Report: Packers CB Jaire Alexander not close to being dealt

It’s becoming clear that cornerback Jaire Alexander won’t be on the Green Bay Packers in the 2025 season.

But whether Alexander is traded or released is still in question.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday that Alexander isn’t close to being dealt, although Green Bay nearly traded the seven-year veteran at the start of the league year.

However, there were two problems with the trade. First, the Packers were asking too much in return. Second, Alexander wasn’t willing to take a cut in salary.

Alexander has two years left on the four-year extension he signed in 2022. His base salary for 2025 is $16.15 million, and in 2026 it’s $18.15 million.

If Green Bay cuts or trades Alexander with a post-June 1 designation it would cost more than $7.5 million in dead money but with around $17.1 million in cap savings, according to Over The Cap. A pre-June 1 cut or trade would mean more than $17 million in dead money and roughly $7.6 million in savings.

Alexander was a second-team All-Pro and made the Pro Bowl in both 2020 and 2022 but injuries have forced him to miss most of three of the previous four seasons. He appeared in only four games in 2021 and seven in both 2023 and ‘24.

Alexander has 12 career interceptions with a high of five in 2022. He also has three picks in seven playoff appearances.

Report: Packers open to trading star CB Jaire Alexander

The Green Bay Packers have held trade talks involving star cornerback Jaire Alexander, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

The report comes one day after Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst’s lukewarm response when asked about the team’s plans for Alexander in 2025.

“We’ll see, we’re working through that,” Gutekunst said Tuesday. “We’ll work through that as we go along.”

Alexander, who has two years remaining on his current contract, has been limited to just seven games over each of the last two seasons. He underwent knee surgery after this past campaign.

Alexander, 28, had 16 tackles and two interceptions — one returned for a touchdown — and one forced fumble in seven games in 2024.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Alexander totaled 287 tackles and 12 interceptions in 78 career games (76 starts) since being selected by the Packers with the 18th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Reports: Packers CB Jaire Alexander undergoes knee surgery

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander underwent knee surgery this week to alleviate pain and swelling, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

Alexander, 27, first tore the PCL in his right knee on Oct. 27 and had played just 10 snaps of one game since. He could return for the Super Bowl, should the playoff-bound Packers advance, per an ESPN report. Alexander had the surgery on Tuesday.

The two-time Pro Bowler had 16 tackles, two interceptions and seven passes defensed in seven starts this season.

He has 12 career interceptions in 78 games (76 starts) since being selected No. 18 overall by the Packers in the 2018 draft.

The Packers (11-5) end their regular season at home against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. The Packers need a win and a Washington loss to move up to the No. 6 seed.

CB Jaire Alexander leads cavalry of Packers back at practice

Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander is off the injury report and on the practice field in Green Bay.

Alexander was a full participant in practice on Wednesday.

Alexander last played Nov. 17 and has suited up in only seven of 13 games this season for the Packers (9-4), who visit the Seattle Seahawks (8-5) on Sunday night.

Alexander, 27, missed the past three games with a knee ligament injury. He was hurt Oct. 27 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and returned prematurely coming out of the bye week in a win over the Bears. Aggravating the injury in a cameo at Chicago put Alexander on the shelf for games against the 49ers, Dolphins and last Thursday at Detroit.

Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is first in the NFC in passing yards with 3,474.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, tight end Luke Musgrave and wide receiver Romeo Doubs all practiced in some capacity. Musgrave had left ankle surgery stemming from an injury Week 4. A starter as a rookie last season, Musgrave also required a stint on IR in 2023 because of a lacerated kidney.

Doubs (concussion) was hurt in Week 12 in the Packers’ win over the 49ers. He didn’t play against the Dolphins or Lions and remains in concussion protocol but LaFleur said he was a full participant Wednesday.

Cooper has missed the past three games with a hamstring injury sustained last month in practice days before the Packers beat the 49ers.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (10) celebrates a 16-10 victory agianst the Indianapolis Colts during their football game Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Packers QB Jordan Love active, CB Jaire Alexander out vs. Vikings

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love was active for the first time since injuring his left knee in the season opener and is expected to start Sunday against the visiting Minnesota Vikings.

Love practiced all week and was listed Friday as questionable on the injury report, the same status he had the previous two weeks but was inactive for both games.

Love was 17-for-34 passing for 260 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the season-opening 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 6 in Brazil. He sprained the MCL in the final seconds.

Malik Willis led the Packers (2-1) to consecutive wins while Love was out, completing 73.5 percent of his passes for 324 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Willis is also averaging 9.5 yards per carry, rushing for 114 yards on 12 carries.

Packers starting cornerback Jaire Alexander (quad) was inactive for the first time this season. He had been listed as questionable, while cornerback Carrington Valentine (ankle) was doubtful. Offensive lineman Jordan Morgan already was ruled out.

They are on the inactive list along with safety Kitan Oladapo, offensive tackle Travis Glover and defensive linemen Brenton Cox Jr. and Colby Wooden.

Alexander, 27, started the first three games for the Packers and had 11 tackles and two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

The Vikings (3-0) list of inactive players: quarterback Brett Rypien, linebacker Ivan Pace Jr., wide receiver Trishton Jackson, defensive lineman Levi Drake Rodriguez, offensive tackle Walter Rouse and cornerbacks Fabian Moreau and Dwight McGlothern.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Eric Stokes (21) walks across the field during a joint practice between the Green Bay Packers and the Cincinnati Bengals, Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023, at the practice fields next to Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.

Packers CB Eric Stokes (hamstring) ruled out vs. Vikings

Green Bay Packers cornerback Eric Stokes was added to the injury report and ruled out for Sunday night’s game against the host Minnesota Vikings with a hamstring injury.

In addition to Stokes, the Packers also will be without fellow cornerback Jaire Alexander due to a one-game suspension. Alexander’s ban stems from his coin-toss blunder last week that nearly cost Green Bay a possession, a move that the Packers labeled as “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Stokes, 24, sustained a hamstring injury after recording four snaps on special teams in Green Bay’s 19-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 22. He returned from injured reserve earlier this month and totaled six tackles in two games.

Stokes has 87 tackles and one interception in 28 career games (25 starts) since being selected by the Packers with the 29th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Packers suspend Jaire Alexander 1 game for coin-toss fiasco

The Green Bay Packers suspended cornerback Jaire Alexander for one game on Wednesday for conduct detrimental to the team stemming from his coin-toss blunder last week that nearly cost the club a possession.

Alexander will miss Green Bay’s game against the host Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

“The decision to suspend a player is never easy and not one we take lightly. Unfortunately, Jaire’s actions prior to the game in Carolina led us to take this step,” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said in a Wednesday release. “As an organization, we have an expectation that everyone puts the team first. While we are disappointed, we had a good conversation with Jaire this morning and fully expect him to learn from this as we move forward together. We look forward to welcoming him back next week as he is a valued member of this team and will continue to be in the future.”

The incident occurred at the outset of the Packers’ narrow 33-30 win over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. Alexander, who was not a designated game captain, joined the coin toss at midfield anyway, correctly called tails but didn’t say “defer” when asked by referee Alex Kemp.

“I said, ‘I want our defense to be out there,’ and they all looked at me like I was crazy,” Alexander said afterward. “I’m like, I mean it’s pretty simple what I said, like I want the defense to be out there. They like, ‘You mean defer?’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I guess.’”

Had Kemp not double-checked on Alexander’s intent, the Panthers would have received the first- and second-half kickoffs.

“That was a big mistake,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of Alexander’s call. “That’s something that you review with the guys before they go out there every time about, ‘Hey, we win the toss, we’re going to defer.’ I went to the officials before the game, made sure they knew what we were going to do. We had an incident earlier this year where we had a similar situation, so always trying to be proactive in that approach.”

The Packers, who choose captains week-to-week instead of designating season-long captains, had their three game captains out there and Alexander wasn’t one of them. Neither LaFleur nor Alexander said whether permission was asked or granted to be out there for the coin toss.

“I don’t think Coach knew I was from Charlotte,” Alexander said. “It was, I mean, the guys backed me up. They knew I was from here.”

Alexander is a two-time Pro Bowler but he has been hampered by a shoulder injury this season. He has 26 tackles, four passes defensed and a forced fumble in six games (all starts) this season.

The Packers (7-8) are still in contention for a wild-card berth. Sunday’s game at Minnesota (7-8) is a must-win. The Packers enter the game as the 10th seed in the NFC and the Vikings are No. 8.

Detroit Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes tackles Green Bay Packers running back A.J. Dillon during the first half at Ford Field in Detroit on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023.

Packers RB AJ Dillon, CB Jaire Alexander active vs. Panthers

Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon and cornerback Jaire Alexander are in line to play on Sunday against the host Carolina Panthers.

Dillon missed Green Bay’s 34-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday with a thumb injury. Alexander, in turn, has been sidelined since sustaining a shoulder injury in the Packers’ 20-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 5.

While Dillon and Alexander are active, the Packers (6-8) listed rookie wide receiver Jayden Reed as inactive for Sunday’s game. Reed has been nursing toe and chest injuries.

Also inactive for Green Bay are wide receiver Christian Watson, cornerback Robert Rochell, safety Darnell Savage, linebackers Brenton Cox Jr. and De’Vondre Campbell, and tackle Caleb Jones.

The Panthers (2-12) listed the following players as inactive: cornerback CJ Henderson, offensive linemen Eku Leota and Ricky Lee, wide receivers Mike Strachan and Terrace Marshall Jr., and defensive lineman Chris Wormley.

Report: Packers rework deals, clear $16M in cap space

The Green Bay Packers reportedly cleared more than $16 million salary cap space by reworking two contracts.

They restructured deals for cornerback Jaire Alexander and defensive end Preston Smith, NFL Network said Saturday.

The Packers freed up $9.456 million with Alexander’s contract and another $6.668 million with Smith’s, per the report.

Alexander, 26, made his second Pro Bowl and posted a career-high five interceptions in 16 starts in 2022.
