Tennessee Titans NFL tackle Isaiah Wilson

Reports: NFL suspends free agent OL Isaiah Wilson 3 games

The NFL has suspended free agent Isaiah Wilson for the first three games of the 2023 season for undisclosed reasons, according to multiple reports.

Wilson, a first-round draft pick (No. 29 overall) by the Tennessee Titans in 2020 out of Georgia, has not been part of an NFL team since the New York Giants carried him on their practice squad in 2021. The Giants released the 6-foot-6, 350-pounder in January 2022.

Wilson, 24, has had multiple off-field issues, including being charged with driving under the influence before the start of the 2020 season. He played in one game at offensive tackle for the Titans in 2020. He was traded to the Dolphins on March 17, 2021, and waived three days later.

The Giants assigned him to their practice squad on Sept. 30, 2021.

Report: Giants to sign former first-round OT Isaiah Wilson

The New York Giants plan to sign former first-round pick Isaiah Wilson to the practice squad, the NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Wilson, a 6-foot-6, 350-pound offensive tackle, worked out for the Giants earlier this week. He was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the 29th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Titans traded Wilson to the Dolphins in March as part of a swap of seventh-round draft choices, Miami’s in 2021 for Tennessee’s in 2022.

Wilson, however, was waived by the Dolphins just three days after the trade. The 22-year-old Wilson reportedly missed workouts he had promised to attend and showed up late for his physical and onboarding process with the team.

Wilson’s 2020 season was eventful, but the majority of the action took place almost exclusively off the field. That included two incidents involving law enforcement and two stints on the league’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

On the field, he played only four snaps. The former Georgia Bulldogs blocker lasted only one season under a four-year, $11.6 million contract he signed in August.

Dolphins waive OL Isaiah Wilson days after trade

Just three days after trading for offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, the Miami Dolphins waived the former first-round pick on Saturday.

Wilson, 22, was the 29th overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 NFL Draft, but tweeted last month that he was “done” with the organization. The Titans then traded Wilson to the Dolphins as part of a swap of seventh-round draft choices, Miami’s this year for Tennessee’s in 2022.

But his arrival in Miami was anything but smooth, with Wilson reportedly missing workouts he had promised to attend and showing up late for his physical and onboarding process with the team.

On the field, he played only four snaps. The former Georgia Bulldogs blocker lasted only one season under a four-year, $11.6 million contract he signed in August.

In December, the Titans placed him on their non-football injury list, with general manager Jon Robinson saying Wilson was “going to have to make a determination if he wants to do everything necessary to play pro football.”

In late February, Wilson tweeted that he was “done with football as a Titan… No further comments.” The tweet later was deleted.

Isaiah Wilson, the Tennessee Titans’ first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, tweeted last month that he was “done” with the organization.

The Titans reported granted Wilson his relocation request on Monday. ESPN reported Wilson is being traded to the Miami Dolphins for a pair of seventh-round draft choices, one this year and one in 2022, to acquire the offensive tackle.

Wilson must pass a physical with the Dolphins before the trade can be completed when the league year begins March 17.

Wilson’s 2020 season was eventful, but the majority of the action took place almost exclusively off the field. The included two incidents involving law enforcement and two stints on the league’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

On the field, he played only four snaps. The former Georgia Bulldogs’ blocker was the 29th overall selection, but lasted only one season under a four-year, $11.6 million contract he signed in August.

In December, the Titans placed him on their non-football injury list, with general manager Jon Robinson saying Wilson was “going to have to make a determination if he wants to do everything necessary to play pro football.”

In late February, Wilson tweeted that he was “done with football as a Titan… No further comments.”

Trading Wilson rather than releasing him would lessen the Titans’ dead cap charge, from $5.38 million to $4.48 million, according to OverTheCap.com.

Wilson does have ties to the Dolphins, who were considering drafting him on the second day of the draft, according to the ESPN report. Wilson played high school football in Brooklyn at the same school as Dolphins coach Brian Flores, and he went to Georgia with Miami offensive guard Solomon Kindley.

OT Isaiah Wilson tweets he’s ‘done’ with Titans

Offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson’s brief tenure with the Tennessee Titans might be ending.

The 2020 first-round pick, the 29th overall selection, tweeted Monday, “Im (sic) done with football as a Titan… No further comments.”

The tweet was subsequently deleted.

Wilson’s playing time as a rookie consisted of four plays on Nov. 29 against the Indianapolis Colts, three on offense and one on special teams.

Wilson, 22, ran into trouble last year beginning in training camp. He got a trespass warning from police after he allegedly pondered jumping from a second-story balcony during a party near Tennessee State University on Aug. 15. He subsequently had two stays on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

On Sept. 11, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after his car allegedly hit a concrete wall.

The Titans suspended Wilson for the Dec. 6 game against the Cleveland Browns for an unspecified violation of team rules. For the remainder of the season, Wilson was on the reserve/non-football illness list due to what the team termed personal issues.

Last week, Tennessee general manager Jon Robinson said of Wilson, “He’s going to have to make a determination if he wants to do everything necessary to play pro football, and that’s going to be on him. … We have a certain standard that we want players to prepare and perform at professionally and as people. A lot of work to be done there.”

Should the team release Wilson from the remainder of his four-season, $11.36 million contract, it would face a dead cap charge of $5.38 million, according to Spotrac.com.

Titans suspend first-round rookie OL Wilson

The Tennessee Titans suspended rookie offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson for Sunday’s game for violating club rules one week after the first-round pick made his debut.

Wilson had already been declared out for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. He was added to the injury report and did not practice Thursday or Friday with an illness.

Saturday’s suspension is the culmination of a disappointing season for Wilson, who was arrested for a DUI in September and has had two stints on the reserve/COVID-19 list. One came during training camp and the other in September when he was arrested.

The team took Wilson No. 29 overall out of Georgia in this year’s draft.

The Titans on Saturday also elevated OL Marshall Newhouse and linebacker Tuzar Skipper as a COVID-19 replacement.

Wilson played just three offensive snaps in last week’s win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Titans rookie Wilson arrested on suspicion of DUI

Titans first-round draft pick Isaiah Wilson was arrested Friday night on suspicion of DUI, less than 72 hours before Tennessee’s season opener.

Records on the Davidson County (Tenn.) Sheriff’s Office website indicated he was arrested at 11:29 p.m. According to ESPN, he was released on a $1,000 bond two hours later and is due in court on Oct. 7.

“We are aware of the situation,” the Titans said in a statement. “This is not conduct that is indicative of the character of our football team and we are working through details on how to proceed.”

The Titans are scheduled to open the season Monday night at Denver.

It hasn’t been a quiet transition to the NFL for the 6-foot-6, 350-pound Wilson, a tackle who played 25 games over two seasons at Georgia before the Titans took him with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Wilson, 21, has been on the Reserve/COVID list twice and received a warning for trespassing from Tennessee State University police when he attended an off-campus party last month.

“We’re aware of the situation at TSU during a no-visitors policy and continue to stress the importance of good decision making as we go outside the facility,” head coach Mike Vrabel said at the time, with general manager Jon Robinson adding that the team “handled it internally.”
