Reports: Ex-49ers K Jake Moody joins Bears’ practice squad

Kicker Jake Moody signed with the Chicago Bears’ practice squad Friday after he was waived this week by the San Francisco 49ers, multiple outlets reported.

Moody missed a pair of field goals in the 49ers’ season opening 17-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco signed kicker Eddy Pineiro on Wednesday.

Moody will provide insurance for the Bears behind veteran kicker Cairo Santos.

Moody, 25, kicked for the 49ers in each of the previous two seasons after he was a third-round draft pick out of Michigan in 2023. In 32 career NFL games he has made 46 of 62 field goals and 94 of 96 extra points.

Report: 49ers waiving K Jake Moody after rough opener

The San Francisco 49ers are waiving kicker Jake Moody after missing two field goals in the season opener, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Moody, a third-round draft pick in 2023, missed a 27-yard attempt in the second quarter and had a 36-yarder blocked in the third of Sunday’s 17-13 win at Seattle.

Moody did convert a game-tying field goal from 32 yards in the fourth quarter and also made both of his extra-point attempts.

In 32 career games, Moody has made 74.2 percent of his field goals (46 of 62) and 97.9 percent of his PATs (94 of 96).

Moody set a Super Bowl record with a 55-yarder against Kansas City in Super Bowl LVIII, only to see Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker break the mark with a 57-yarder later in the game.

San Francisco does not currently have another kicker on the active roster or practice squad. Greg Joseph spent time with the team during training camp.

The 49ers (1-0) visit the New Orleans Saints (0-1) on Sunday.

49ers sign K Matthew Wright with Jake Moody (ankle) out

The San Francisco 49ers, who play the host Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night, signed kicker Matthew Wright to a one-year contract on Tuesday.

Starting kicker Jake Moody sustained a high ankle sprain in the second quarter of the 49ers’ 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and will not be available. Moody was trying to tackle Cardinals returner DeeJay Dallas on a kickoff and was knocked backward, with his body folding over his right (kicking) leg.

Wright, 28, has played in 24 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2020, 2022), Jacksonville Jaguars (2021), Kansas City Chiefs (2022) and Carolina Panthers (2023). He has made 40 of 47 field-goal attempts, with a long kick of 59 yards, and 35 of 37 extra-point attempts. Wright has 23 touchbacks in 83 kickoffs.

He was on the 49ers’ practice squad from Sept. 4-9, 2023, and was released by the Steelers at the end of the 2024 preseason.

The 49ers also worked out kickers Randy Bullock, Riley Patterson, Anders Carlson and Matt Coghlin, according to ESPN.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said that safety Talanoa Hufanga (wrist) is expected to miss about a month because of torn wrist ligaments. Hufanga, 25, has played in two games this season, both starts, and has eight tackles.

49ers K Jake Moody sets record for longest Super Bowl field goal

San Francisco 49ers rookie kicker Jake Moody set a Super Bowl record with a 55-yard field goal for the first points of Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Las Vegas.

The kick 12 seconds into the second quarter easily carried through the uprights to break the old mark held by Steve Christie of the Buffalo Bills. Christie made a 54-yarder against the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVIII on Jan. 30, 1994.

Moody, out of Michigan, kicked a 57-yard field goal during the regular season. The 49ers selected him in the third round of the draft.

49ers K Jake Moody (quad) out for preseason finale

Rookie kicker Jake Moody reportedly will miss the San Francisco 49ers’ preseason finale with a quad strain.

Zane Gonzalez will handle the kicking duties against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers on Friday night.

The 49ers selected Moody in the third round in April, parting ways with Robbie Gould after six seasons.

Moody, 23, has missed two field goals and one extra point during the preseason.

He made 82.1 percent of his field-goal attempts (69 of 84) at Michigan from 2018-22, including 29 of 35 in 2022.

Gould, 40, still hopes to latch on with another team for a 19th NFL season. He entered free agency in March.

“I would’ve loved to have gone back there (San Francisco),” Gould said at the American Century Championship last month, per NBC Sports. “I told them I wanted to go back there. We never got an offer from the team. We never had a conversation about coming back.”

Gonzalez, 28, previously played with the Cleveland Browns (2017-18), Arizona Cardinals (2018-20) and Carolina Panthers (2021).
