Texans RB Joe Mixon (ankle) out vs. Vikings

Houston Texans star running back Joe Mixon has been ruled out with an ankle injury for Sunday’s matchup at the Minnesota Vikings.

The team announced Saturday that Mixon did not travel to Minnesota with the team, nor did center Jarrett Patterson, who’s dealing with a calf injury.

In Mixon’s absence, veteran Cam Akers is expected to be the primary rusher with Dare Ogunbowale likely subbing in for passing downs.

Mixon’s backup in Week 1, Dameon Pierce, 24, didn’t practice this week after missing Week 2 and has been ruled out of Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. He had three rushes for 16 yards behind Mixon in the season opener.

Mixon, who didn’t practice all week, said earlier in the week that his injury happened on a now-banned hip-drop tackle in Sunday night’s win over the Chicago Bears. He finished with 25 yards rushing on nine carries and caught three passes for 25 yards.

The 28-year-old Mixon has 184 yards rushing through two games with a touchdown. The 2021 Pro Bowler also has six catches for 44 yards.

Michigan tight end Colston Loveland (18) celebrates his touchdown against Fresno State during the second half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.

Michigan star TE Colston Loveland ruled out with injury vs. USC

Michigan will be without Colston Loveland in Saturday’s home matchup against No. 11 Southern California, as the team’s star tight end was ruled out of the game with an undisclosed injury.

In last weekend’s 28-18 win over Arkansas State, Loveland appeared to suffer a shoulder injury, though Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore hasn’t revealed specifics about the injury.

Loveland’s 19 receptions this season not only leads the team, but no other pass catcher for No. 18 Michigan has more than nine total catches.

The junior standout was a preseason All-American. He has a career total of 80 receptions for 1,071 yards and seven touchdowns in 32 games.

49ers star TE George Kittle (hamstring) misses practice

The San Francisco 49ers are facing another blow to their offense after star tight end George Kittle missed Thursday’s practice with what ESPN and NFL Network reported to be hamstring tightness.

The 49ers may not have Kittle available for Week 3 when they face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

Kittle, a five-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro selection (including twice to the first team), had 11 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown over the Niners’ first two games of 2024.

The 30-year-old has played in 100 games (92 starts) since starting his NFL career with San Francisco as a fifth-round draft pick in 2017, hauling in 471 receptions for 6,390 yards and 38 touchdowns.

The 49ers are already down two explosive weapons on offense: running back Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles), who’s on injured reserve, and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (calf strain), who is expected to miss a couple of weeks.

Cornerback Charvarius Ward (hamstring/knee) also missed practice on Thursday.

Report: Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke (knee) out for year

Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke suffered a right knee injury Saturday that will keep him out for the rest of the season, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Monday.

Van Dyke, a fifth-year senior who transferred from Miami, was hurt on a third-down scramble on the seventh play of the game during the Badgers’ 42-10 loss to visiting Alabama.

After a visit to the medical tent, Van Dyke was carted to the locker room and reappeared during the second half with crutches and a knee brace.

Braedyn Locke played the rest of the game and figures to be the No. 1 quarterback for Wisconsin going forward.

Van Dyke completed 43 of 68 passes for 422 yards and one touchdown while adding a rushing touchdown in parts of three games this season. In four years at Miami, Van Dyke threw for 7,469 yards, 54 touchdowns and 23 interceptions over 32 games.

Bills QB Josh Allen to have X-rays on left hand

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen said his heavily taped left hand is “fine,” but expects to have X-rays to confirm his plans to not miss any time.

Allen passed for 232 yards and accounted for four touchdowns for the Bills in a 34-28 comeback win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. He scored two rushing touchdowns that involved heavy contact and hurt his hand on the second one.

“The first one, I kind of lowered the shoulder knowing it was a corner. The second one, I knew it was (safety) Budda (Baker), and he’ll lower the boom on you,” Allen said. “So I decided to go up and over. Probably can’t make a living doing that.”

Bills head coach Sean McDemott said he would have more information on Allen on Monday after speaking with team medical personnel.

While cradling the ball to protect it from closing Cardinals defensive lineman Justin Jones and Baker, Allen went airborne over Baker to complete a 6-yard touchdown run with 8:44 left in the fourth quarter.

As he cleared the goal line, Allen went to the ground and landed on his left hand under the full force of his own right elbow and body weight.

Athletic trainers on the sideline tended to Allen, who returned the next possession with tape on the hand.

Report: Packers QB Jordan Love to miss ‘a few weeks’

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love only is expected to miss “a few weeks” with a Grade 1/2 MCL sprain, NFL Network reported on Sunday.

The injury could see him return in as little as three weeks, per the report, but has the potential to keep him out for up to six weeks.

Initial tests had indicated that Love didn’t sustain any ACL damage and that his ACL is “intact,” NFL Network reported on Saturday.

Love sustained the injury to his lower left leg and was helped off the field with six seconds left in Friday night’s season-opening 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Love, 25, had just completed a 33-yard pass to Jayden Reed at midfield while trying to rally the Packers. When he dropped back to pass on the next snap, he was hit by Eagles defenders Josh Sweat and Jalen Carter and appeared to twist his leg while falling to the ground.

Backup Malik Willis, acquired in a trade last week with the Tennessee Titans, replaced Love and threw an incompletion before taking a sack on the final play. It’s reportedly still unclear whether Willis or last year’s backup Sean Clifford will start when the Packers play the visiting Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Love, who signed a four-year, $220 million contract on July 26, finished Friday’s game with 260 yards on 17-of-34 passing with two touchdowns and an interception.

Report: Ravens LB Kyle Van Noy breaks orbital bone

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy sustained a fractured orbital bone in Thursday’s season-opening loss at Kansas City, NFL Network reported Friday.

Citing a source with direct knowledge of the injury, the report said the 11-year veteran will undergo more testing to determine how much time he will miss.

Van Noy, 33, also was checked for a concussion during the 27-20 loss to the Chiefs and was cleared, but he did not return to the game.

The injury occurred shortly after halftime when Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared to land on Van Noy’s head after avoiding a sack. Van Noy was able to walk off the field and finished the game with one tackle and one quarterback hit.

Van Noy re-signed with the Ravens on a two-year deal in April after registering a career-high nine sacks in 14 games (three starts) with Baltimore in 2023.

A two-time Super Bowl champion with New England, Van Noy has tallied 42.5 sacks, 501 tackles, 12 forced fumbles and three interceptions in 143 games (90 starts) with the Detroit Lions (2014-16), Patriots (2016-19, 2021), Miami Dolphins (2020), Los Angeles Chargers (2022) and Ravens.

Outside linebackers David Ojabo and Tavius Robinson could be in line for more playing time in Van Noy’s absence. The Ravens host the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2.

Notre Dame wide receiver Jordan Faison addresses media after a Notre Dame football practice at Irish Athletic Center on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, in South Bend.

Notre Dame WR Jordan Faison (ankle) out 1-2 weeks

Notre Dame wide receiver Jordan Faison suffered a sprained right ankle Saturday against Texas A&M and will miss one to two weeks, coach Marcus Freeman said Monday.

Faison made two catches for 12 yards and also took punt returning duties in the No. 7 Fighting Irish’s 23-13 road win over No. 20 Texas A&M.

Faison, who started his Notre Dame athletic career strictly as a lacrosse player, walked on to the football team last fall and began to see playing time at wide receiver. He finished 2023 with 19 catches for 322 yards and four touchdowns in seven games, with touchdown receptions in each of his final three games of the season.

He was the Sun Bowl MVP for hauling in five catches for 115 yards and a score in the Fighting Irish’s 40-8 win over Oregon State.

Notre Dame faces Northern Illinois on Saturday for its home opener before visiting Purdue on Sept. 14.

Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell (58) practices during mini camp at Detroit Lions headquarters and practice facility in Allen Park on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Lions star OT Penei Sewell injures foot in practice

Detroit Lions star offensive tackle Penei Sewell left the team’s final training camp practice early Wednesday with a foot injury.

Multiple reports said Sewell went to the sideline, where trainers removed his sock and shoe to look at the foot. He then went to the locker room under his own power for tests.

The Lions, who have aspirations of the Super Bowl after making the NFC Championship Game last season, can ill afford to lose Sewell.

The 23-year-old has been a standout for the Lions since they selected him with the No. 7 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s never missed a game — starting all 50 games — and Pro Football Focus rates him as the top offensive tackle in the league.

It grades the Lions’ offensive line — also anchored by center Frank Ragnow — as the league’s best.

Sewell was named to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons and to the All-Pro first team in 2023.

The Lions start the regular season on Sept. 8 against the Los Angeles Rams, welcoming their former quarterback, Matthew Stafford, and his team to the city.

RB Jahmyr Gibbs runs a drill during the Detroit Lions training camp at the Lions headquarters in Allen Park, Mich. on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) ‘trending the right way’

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is on track to play in the season opener as his injured hamstring continues to improve, coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday.

Gibbs, 22, hasn’t practiced since Aug. 12.

Campbell said he expects Gibbs to return to practice next week in preparation for the Sept. 8 opener at home against the Los Angeles Rams.

“He’s trending the right way,” Campbell told reporters. “Wish we had more practice with him, but as far as the health of it, he is healing and he’s on schedule to be back and get his legs back under him and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Gibbs made the Pro Bowl as a 2023 rookie with 1,261 yards from scrimmage. The 12th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Alabama, he ran 182 times for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns while catching 52 passes for 316 yards and another score in 15 games (three starts) last year.

The Lions are set to play their final preseason game Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Campbell’s goal will be to avoid the injuries that have plagued his team this summer.

Campbell was optimistic about the other players who have been hampered by injuries on Tuesday.

He said Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta (hamstring) and starting guard Kevin Zeitler (shoulder) are also on the verge of a return, as are offensive tackle Dan Skipper (ankle) and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (arm).

“We’re about to get a whole group of guys back, hopefully Sunday, and then they’ll get next week’s practice before we get ready for the Rams and then we do Rams practice,” Campbell said.
