Commanders release QB Jake Fromm

The Washington Commanders pared down the quarterbacks room on Tuesday, releasing Jake Fromm.

Fromm signed with the Commanders practice squad in October 2022 and spent most of the past two seasons with that group.

Fromm started at Georgia from 2017-19 before the Buffalo Bills selected him in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In college, he threw for 8,224 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions but hasn’t seen the same success in the NFL.

The New York Giants signed him off the practice squad in 2021, and he appeared in three games that season, starting two. Fromm, 25, was 0-2 as a starter and completed 27 of 60 passes (45 percent) for 210 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in his only NFL action.

Washington traded starting quarterback Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks in March, getting draft picks in return. The Commanders selected Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels of LSU with the No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft.

They also have veteran quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel and undrafted free agent rookie Sam Hartman on the roster.

Reports: Giants working out Jake Fromm, A.J. McCarron

The New York Giants are working out free agent quarterbacks Tuesday, including Jake Fromm and A.J. McCarron, according to ESPN and NFL Network.

The workouts come amid problems at QB, where Daniel Jones is nursing an injured ankle and his backup, Tyrod Taylor, is in the concussion protocol. Both were hurt in last week’s win over the Chicago Bears, with Saquon Barkley running the wildcat formation at quarterback to end the game.

Jones bent his leg awkwardly on a sack in the third quarter and was replaced by Taylor, who fumbled on his second possession and then left the game after taking a shot to the head.

Davis Webb (practice squad) is the only other QB on the roster and would get the start in Week 5 if Jones and Taylor are unable to go. The Giants play the Green Bay Packers in London on Sunday. Webb has never thrown a pass in the NFL.

“Davis has been in our offense for quite some time,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said Monday. “He knows the ins and outs of it, so if he has to play, we’ll do everything we can, and I know he will, to be ready to play. In terms of where we’re at at that point, I don’t think we’re at that point just yet to make a decision. We’ll let this thing play out.”

Fromm started two games for the Giants in 2021, including the infamous QB sneaks from the goal line in Week 18 vs. Washington that led to the firing of then-head coach Joe Judge two days later. Fromm went 0-2 as a starter.

McCarron has appeared in 17 NFL games (four starts) for three different teams. McCarron was battling for a roster spot with the Atlanta Falcons over the summer of 2021 before he tore his ACL.

Jones sprained his ankle in the third quarter against the Bears. He passed for just 71 yards but rushed for 68 and two touchdowns before the injury. He’s considered day-to-day.

Jones has 193 yards rushing on the season. He’s thrown for 631 yards and three TDs against two interceptions.

Reports: Giants QB Daniel Jones (neck) likely out vs. Dolphins

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones sustained a neck strain during New York’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week and is likely to miss the Sunday game against the Miami Dolphins, NFL Network and The Athletic reported Tuesday.

Jones reportedly got hurt on the second play last Sunday, but he remained in the game and helped the Giants eke out a 13-7 victory.

Jones threw for 202 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-30 passing for the Giants (4-7). On the year, he has completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 2,428 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions over 11 games.

If Jones can’t go on Sunday, backup Mike Glennon is in line to start.

New York also signed quarterback Jake Fromm off the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad on Tuesday. Fromm was a fifth-round selection by the Bills in the 2020 NFL Draft and has yet to see NFL action.

Reports: Bills isolate Fromm in case of COVID-19 emergency

Bills rookie quarterback Jake Fromm didn’t practice with his teammates on Wednesday — by the design of Buffalo coaches, multiple outlets reported.

Both The Athletic and The Buffalo News said the Bills are “periodically” keeping Fromm away from his teammates to reduce his risk of exposure to COVID-19. They want Fromm, a fifth-round pick from Georgia in April’s NFL draft, ready to step in should either starter Josh Allen or veteran backup Matt Barkley test positive for the virus.

Coach Sean McDermott told reporters earlier this week that there weren’t plans to keep a quarterback in quarantine.

“We’ll be managing that the best we can and trying to remain smart,” he said.

Fromm, 22, played three seasons at Georgia. He stands fourth all-time for the Bulldogs with 8,224 career passing yards and second all-time with 78 touchdown passes.

As a freshman, he led the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoff championship game against Alabama following the 2017 season. He led the Bulldogs to a 13-0 halftime lead, but another freshman quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, led the Crimson Tide to a 26-23 win in overtime.
