Colts RT Braden Smith, TE Kylen Granson out vs. Browns

The Indianapolis Colts ruled out right tackle Braden Smith and tight end Kylen Granson for Sunday’s home game against the Cleveland Browns, coach Shane Steichen said Friday.

Smith (hip/wrist) did not play last weekend at Jacksonville and did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. Rookie Blake Freeland started in his place against the Jaguars.

Granson entered the league’s concussion protocol following the 37-20 loss to the Jaguars and also missed practice Wednesday and Thursday.

Smith, 27, started the first five games this season. Since the Colts selected him in the second round (37th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Auburn, he has started 75 of his 77 games.

Granson, 25, has 16 receptions for 170 yards and one touchdown in six games (two starts). The Colts picked him in the fourth round of the 2021 draft out of SMU. He has caught 58 passes for 578 yards and one TD in 36 games (six starts) in his career.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) runs against Atlanta Falcons during the second half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.

Lions thinned at RB, confident ‘someone will step up’

Starter David Montgomery missed practice for the Detroit Lions on Thursday, leaving the team hopeful rookie Jahmyr Gibbs can return from a hamstring injury for Sunday’s game at Baltimore.

Gibbs was limited at Thursday’s practice and did not play in the last two games, including what looks like a costly win over the Buccaneers last week.

Craig Reynolds stepped into a bigger role last week after Montgomery left Detroit’s victory with a rib injury. Campbell said earlier this week Montgomery could be out multiple games.

Reynolds rushed for 15 yards on 10 carries at Tampa Bay but was limited Thursday with toe and hamstring injuries. He did not practice Wednesday.

Gibbs is “trending the right direction,” head coach Dan Campbell said. A first-round pick, Gibbs didn’t play in the Lions’ wins over the Carolina Panthers or Buccaneers.

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said the loss of Montgomery is significant for an offense that had identified him as the featured back, but believes the Lions have the depth to hold up.

“He was a bell cow for us,” Johnson said. “But like we’ve had so often already this year in the receiver room and the O-line room, someone will step up and rise to the occasion, there’s no doubt about it.”

The Lions already were without backup running back Zonovan Knight, who was placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum.

Pats’ Matt Judon, Christian Gonzalez might miss extended time

New England Patriots Pro Bowl edge rusher Matt Judon and rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez were injured in Sunday’s 38-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and both could miss extended time.

Gonzalez suffered a dislocated right shoulder and is expected to be out for “some time,” according to reports. Judon was awaiting MRI results as the team fears a biceps injury suffered in the fourth quarter, per NFL Network.

Gonzalez, the first-round pick out of Oregon (17th overall) who was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month in September, hurt his shoulder when making a first-quarter tackle on Cowboys running back Tony Pollard.

The Patriots (1-3) may enter Sunday’s home game against the New Orleans Saints (2-2) very thin at corner, already dealing with ankle injuries to Jonathan Jones and Jack Jones.

Ravens rule out Odell Beckham Jr., Justice Hill, 5 others

The unbeaten Baltimore Ravens ruled out seven players for Sunday’s game against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

On offense, the Ravens will be without wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (ankle), running back Justice Hill (foot), left tackle Ronnie Stanley (knee) and center Tyler Linderbaum (ankle).

The defense will be missing cornerback Marlon Humphrey (foot), safety Marcus Williams (pectoral) and linebacker Odafe Oweh (ankle).

All seven players missed practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Wide receiver Devin Duvernay (shoulder) and linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (illness) were full participants for the second straight day Friday and carry no injury designation for Week 3.

Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco, WR Kadarius Toney miss practice

Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco and wideout Kadarius Toney missed practice Wednesday.

Pacheco is dealing with a hamstring injury and Toney has a sprained toe heading into Week 3 against Chicago.

Pacheco, 24, has 20 carries for 93 yards and five catches for 31 yards through two games this season.

Toney, 24, has six catches for 36 yards in two games. He dropped four passes in the Week 1 loss to Detroit.

Nebraska loses top two RBs for season; undecided on QB1

Nebraska will proceed without running backs Rahmir Johnson and Gabe Ervin after both were lost to season-ending injuries in Saturday’s win over Northern Illinois.

Head coach Matt Rhule also said Monday that cornerback Dwight Bootle II (shoulder) is out for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Without their top two rushers, the Cornhuskers are going back to 2022 leading rusher Anthony Grant, a sixth-year senior.

“It’s his show now. It’s time to go,” Rhule said Monday.

As for who will take the snaps for Nebraska when the Cornhuskers face Louisiana Tech this week, Rhule isn’t ready to say. On Monday, he indicated there would be no decision made on the starting quarterback job until gameday.

Jeff Sims missed the blowout win over Northern Illinois, when Heinrich Haarberg threw two touchdown passes and ran for another.

“We can win with both guys,” Rhule said.

Johnson dislocated his shoulder, with the injury requiring surgery. Ervin will need surgery for a dislocated hip.

Grant also led the Huskers in carries in 2022 with 218, while gaining 915 net yards, but this season the sixth-year running back opened third on the depth chart. Grant now will be backed-up by Emmett Johnson and Kwinten Ives.

After two games as the starting running back, Ervin led Nebraska with 196 yards and had one touchdown.

Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Trenton Bourguet (16) grimaces after an ankle injury that forced him to leave the game against the Fresno State Bulldogs in the first half at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Sept. 16, 2023.

Arizona State battling injuries at quarterback with USC next

Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham might need to pull a quarterback or two out of his hat before the Sun Devils take on nationally ranked Southern California next weekend.

Freshman starter Jaden Rashada didn’t dress in Saturday’s 29-0 home loss to Fresno State and is expected to be out four to six weeks with a lingering unspecifed injury, Dillingham said.

The starter against Fresno State, Trenton Bourguet, departed the game in the first quarter with an apparent left leg injury and resurfaced later with crutches and a walking boot on his left foot. He will have an MRI, Dillingham said.

Then, the backup’s backup, Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne, sustained a “muscular injury” to a leg and had to come out. He was 5-for-13 passing for 52 yards and lost the ball four times — twice on interceptions, twice on fumbles.

The leading passer on the day was Jacob Conover, the only other scholarship quarterback on the roster. The fourth-string sophomore was 6-for-16 passing for 89 yards, and he threw two more interceptions, giving Fresno State five on the day.

Arizona State turned the ball over eight times in all.

“This is football,” junior nickel back Jordan Clark said of the team’s injuries, per 247Sports. “That’s the risk whenever you put your helmet on and then strap your pads up. The mood around the team is just next man up. You got to play football. And if anybody’s mood isn’t that, that’ll get corrected.”

Before Saturday, the Sun Devils hadn’t been shut out in a home game since then-No. 2 USC beat them 50-0 in the 1988 season.

No. 3 Florida State to play without 3 starters at BC

Three starters will be sidelined by injury for No. 3 Florida State when they play at Boston College in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Saturday, ESPN reported.

Missing their second straight game for the Seminoles will be left tackle Robert Scott Jr. and center Maurice Smith. Safety Akeem Dent, who has 32 Florida State starts on his stat sheet, injured his left knee last week against Southern Miss.

Bless Harris is expected to fill in for Scott, with Darius Washington covering for Smith at center. It would be the third career start for both.

Florida State (2-0) and Boston College (1-1) could do battle with wind and rain, the remnants of Hurricane Lee as it moves into New England.

Report: OL prospect Andrew Vorhees tears ACL at Combine

Southern Cal offensive lineman Andrew Vorhees, an All-American in 2022 who’s considered a top-100 NFL draft prospect, tore his ACL during drills at the Scouting Combine, NFL Network reported Monday.

A second OL prospect, Wanya Morris of Oklahoma, sustained a Grade 2 hamstring pull in his 40-yard dash, per NFL Network.

Vorhees suffered his injury Sunday but then came back Monday morning to do 38 reps in the 225-pound bench press with one leg on the ground, per the report. It’s reportedly a clean tear.

The injury occurred during position drills, per the report. Vorhees measured at 6-feet-6 and 310 pounds with 32 1/8 arm length.

Vorhees made 37 starts at USC over his four-year career, with 25 at right guard. The injury will likely erase his entire first season in the NFL.

Morris’ injury is a 3- to 4-week recovery, and it’s expected he’ll be ready for private workouts in April, per the report.

Report: Chargers part with longtime head athletic trainer

The Los Angeles Chargers moved on from head athletic trainer Damon Mitchell, who had worked for the franchise in various capacities since 1999, ESPN reported Thursday.

Mitchell began with the Chargers as an intern 24 years ago. He became the head athletic trainer in 2017 and served in that role for six seasons.

The Chargers went 10-7 in the 2022 regular season and earned a wild-card berth. They led the Jaguars 27-0 late in the first half before Jacksonville rallied for a stunning 31-30 win in the AFC wild-card round.

Los Angeles played without wide receiver Mike Williams in that game after he sustained a back injury playing in Week 18, when the Chargers had nothing to gain.

The Chargers fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi during the offseason, and defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill left the team this week to join the Miami Dolphins and work under their new defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio.

Los Angeles’ Brandon Staley will remain as the team’s head coach for a third season in 2023.
