphins are holding off on deciding whether Tagovailoa will be placed on injured reserve, as well as signing Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad to back up Skylar Thompson at quarterback.

Addressing reporters Monday, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said there is “not enough information” yet for he and general manager Chris Grier to decide whether Tagovailoa should go on IR, which would require he miss at least four weeks.

After the 26-year-old Tagovailoa suffered the third known concussion of his NFL career — which doesn’t count a concussion at Alabama and another suspected concussion in 2022 — there were calls, including from several former NFL players, for Tagovailoa to consider retiring. Report: Dolphins signing QB Tyler Huntley

The Miami Dolphins are signing quarterback Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad, NFL Network reported Monday.

Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa is in the concussion protocol and Skylar Thompson is preparing to start under center on Sunday at Seattle.

Huntley, 26, was named to the Pro Bowl after the 2022 season. Since joining the Ravens in 2020 as an undrafted free agent, he is 3-6 as a starter and has appeared in 20 games for Baltimore.

Huntley has completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 1,957 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He has rushed for 509 yards and three scores.

Report: Ravens QB Tyler Huntley to sign tender

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley plans to sign his restricted free agent tender on Monday, NFL Network reported Friday.

The tender is worth $2.627 million for the 2023 season and Huntley, 25, will become an unrestricted free agent in 2024.

Huntley has been working out at the team facilities and plans to throw with his teammates this weekend in Tampa, Fla., per the report.

Huntley was selected for the Pro Bowl Games last season after completing 75 of 112 passes for 658 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in four starts (2-2 record) for the Ravens. He rushed for 137 yards and one TD.

Undrafted out of Utah in 2020, Huntley has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 1,754 yards with five TDs and seven picks in 15 career games (eight starts).

The signing of Huntley provides a little insurance for Baltimore as uncertainty continues to swirl around former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson’s future with the Ravens.

Jackson continues to seek a long-term deal and has not signed the non-exclusive franchise tag that would pay him $32 million next season.

Ravens without Lamar Jackson in crucial game at Bengals

Quarterback Lamar Jackson was ruled out for Week 18 by Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh on Friday.

The Ravens (10-6) visit the Cincinnati Bengals (11-4) with a chance to sweep the season series.

“Lamar’s working as hard as he can. The trainers are working as hard as they can,” Harbaugh said. “That’s where we’re at. He won’t be playing in this game, we’re hopeful for next week.”

Backup Tyler Huntley (right throwing shoulder/wrist) was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday but said Friday “I have a good chance,” to be ready to start Sunday. If Huntley can’t go, Anthony Brown would make his first career start.

Harbaugh echoed Huntley’s assessment.

“Really good chance,” he said.

Jackson has been out more than a month. He left the Dec. 4 game against the Denver Broncos with a sprained left knee and missed his 15th consecutive practice on Friday.

Harbaugh said the Ravens must be mindful of playing Sunday’s game with “short-term and long-term considerations” in mind.

If the Ravens win Sunday, the 2-0 record against the Bengals would mean Baltimore has a 4-2 record in the AFC North. The Bengals would be 2-4, but have the same number of total wins.

Cincinnati’s game postponed Monday against Buffalo was officially canceled, leaving the Bengals with one game fewer than Baltimore and the rest of the NFL (except for the Bills).

The Ravens defeated the Bengals, 19-17, in Week 5, but Cincinnati is 9-1 since that game.

The Ravens lost the final six games of the 2021 season without Jackson and have dropped two of their last three.

Ravens to start QB Tyler Huntley again vs. Steelers

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was ruled out for a fourth straight game, leaving Tyler Huntley in line to start again when the Ravens host the Pittsburgh Steelers on “Sunday Night Football.”

Jackson, who turns 26 next weekend on Jan. 7, has yet to practice since spraining the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee when the Ravens beat the Denver Broncos on Dec. 4. The Ravens are 2-1 in Huntley’s past three starts.

Huntley said “it kills” Jackson to not be playing this month, the second straight year he’s missed most of December with an injury.

“He wants to be playing,” Huntley told reporters. “But at the same time, (he’s) just accepting the process and just focusing on getting himself healthy so he can be ready to play when it most matters.”

The Ravens (10-5) have clinched a playoff berth but trail the Cincinnati Bengals by one game in the AFC North, and their Week 18 showdown possibly could determine the division winner. The Steelers (7-8) have an outside chance at making the playoffs, leading to this week’s game between historic AFC North rivals to be flexed into the primetime window.

The league MVP in 2019, Jackson has completed 62.3 percent of his passes this season for 2,242 yards, with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’s the team’s leading rusher, running for 764 yards and three scores.

Ravens expect QB Lamar Jackson to miss ‘days to weeks’

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is out, but his season is not over.

Jackson sprained his left knee in the first quarter Sunday against the Denver Broncos, but Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said the injury is not season-ending.

“It’s a knee, but it’s not a season-ending type of knee (injury),” Harbaugh said. “It’s going to be a number of days to weeks. We’ll see. We’ll see if he can go back this week. If not, it will be sometime after that shortly.”

Harbaugh said he will know more Monday or Wednesday when the results of further testing become available through the medical staff.

On the final play of the first quarter, Jackson took a 6-yard loss when he was sacked by Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper, moving Baltimore back to its own 27-yard line. Jackson then headed for the medical tent and was replaced by Tyler Huntley, who promptly completed an 11-yard pass to Devin Duvernay.

Before the sack, Jackson completed three of four passes for 11 yards and also gained nine yards on his only carry. He entered Sunday with 17 passing touchdowns and three rushing scores while throwing for 2,231 yards and rushing for 755.

The Ravens trailed 3-0 when Jackson exited.

Huntley relieved Jackson as he did for the final four games of the 2021 season, when Jackson was sidelined with an ankle injury.

Against Denver, Huntley completed 27 of 32 passes for 187 yards and had 10 carries for 41 yards, including the game-winning touchdown on a 2-yard run with 28 seconds left.

“We’ll take that win,” Ravens tight end Mark Andrews said. “No matter how it comes.”
