RB J.K. Dobbins to visit Chargers

Free-agent running back J.K. Dobbins is scheduled to visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday, his agency confirmed to ESPN.

Dobbins has been cleared for football activities after working his way back from a torn Achilles in Week 1 of last season.

Injuries have defined Dobbins’ NFL career since he was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Ohio State.

After rushing for 805 yards and nine touchdowns in his rookie season, Dobbins missed the entire 2021 campaign with a torn ACL. He played four games in 2022 before requiring arthroscopic knee surgery and was unavailable until Week 14.

All told, Dobbins has played just nine out of a possible 51 regular-season games over the past three seasons. He has rushed for 1,347 yards with 12 touchdowns in 24 career games.

Dobbins, 25, will see a few familiar faces during his visit with the Chargers, however. Fellow running back Gus Edwards signed a two-year, $6.5 million contract with Los Angeles earlier this month, and former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman is now holding the same post with the Chargers.

Running back Austin Ekeler left the Chargers for the Washington Commanders in free agency.

Ekeler tied for the NFL lead in combined rushing and receiving touchdowns in both 2021 (20) and 2022 (18) as the Chargers’ featured back. His production tailed off in 2023, when he rushed 179 times for 628 yards and five touchdowns and caught 51 passes for 436 yards and one touchdown.

Report: Ravens activating RB J.K. Dobbins off PUP list

The Baltimore Ravens are activating top running back J.K. Dobbins off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Monday, ESPN reported.

Dobbins, 24, has officially been on the PUP list since the start of training camp with a hamstring issue. However, the speculation is that Dobbins has been “holding in” — as opposed to not reporting and holding out — because he wants a long-term deal with the club, per multiple media outlets.

Dobbins is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is set to make a base of $1.39 million this season. He’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024.

“The ball is in J.K.’s court,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters last week. “We have talked. We talked again yesterday. We had great conversation. I do expect him back very soon, but I don’t have anything to say about it. It’s up to J.K., so hopefully that will happen soon.”

The Ravens have Justice Hill, Gus Edwards and Melvin Gordon III next in line on the depth chart after Dobbins.

Dobbins has only played in 23 games — missing the entire 2021 season — after sustaining a major knee injury in the final preseason game that year.

He played in just eight games in 2022 after undergoing knee surgery in October to clear out scar tissue that resulted from a prior surgery.

Dobbins has 1,325 career yards rushing, starting nine games in two seasons of action. He has 12 total touchdowns since being selected in the second round of the 2020 draft out of Ohio State.

Report: Ravens to activate RB J.K. Dobbins off IR

The Baltimore Ravens are expected to activate J.K. Dobbins off injured reserve and waive fellow running back Mike Davis, ESPN reported on Saturday.

Dobbins, 23, would be in line to play in Sunday’s game against the host Pittsburgh Steelers. The game would be his first in nearly two months since he underwent knee surgery in October to clear out the scar tissue that resulted from a prior surgery.

As a rookie in 2020, Dobbins carried the ball 134 times for 805 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games. He added 120 receiving yards.

He missed all of 2021 with a knee injury sustained in the final preseason game last year.

Dobbins returned in Week 3 and appeared in four games before going on injured reserve. He has rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 35 touches this season. He added a receiving touchdown.

Davis, 29, has eight carries for 18 yards and two catches for four yards in eight games this season.

Ravens activate Gus Edwards, place J.K. Dobbins on IR

The Baltimore Ravens made changes in their backfield on Saturday, activating Gus Edwards from the physically unable to perform list and placing J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve.

Edwards missed all of last season with a torn ACL but has practiced the past two weeks in preparation for his return. He rushed for 723 yards and six touchdowns on 144 carries in 16 games (six starts) back in 2020.

Dobbins, 23, is set to get arthroscopic knee surgery and is expected to miss four to six weeks, ESPN reported. He had also missed all of 2021 with a knee injury. He has rushed for 123 yards and a TD on 35 touches this season.

Edwards, 27, will join Kenyan Drake, Justice Hill and Mike Davis in the backfield this week when the Ravens (3-3) face the Cleveland Browns (2-4).

Report: Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins (knee) to be inactive vs. Jets

The Baltimore Ravens are being cautious with running back J.K. Dobbins, and he won’t play in Sunday’s season opener against the New York Jets.

Despite Dobbins’ desire to play, the Ravens want to wait a little longer until he plays in his first game since 2020 and will make him inactive, NFL Network reported.

The 23-year-old hasn’t recorded a full practice yet since tearing an ACL in the final preseason game of 2021.

Mike Davis is expected to be the lead running back in the absence of Dobbins, who had been listed as questionable on the injury report.

Report: Torn ACL feared for Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins

The Baltimore Ravens fear running back J.K. Dobbins suffered a season-ending ACL tear during Saturday night’s preseason finale against the Washington Football Team, NFL Network reported.

The second-year back was scheduled to have an MRI on his left knee Sunday to confirm the initial diagnosis.

Dobbins, 22, was carted to the locker room after sustaining the injury on the opening drive. He was sandwiched by multiple defenders after catching a screen pass and his left leg appeared to get bent backward. He wasn’t able to put any pressure on it and needed help to the sideline.

A second-round pick in 2020, Dobbins rushed for 805 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games (one start) as a rookie.

He also caught 18 passes for 120 yards out of the backfield. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry, the second-highest clip by a rookie over the past 20 seasons, per ESPN. The Saints’ Alvin Kamara averaged 6.1 in his rookie season in 2017.

Gus Edwards is Baltimore’s No. 2 running back and would likely become the Week 1 starter if Dobbins is ruled out for the season.
